Can You Ever Link Me?

In Contention Alfonso Cuarón could tie Walt Disney's record this year for most nominations for a single person in one year (six). And he could break the record for most nominations for a single person from a single film (four)
/Film Katherine Langford (Love Simon, 13 Reasons Why) added to the cast of Infinity War's sequel
Variety Extremely sad to report that Filmstruck is shutting down next week. It had become the go to streaming place for cinephiles once Netflix started having such crappy movie selections
Next Best Picture if you're not sick of hearing me rave about Can You Ever Forgive Me? yet, I'm the guest on this podcast doing that again.

TFE in case you missed it, our podcast on the same movie
The Daily Beast hateful conservatives now targeting Netflix's brilliant Big Mouth series which is all the more reason why all of you should watch it. It's awesome.
/Film this is kind of non-news given the caginess of the statements but TriStar is still hoping to mount a Labyrinth sequel with Jennifer Connelly reprising her role 30+ years later
MNPP 13 moustaches of Halloween - fun series, now with more Sam Elliott and Vincent Price
/Film to celebrate Dario Argento a ranking of his features. His most famous film, Suspiria, is NOT number one!
Next Best Picture on recent under 15 minute performances nominated for Oscars with some possibilities this year like Sam Elliott and Daniel Kaluuya

Off Screen or Behind the Scenes
Wall Street Journal thinks there is an atmosphere of fear at Netflix with their quick firings
Variety Boy George interview as Culture Club releases their first album since 1999. It's called "Life" -- ftr I think "Colour By Numbers," their 1983 album is one of the most perfect albums ever recorded
Playbill 10 plays and musicals that only require 2 actors
Playbill Wicked is about to turn 15. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel are sharing two things they added to the musical that weren't in the original script/score.
• Fast Company examines the state of Hollywood's middle class. Turns out the proliferation of content isn't good for everyone and the reasons why aren't all that apparent from the outside (shouldn't more content mean more job opportunities?). Note: this website has annoying ads that are confusing to get out of in order to read the article (hint) scroll down without hitting that scroll down sign!

I'm so depressed about FilmStruck. This is a huge loss for cinephiles. I only hope an alternative emerges for those of us who loved it. (Yes, I know about Kanopy, but it's not available to most of us.)

That Next Best Picture piece is illuminating. So people have complained about Elliott possibly winning for such minimal screentime, but he basically has the same screentime as Janney did in I, Tonya. People are just conditioned to expect that the Best Supporting Actor/Actress feel like a co-lead of a film.

Kept putting off subscribing to Filmstruck, hope it comes back.

For some reason I always preferred "Kissing to Be Clever" to "Colour by Numbers."

I had to give up on that Argento Ranking List immediately - calling anything except Giallo his worst movie is already questionable, but putting Stendhal at the bottom is nuts. Granted I probably overestimate it because Thomas Kretschmann is ASTONISHINGLY HOT in it but compared to Giallo (one of the worst things I have ever sat through) and compared to Argento's Dracula (also with Kretschmann, and mindboggingly inept) Stendhal is a masterpiece.

I also side-eye people who like Deep Red more than Suspiria though -- DR has some gorgeous crazy stuff going on but David Hemmings is AWFUL in it. Just unbearable.

R.I.P. Filmstruck. The Z-Channel of streaming. Fuck AT&T for making the lives of cinephiles even worse.

I'm a little more than apalled you like the emotionally exploitative CAPHERNAUM (although the kid is awesome, doesn't make the film better as a whole)

I hope you watch HAPPY AS LAZZARO, inexplicably not in any conversation. And really hope it lands in the FBA as I think is tha kind of film that will blow your mind.

Just that.

you're all going to kill me, but I think that it is really likely that DGA and GG Director will go to Spike Lee and as result we may end having this distribution of the wealth of the class of 2018:

Picture - BlackKklansman
Director - Spike Lee, BlackKklansman
Actor - Viggo Mortensen, Green Book (or Christian Bale, Vice)
Actress - Glenn Close, The Wife
Supporting Actor - Sam Elliott, A Star is Born
Supporting Actress - Amy Adams, Vice
Original Screenplay - Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
Adapted Screenplay - Spike Lee & others, BlackKklansman
Foreign Film - Roma
Cinematography - Roma
Film Editing - BlackKlansman
Sound (either editing or mixing) - A Star is Born
Song - A Star is Born

I’m seeing CYEFM? this week. Just wondered if you think there’s any chance McCarthy could win over the Close/Colman/GaGa clusterfuck?

October 27, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterAH

Thanks for all these links (as ever!).

On the Cuarón story: as far as I can tell, he can only be nominated for five for Roma: Picture, Directing, Original Screenplay, Cinematography and Film Editing. The Foreign Language Film nomination - and win, it it goes that far - will go to Mexico, not to him. It's true, as Kris says in his article, that the Academy recently began adding the director's name to the Foreign Language Film statuette (they began it in 2014 with Pavel Pawlikowski for Ida) but the director doesn't actually get the Oscar nomination or win. Still, I think Cuarón has an excellent chance of getting five nominations - and all will be well-deserved.

I second your motion. If only for something as clumsy as the last 45 min of Star Is Born, as generic and populist as Green Book are stopped.

This is really becoming my Oscars Season nightmare. The best films of the year so far for me are no one (I have yet to see Roma) of the ones all are mentioning. Still to see: Beale, although Barry Jenkings overused POvs, talking to the camera-shit trailer its getting on my nerves, and Chazelle is good to bookend films but enough with austonauts stories! and MY GOD I hope Glenn is good on that one and not looking like desperately seeking Oscar because Albert Nobbs sucked at it.

What an uninteresting year for the Oscars this is. Crossing my fingers ROMA delivers, at least.

The Spike Lee film is bonkers and have some gross strokes but at least is funny/observing/entertaining/really on time. Just not as good as Get Out. But something is something.

PS: Really, the Oscar pundits should really stop annoiting the winners at TIFF as possibilities just based on facts. Last year I had a stroke (on disgust) with the inep Billboards. Sorry but when the Torontonians became torch-bearers of good taste in filmmaking? Why not ask AMPAS to include them officialy as memberes, then? You cannot be serious.

I kept putting off getting FilmStruck too. And the ads were always RIGHT THERE on Facebook!! ugh!!!

Saw Boy George and Culture Club last year, and they were super fun. Go see them!!

R.I.P. Filmstruck! An absolute blow to cinephiles, and AT&T can suck it. (P.S. Corporate mergers/acquisitions are the worst.)

Loved your Next Best Picture guest spot and cannot wait to see Can You Ever Forgive Me? but, damn, the host ought to brush up on his old and current Hollywood players. "Talluyah Backhead"? "Nicole Holofceña"? As a film reviewer and podcaster, he's never heard of these poeple before? Yikes.

October 27, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

The industry one more times pushes cinephiles to illegal download. I don't get it!

October 28, 2018 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Chofer: Happy as Lazzaro was picked up by Netflix, so you can expect to disappear from the conversation entirely with no promotion.

October 28, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMike in Canada

Can You Ever Forgive Me? is soooooo good. This is what we have been waiting for from McCarthy. That courtroom speech reminded me that she's not just about giving the giggles. Side note: Grant also is note perfect without going too over-the-top.

This is turning into the worst nightmare Best Actress year - Close, McCarthy, Colman - why this year? Whhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy???????????

October 28, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

I have a feeling mcCarthy is going to possibly sneak up for a win come awards play, which would be very very well deserved.

October 28, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRizz

McCarthy not upsetting Close. And before anyone says Cher, Moonstruck was a huge hit that was popular enough to earn two more Oscar wins. Melissa's movie maybe a lone nod for her costar in supporting actor easily.
