Beauty Break: Women's March

can we please have a duet?!?

A shout out to all the brave souls that marched today... er yesterday now. Before we return to movie loving with more awardage in the morning, let's look at fun movie-themed signs (including Grease, Star Wars, and even less expected choices like Dazed and Confused and  Carol!) and lots of celebrities marching with civilians.

Women's rights are human rights. Inspiring people and funny signs after the jump...

Huh, looks like there's a BURLESQUE sequel and they're staging it outdoors.

(My favorite is the baby girl chewing the corner of the "Females Are Strong As Hell" sign.)

Am i dreaming or is tt Madonna cozing up to Cher?!!!

This is like a gay fan's fantasy come tru!!! 😂

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

My only fear is that none of this will translate to mobilization or electoral results next year. Protests are romantic and cathartic and passionate. Political organizing and voting isn't.

I remember the A.N.S.W.E.R. demonstrations, the millions of people who turned out to show their opposition to the Iraq War and the erosion of our civil liberties in the name of "fighting terrorism." Then George W. Bush got elected to a second term.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRobert Hamer

The Madonna and Cher picture warms my heart.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMarek

What an expression of quiet peaceful force yesterday was. No wonder President Bonkers had a meltdown over 'crowd size'.
I marched in Vancouver, but my favourite picture was a tweet from the wonderful Margaret Atwood in Toronto. The writer of "The Handmaid's Tale" was wearing a pink hat.
Her sign read "Keep your tiny hands off my human rights".

I'm more optimistic about this outpouring translating to political action. Clearly these organizers know what they're doing.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

Robert Hamer, I feel the same. This should be the beginning of something, not the end, but the next step is the hardest one.

Still a great day nonetheless.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterlylee

Yes to all of this, especially CAROL lol
No one fucks with Meryl. Period.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Robert Hamer and lylee: Agreed. I don't usually join protests/demonstrations, because I fear that they are seen as an end in themselves and that they often don't bring about real change. But I was on the march in London yesterday, because it helped me think that it can be a catalyst for change - not an end in itself, but the start of something, as lylee says.

And yes, Cher + Madonna gets me smiling outside and in!

Why are we in the UK marching.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordon

God damn right. I am becoming angrier with each sound bite this orange troll spits out. It is time for action. And NO, NICOLE, , we are NOT going to stand behind a Nazi Fascist Regime.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

I think we should be careful using words like Nazi.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMARKGORDONUK

Yesterday was inspiring. Protests happened in every single continent and across America. It was a global protest for women's rights and against fascists regimes including the one T***p's is trying to normalize here. RESIST! PUNCH ALL THE NAZIS!

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

I wasn't a bit inspired, the riots shown on UK t.v. showed the USA in a bad light.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordon

markgordon: I can't speak for anyone else in the UK, but I feel that it's valid for people in the UK to protest because Trump's attitudes to women cross borders and so the protests cross borders in return. Protest, though, should not mean riot.

As for using terms like Nazi, yes, we should be careful using it but we should also learn from history. Hitler was an anti-establishment figure voted into power during an economic crisis by a people who were desperate for strong leadership and who realised only too late what their new leader's plans really meant. Hopefully Trump will turn out to be nothing like that. But a lot of people are understandably worried about what he will do.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterEdward L.

I didn't like Trump using Nazi either but those people wrecking their homeland in a violent fashion shows them to be disruptive in the worst way,Trump is winningthe media argument, who belives what'sin the news anyway,Hollywoods priveleged don't inspire me either cos they can go back to their gilded cages when ordinairy Americans are really struggling,it's obvious that some people weren't happy with Hilary and her elite crew and so voted for Trump.

Ashley Judd is my early frontrunner for Best Actress of 2017.

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

markgordon-
not sure what TV station you were watching (is there a UK equivalent of Fox News?) but I was at the Boston march, and friends and family were in NY, DC, San Diego, and Chicago. No riots, no arrests, just making voices heard and lots of big ol' pink hugs. I even gave the peace sign to the Boston Police Commissioner who was standing along the route.

My fav tv/movie related signs were the dozens picturing Leslie Knope!!! "If I had to have a stripper's name, it would be Equality."

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Paul Outlaw, Judd's poem was aired on C-Span. Can we get an Emmy nomination?

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

I'll take it!

January 22, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

I think these demonstrations will go down as being quite effective. Remember the idiotic tea party marches? They helped take the focus off the self-destruction of finance capitalism and onto their stupid issues -- "makers vs. takers," etc. The stupid corporate media always just covers whatever just happened.

These marches will help portray DT as hated and illegitimate. It'll get under his skin and he'll lash out, which will drive his popularity down further. And once his popularity is beneath 35% or so, it'll be impossible for him to get much through Congress -- because they don't want to get dragged down with him. The next congressional elections are in 2018!

Katey & Charlie :)

January 23, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterEz

Mark Gordon - Trump is absolutely losing the "media argument" in the U.S., where is approval rating is at 34% now. He's the least popular president ever at this point in his term, and the Women's March was the largest organized protest of all-time.
