Tweetweek: Sequel Culture, Current Kidmania, Moonlight Kiss

Preach. Sequels used to happen because of love for a standalone. Now they're built into it like everything is a prologue.

Lots more after the jump including Twitter's current Kidman obsession, Disney villains, Tab Hunter, and more...

A WEEK OF ONLINE KIDMANIA

Fuck out my way when you see me | I'm rollin' with the LGBT  🎵

Starting with a reminder from Moonlight's Jharrel Jerome that you can vote on those MTV Movie Awards

POST SCRIPT

I think I've mentioned this before but I continue to be blown away by Naomi Watts on social media. Why is she so totally fun on social media but so humorless onscreen? Bring some of that sass and funny personality to your performances, please!

to be honest, every single MCU film is a stand alone film with just minor elements that help build the bigger story. You can watch each one in different order and separately and understand them.

DC, on the other hand... horrible, so far.

I could watch a reboot of THE ADDAMS FAMILY with Oscar Isaac and Eva Green, but she needs to break up with Tim Burton first. If Burton gets involved, there's no way Marsai Martin will ever be cast as Wednesday.

I CAN'T EVEN WITH THE SEXUAL TENSION BETWEEN OSCAR AND EVA IF THEY GOT CAST AS GOMEZ AND MORTICIA oh my i need that now hollywood

SOtrue of Watts talk about a floundering career,Connelly,Hudson,Gyllenhaal,Johansson and a few others seem to be in the same boat.

People always say that about Netflix but I regularly see a lot of good titles on there, like in the "critically acclaimed" category.

Re -releasing Kidman in Queen of the Desert does not do much to further her career. Should have been kept underwraps.

Stodgy and boring.

Waiting for Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts to do a comedy together.....

April 9, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

Naomi was kinda fun in St. Vincent, no?

Releasing Queen Of The Desert seems to neither particularly hurt or help her career. But I'd argue this was the perfect time to ever give it a release as far as Kidman's personal reviews go. In the wave of post Big Little Lies KIdman good will, Kidman is getting some pretty kind reviews for her performance (including a semi-rave from the New York TImes). Most of the blame for the film being not so great is going on Herzog's direction and choices.

Kidman is coming out of Queen Of The Desert mostly unscathed with critics. Might not have happened if it had gotten a US release in 2015 as originally planned, and she wasn't quite as beloved as she seems to be now. Kidman's once again got solid reviews for another performance (despite the movie itself being panned), and now people can look forward to the brand new projects they were really anticapating in 2017 (Top Of The Lake, The Beguiled, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer and How To Talk To Girls At Parties).

2017 seems to be very much on track to be the year of Kidman. Her personal reviews for Queen Of The Desert are good enough that it doesn't derail momentum.

Money talks for Hollywood... and if pics do not make money ( good reviews or bad ) the people in them will fade away.. Hopefully, for you Kidman fans, her newest films will be redeeming.

The Beguiled will be a hard sell.

Kidman has had a lot of financial flops in a 30 year career, and she's still considered A-list (mainly based on her talent and celebrity profile). She's still in incredible demand. Queen Of The Desert was an old, shelved movie given a token release, so they could try and make a few bucks on a simultaneous VOD release. It doesn't really affect Kidman's current fortunes either way.

Lion is Kidman's most succesful box office film in awhile. It's made over 130 million worldwide, and while Kidman is in a supporting role, she's easily the biggest name in it, and has been the focus of much of the publicity. As a bankable film actress, it's a pretty big win for her.

Combine that that with Big Little Lies being an international critical and ratings hit, and you'd have to say Kidman's raw starpower is in the ascendency. Most of her upcoming films seems pretty "arthouse" in nature, so I don't think they need to make big money. If she gets a Big Little Lies-esque critical reaction for even one of her upcoming projects, her stock continues to rise.

Look at Cate Blanchett. Her last 4 films have barely made any money at all. Carol, Truth, Knight Of Cups, Song To Song. But the great reviews for Carol as a whole, and for her performance in Truth have kept her stock elevated.

For elite actresses like Kidman and Blanchett, performance reviews and awards attention probably matter more for continued opportunities these days than box office.

I can, unfortunately, see how many, if not most, of the Disney animated villains seem to evoke gay stereotypes, but how is 'Gaston' part of the 'gay agenda'?

He strikes me as the ultimate animated embodiment of toxic hetero-masculinity.

@K

Thanks. Don't think anything I said is particularly off-base, overly-Stannish or inaccurate though. Kidman has survived box office flops all her career. She's mostly immune to that at this point, as she keeps getting hired.

The real story for her is consolidating this "best actress of her generation" talk that has re-emerged in the mainstream for like the first time since 2004. An Emmy nomination/win, some hardware from SAG and Golden Globes for Big Little Lies may open the floodgates. And the possibility of a consecutive Oscar nod for one of her films will probably have all her rival a little bit shook.

That Oprah tweet is everything. Love it so much.

The sandwich board is hilariously evil.
