Five Lingering Questions About the Globe Nominations. Do share your answers!
By Nathaniel R (and guests)
Okay last Globe conversation frenzy for a bit with SAG nominations happening tomorrow. We'll save a few truly silly questions about the Globes until the Golden Globe week hits but for now the rest of our informal polling of friends and TFE contributors now that you've read the Big Sick / All the Money / Snubs responses (you read that, right?). Join the conversation in the comments won't you?
Five questions and special guests answering them after the jump starting with this one. What's the "surprise" you don't think is surprising at all?
Dancin Dan: Aaron Sorkin for Best Screenplay. Every single one of his screenplays has been nominated for a Globe (except for his first, Malice), and The West Wing was a perennial Best Drama Series nominee. The HFPA loves him, and Molly's Game is a crowdpleaser.
Glenn Dunks: The best director category. Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, Dee Rees, Luca Guadagnino, Sean Baker were always going to be names that had to fight harder than the rest for nominations and these nominations just confirmed that. Never underestimate the ability of awards organisations to nominate a line-up of five white straight men even when presented with a bounty of other options.
Ilich Mejia: Angelina Jolie's film getting in over France's Beats per Minute. If she could sneak The Tourist into consideration, imagine what she can do when she's attached to a project that's actually redeemable.
Jorge Molina: The Greatest Showman love. I think because the word "Musical" is on one of the categories, they always feel compelled to nominate anything that resembles one (they nominated Burlesque, Mamma Mia! and even Sing Street last year).
Katey Rich: The Lady Bird snub in Director. The Globes like big, glitzy things, not small and earnest!
Guy Lodge: Christopher Plummer's nomination — come on, their voters decided to do this before they even saw the movie (if they even did?)
Nick Davis: "Golden Globe nominee Mariah Carey," because it was historically and artistically inevitable, and as perfectly in sync with her brand as with theirs
What's the Best Song nominee we're most likely to catch you singing along to?
Nick Davis: As if this is even a question. "What color is the sky?" Blue. Well, kind of. "Which song are you mo--" MARIAH'S!
Katey Rich: ""The Star" because my son is obsessed with the BFCA mailer we got for it that auto-plays the song when you open it like a Hallmark card.
Jazz Tangcay: "This is Me" - I already know the lyrics and I'm overplaying it on Spotify!
Ilich Mejia: Hear me belting Coco's "Remember Me" from another room because I don't want people seeing how badly my eyes swell as I cry hysterically.
Chris Feil: The Coco soundtrack has umpteen versions of "Remember Me" and I adore each one. FYC Carlos Rivera's "Recuérdame" as the definitive version
Seán McGovern: I'll tell you what I'm not humming, Prayers For This World which I thought would be a shoo(p)-in for Cher. The Globes love Cher and it was written by Diane Warren! Maximum two divas per category and Mary and Mariah got those slots.
Movie you're annoyed you'll have to see now because you're a completist?
Jazz Tangcay: All The Money in the World
Salim Garami:Molly's Game. I think I'm Sorkin-ed out for a while.
Lynn Lee: Do I really have to see Victoria & Abdul? It falls in the category of "movies your mom probably wants to see but you don't."
Nick Davis: Downsizing, which I probably would have seen anyway, but this still feels like a cheap trick. They kind of spotted me one on Stronger, but when Miranda Richardson goes Full Boozehound, you show up at the goddamn Redbox.
Kim Rogers: I tend to be a completist ONLY when it comes the Oscars. Thank God.
Jorge Molina: I still have to see so many movies that I actually want to see before I can complain about seeing the ones I don't want to. Lady Bird, I,Tonya, The Shape of Water, Three Billboards, The Disaster Artist, Battle of the Sexes, and The Post have not been released in Mexico yet.
What's the nomination you found most baffling?
Jorge Molina: I refuse to believe The Leisure Seeker is a real movie that exists and was made and is now Golden-Globe nominated.
Ben Miller: 13 Reasons Why Not to Nominate Anyone Involved in This Weird Show's Depiction of Suicide.
Dancin Dan: Martin McDonagh in Best Director for Three Billboards... If there's a place to reward him for that film, surely it's the juicy (if slightly problematic) writing, and not the rather flavorless direction?
Nomination that most thrilled you?
Ilich Mejia: "A Fantastic Woman" reflects relevant issues with great humanity and, like all great films in the Foreign Language Film category do, alleviate American myopia reminding us that people all over the world struggle with finding themselves in a society that rejects their way of life.
Guy Lodge: Jonny Greenwood's vastly deserved nomination for Phantom Thread, which I'd hoped would do better this morning.
Glenn Dunks: Hong Chau. I haven’t seen Downsizing, but it is a delight to see an Asian performer – and one who isn’t well known, either – sneak in ahead of much buzzier, more heavily-awarded names. That entire supporting line-up is in fact a tantalising glimpse at some quasi-Utopian industry future of equality.
Katey Rich: The love for GLOW, such a delightful Netflix series.
Kim Rogers: David Harbour for Stranger Things!!!
Seán McGovern: Seeing Saoirse Ronan get nominated for anything makes my heart sing. Everything about her as an actor and a person is disarming. Even though Greta Gerwig was shut out, you know that Saoirse has her director's back all the way. I want to be her friend.
YOUR TURN DEAR READER. How would you answer these five questions?
Reader Comments (23)
I called Helen Mirren - the Globes LOVE her (and I would expect her to show up again if the SAGs did genred awards tomorrow).
Re Glenn's answer for best director - I'm actually really disappointed in them this year after their stellar 2014 lineup that was Fincher, Duvernay, Inarritu, Anderson and Linklater AND nominating Todd Haynes last year - their line-ups have been preferable to Oscar's these last few years so I'm gutted to see them slip back and think that your call there is a bit of a (slightly unfair) generalisation - even if it is hugely disappointing to see their line-up this year.
Surprising nomination that isn't surprising at all? Helen for the Leisure Seeker - no way they weren't going to have her not show up/All the Money in the World - this was a shoo-in from the minute Ridley kicked Spacey's sad ass to the curb.
I'm annoyed I have to see Molly's Game as I also can't stomach Aaron Sorkin and Jessica Chastain grates on my last nerve.
Most Baffling? Erick McCormack being nominated over Megan/Sean/Debra (in that order) bless the show - but he's the least worthy of a nomination of the four of them!
Thrilled that...? The I, Tonya love - just to annoy Nat - no, the entire best supporting actress line-up might be my favourite thing this year and Hong Chau is the cherry on the top - more Asian representation please!
The movie I don't want to see, but will, is The Disaster Artist... I don not care for the star...
Hope I will be pleasantly surprised.
Nick is too funny.
Luca Guadagnino is a treasure. His collegial method and his artistry are something special. Of his last three films, two (I Am Love, CMBYN) are, in my book, instant classics. and the third was also superb. Didn’t he publicly come out, at least in English-language media, recently as well? Is it a coincidence that his buzz seems to have fallen off a cliff?
Thanks, Glenn, for your thoughtful comments anout Director and Hong Chau.
1. I definitely saw Aaron Sorkin coming. Even if the film wouldn't make it in, I was certain he would.
2. Probably "Remember Me."
3. I don't have a burning desire to see Victoria & Abdul. I don't really care for white savior movies.
4. Oh, Helen Mirren. I'm sorry. Your seat was supposed to be reserved for either Aubrey Plaza or Regina Hall.
5. I was very excited to see Daniel Kaluuya make it in for Get Out.
Dancin Dan: Martin McDonagh in Best Director for Three Billboards... If there's a place to reward him for that film, surely it's the juicy (if slightly problematic) writing, and not the rather flavorless direction?
Word!
Enough with McDonut!!
Damn, Jessica is fierce in the MG trailer. Brava!
I'm still not over that Jessica Biel is in a category where her competition is Oscar Best Actress winners, and she could very well win. What?
What's the "surprise" you don't think is surprising at all?
Denzel Washington. He's a huge celebrity. It's the Globes.
Movie you're annoyed you'll have to see now because you're a completist?
If I were a completist which, thankfully (like Katie) I am not, see the answer above.
What's the nomination you found most baffling?
Ridley Scott. They didn't like the movie enough to put it in Best Drama, yet they liked his direction better than Guadagnino's?
Nomination that most thrilled you?
A Fantastic Woman. Gotta say, I didn't even like the movie that much, but this is Chile's third straight Globe nomination, which is amazing for a country of 18 million people whose film industry was virtually unknown a decade ago. Aside from the big names like France, Italy, and Germany, there's basically no other country.
^no other country whose national cinema is as acclaimed right now.
Why are people saying Gerwig was shut-out? SHE WAS NOT. She was nominated for Best Screenplay.
Aaron-Shut out of Best Director.
1. "The Greatest Showman", they always feel the need to nominate a musical. Happy it was not "Beauty and the Beast".
2. Remember Me, the version with Natalia Lafourcade because of course.
3. "The Leisure Seeker", what is that?
4. Helen Mirren, even she didn't see this one didn't see that coming.
5. "Call Me By Your Name" and "A Fantastic Woman", you can never take for granted when LGBTQ pictures are loved and recognized.
Jessica Chanstain, Helen Mirren, Judi Dench and Michelle Williams. :( No, mo,no and no!!!’ :(
Julia Roberts not nominated was a shocker. Well received, well liked movie where she is MVP. Common now.
Cant wait for Mariah to be an Oscar winner.
I am not a Best Animated Feature completist, but even if I was, I would still absolutely refuse to watch "The Boss Baby".
The fact that I did not know a movie called "The Leisure Seeker" even existed is baffling.
To be fair, Glenn, our ‘Geek from Guadalajara’ DID find his way into the Best Director lineup, though I’d much prefer Peele or Gerwig or Luca than, say, McDonagh’s (which is currently my favorite of the year, but not the most boldly directed - more than serviceable, but not exceptional).
Lynn - La Dench is absolutely divine in VICTORIA & ABDUL!
Surely Angelina's film deserves the nomination much more than In the Fade, which really did not get great reviews. Angelina's was at least well received.
Guestguestguest - Boss Baby is actually lovely. It took me by surprise how much I enjoyed it.
"Nomination that most thrilled me", So so and because she happens to be Asian and unknown, even though I HAVE NOT SEEN THE PERFORMANCE AND IT COULD BE UTTER AND COMPLETE HORSE CRAP.
And then someone merrily rolls along to say that is THOUGHTFUL comment?
I was laughing so hard I had to take five before I could type.
I am being censored! Or rather, in the words of Juliette Lewis, I WAS RAILROAD! I demand to speak to Nathaniel's manager.
My answer to "Nomination that most delighted you" was Denzel's. People should really rethink their weird aversion to seeing this movie or trusting that he's good in it.
My answer to "Nomination that most baffles you" was Octavia Spencer. I just don't see that she's bringing much that isn't already written into the rather simplistically conceived role.
