Golden Horse Winners 2017

by Nathaniel R

The 54th Annual Golden Horse Awards were held today in Taipei. That's the Taiwanese Oscars if you will. Though a female-led comedy called The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful took the top prizes, the film with the most wins was The Great Buddha+ which took home five. A romantic comedy called See You Tomorrow (the all-star cast includes TFE favorites Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, and Angelababy) took home most of the 'eye candy' prizes. The family tragedy Old Beast, about a father in court and at war with his kids, also did well.

Curiously Taiwan's Oscar submission Small Talk was eligible last year at this ceremony but wasn't a major player. You can see the whole 2017 ceremony online here but it's not subtitled so good luck! Toward the end of the ceremony Jessica Chastain even shows up to help Ang Lee present Best Actress (which went to Kara Wai) so we've included gifs of that and the list of winners after the jump...

So cool to see post on the Golden Horse here; I'm from Taiwan!

I'd say the Golden Horse Award is Oscar for Chinese-speaking films, since countries like China, Hong Kong, Malaysia can submit as well. It's the most prestigious movie award among Chinese-speaking countries.

Small Talk was eligible last year. (Nominated for best documentary but didn't win)

And in last year's ceremony Juliette Binoche was presenting the best director along with Hou Hsiao-hsien;)

The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful is not a comedy - apparently it's being compared to The Handmaiden ;)

God, I would give it all up to be in between Tony and Takeshi.

Kara Wai is an amazing actress, and so proud she’s from my home country Hong Kong! She was last year best actress in the Hong Kong Academy Awards for “Happiness” and she was recently nominated best actress for an Asian tv award for a very touching short. She has been through so much and it really registered in her acting (and it’s a really up and down life). Cannot wait to see this prize winning film!

Sylvia Zhang is phenomenal. I've watched many of her movies and like Meryl or Huppert, she never fails to give a bad performance even if the material doesn't warrant her talent. Not to mention she is equally adept at directing. An Asian treasure in the league of Maggie Cheung and an early Gong Li.

Hi, I'm from Taiwan! Glad to see you post Golden Horse Award news on here. But I would like to remind you that Small Talk was already nominated for best documentary and best Film Editing last year. Thanks!

Ang Lee's son was nominated for Best Supporting Actor..at one point, the host was asking him what's his thought about his son's nomination and he was like he hoped someone else would win it as he's still young and need more experience/exposure/training...
