Golden Globe Nominating Begins!
My oh my but awards season is speeding up. Today ballots go out to the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assocation. Better known as those crazies that give out the Golden Globes. We adore the Globes here at TFE because if you look back at their history many great films and performances and TV series have won that were never honored at the Oscars or Emmys, particularly those of the comic or musical persuasion.
10 dream nominations we're rooting for, however likely or unlikely after the jump...
1. Crazy Rich Asians and A Simple Favor for Best Picture, Comedy or Musical
2. Toni Collette (Hereditary) and Nicole Kidman (Destroyer) both in Best Actress, Drama because we need some Aussie Actress power celebrated especially since Oscar might stiff them...
3. Two or all three actresses from The Favourite in Best Actress, Comedy or Musical just to freak people out and because the Globes is the only organization that still sometimes rejects category fraud.
4. Burning AND Shoplifters for Foreign Film since Asian movies need all the media pushing they can get to convince Oscar to nominate them.
5. Michael B Jordan in Black Panther for Best Supporting Actor
6. LaKeith Stanfield in Sorry to Bother You for Best Actor, Comedy. That category seems bereft of options so please let them do cool things with it. Actually let's give them suggestions in the comments. WHO SHOULD BE NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTOR, COMEDY OR MUSICAL. Go!
7. An unexpectedly strong showing across the board for Can You Ever Forgive Me?
8. A shocking nomination somewhere for Disobedience (score or supporting actor) or Tully (actress or screenplay)
9. A supporting actress nomination for Elizabeth Debicki in Widows since we need her 6'2¾" gorgeousity towering over lesser mortals on the red carpet
10. Spike Lee for Best Director just to stick it to Oscar and remind them that the Globes were rambunctious and savvy enough to nominate him for Best Director for Do the Right Thing (1989)

Glenn Close in Best Actress Drama. I'll keep saying this as long as the season goes.
A Star is Born in their rightful category of a musical.
So much yes to No. 9. Elizabeth Debicki is overdue for her rightul recognition.
Fingers crossed for some love for A Simple Favor! If that movie could get in anywhere, it'd be the Globes!
hopefully they nominate a bunch of actors from crazy rich asians to remind people that diversity in acting nominations could stand to be a lot more diverse
to boost the numbers in best actor [c/m] they should bump up mahersahla ali
Michelle Yeoh in Supporting Actress. The category seems to be in flux, and maybe the Globes will give her a boost.
Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys! But especially Keri Russell.
Andrew Dice Clay would make a great, left-field Supporting Actor nominee. The Globes don't do that as much anymore.
Something, ANYTHING, for The Rider!
The globes for all the flack they got last year for an all male director list have shown much more in the past to be better at nominating diverse directors. I mean they nominated Ava for Selma, Spike for DTRT & many other directors who've been looked over for all male lineups in the past.
What I want to see that I'm not expecting is Hearts Beat Loud making a dent in the comedy/musical categories especially for song. I do hope to see CRA do well even though I do think it will easily get in for picture and actress. Yeoh as a supporting nom would be great and hopefully start her journey to a nom because while it's not a revelutionary performance it's been too long that an asian actress has not be nominated and for Yeoh it would be a well earned career nom.
I do hope also that the 2019 cast of Little Women get nommed and we can get a cast reunion pic. Those include Saoirse (MQOS), Florence (The Little Drummer Girl), Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects), Laura Dern (The Tale), Bob Odenkirk (BCS) and Meryl maybe for Mary Poppins.
Not motivated by much this season outside of being Team Close. Would be nice if the Globes recognized Jonah Hill for Mid90s since the child actors from the cast have no chance since the Spirits ignored them.
Comedy Actor - I'll take both lead actors from Stan & Ollie, please. Put them with Stanfield, Viggo (I'm assuming Green Book is Comedy?) and Malek. Viggo will win.
Buscemi for Death of Stalin would be an excellent nod for Lead Actor in a Comedy
Go Blackkklansman & Spike Lee and go Can You Ever Forgive Me & Melissa McCarthy! And Toni Collette, of course!
Top 5 hopes
1. Rami malek for bohemian rhapsody
2. Spike lee for directing blackkklansman
3. Ralph breaks the internet and isle of dogs beating Pixar in animated feature
4. Green book gets the most nominations. I want to see more comedies like this nominated awards
5. Nicholas brjttell for if Beale street could talk
No one has seen Mary Poppins yet, but if it's any good, I could see the Globes nominating Lin-Manuel Miranda in best actor, comedy or musical.
Nicholas Hoult supporting Actor for The Favourite which seems like a Globe thing to do.
Yes, PULEEEZ, let Toni get in for Hereditary! That pic lifts my soul.

#Cash. This article in Variety is practically a review of Mary Poppins Returns (and a very good review at that!)... "The right movie at the right time".

I'd like to see Johnathan Pryce in The Wife nominated in Supporting,I know the film is all about Glenn but he manages to be off putting and sympathetic all in the same scene.
As long as this is the beginning of a long coronation season for Glenn Close winning Best Actress (watch her not even get nominated), everything else is gravy.
A season without a Jessica Chastain Golden Globe Nomination that leads nowhere just doesn't seem right.
Paul Schrader for Director and Screenplay, please! And Ethan Hawke for Actor - Drama.
I’d love to see a Golden Globes directors slate:
Claire Denis, “High Life”
Debra Granik, “Leave No Trace”
Tamara Jenkins, “Private Life”
Mimi Leder, “On the Basis of Sex”
Claire Zhao, “The Rider”
Think of how many things the GG could accomplish with that strategy. They could stick it to all the other awards bodies, and make the other awards bodies look bad. Everybody who ever criticized them for being starf***ers is now on the receiving end of the criticism. The GGs appear forward looking and new, the others so mired in the past, they can’t even nominate a token woman. There’s no downside to this strategy for the GGs since “Golden Globe: Director” isn’t a coveted honour. Use it for strategic revenge.
If Melissa McCarthy isn’t nominated, I’ll freak.
Huppert for The Romanoffs would be so deserved and wonderful.
I hope Smallfoot gets an Animated Feature nod.
All I want for Christmas is a BOOK CLUB nomination in Musical/Comedy Actress.
Weisz double nominee for The Favourite and Disobedience.
McAdams and Nivola.
Theron for Tully and Mulligan for Wildlife.
Jonathan Pryce for the Wife.
Glenn Glenn Glenn.
Rachel Weisz for best actress drama for Disobedience
Alex Wolff, HEREDITARY
Many of these probably won't happen but I am keeping my fingers crossed for:
Ethan Hawke, First Reformed
Ben Foster, Leave No Trace
Toni Collette, Hereditary
Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Kindergarten Teacher
Kathryn Hahn, Private Life
Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade
Alessandro Nivola, Disobedience
Steven Yeun, Burning
and Her Majesty Michelle Yeoh, Crazy Rich Asians

Just to provoke, but also real:
I still don't understand all the Glenn Close love when Toni Collette is way better than her!!!
My wishes would be:
Elizabeth Debicki & Jason Ritter for The Tale
Carey Mulligan & Toni Collette
Rachel Weisz & Alessandro Nivola
All three The Favourite ladies
Russell Hornsby (The Hate U Give) & Steven Yeun (Burning)
Border in Foreign
And of couse a double nomination for Elizabeth Debicki (Widows)
@Adri - not even considering Marielle Heller? THe most realistic chance for a female director nom this year!
My wishes - I'm a simple gal - Michelle Yeoh for Crazy Rich Asians & Julia Roberts for Homecoming :)
Why anybody is talking about EMMA THOMPSON in The Children Act ? It's a towering, layered performance even by Emma's high standards, hope she makes into BA Drama. Also: Double nominations for JULIA ROBERTS ( Homecoming and Ben is Back) , RACHEL WEISZ ( Disobedience and The Favourite) and AMY ADAMS ( Sharp Objects and Vice); BLAKE LIVELY , BA Comedy for A Simple Favor, ETHAN HAWKE for First Reformed, RAMI MALEK for Bohemian Rhapsody; SHARON STONE for Mosaic; CHARLIZE THERON and Mackenzie Davis fot Tully; CAREY MULLIGAN and JAKE GYLLENHAAL for Wildlife.
@Roger
Co-sign with you on the nomination of Huppert for The Romanoffs: "House of Special Purpose" - truly what Miriam Bales said in the New Republic about Huppert as auteur-actress.
Come to think of it, even if a lot of viewers (TFE folks included) turned their backs on The Romanoffs, there's some serious quality actress work to be found there: Diane Lane, Isabelle Huppert, Kathryn Hahn, Christina Hendricks, Amanda Peet, Ines Melab, Radha Mitchell, Annet Mahendru, Marthe Keller, Emily Rudd, Kerry Bishé, Maria Evoli, and a very distinct Scarlet Dergal.
This Friday will feature the last episode and yet despite the highs and lows of this series, I will be a tad sad not to see the idiomatically eccentric characters Matthew Weiner assembled in The Romanoffs.
And here's hoping Shea Whigham and Marianne Jean-Baptiste get nods for their roles in Homecoming. Julia Roberts, Stephan James and Bobby Cannavale are excellent but Whigham and Jean-Baptiste are, to me, the beating hearts of this series.
No Helen Mirren!!!
They always find a way to nominate her for anything lol
David, you preempted my SAG predictions:
Best Actress: Helen Mirren, Winchester
Best Supp. Actress: Helen Mirren, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
What I still don't understand is the love for Michael B. Jordan? Epic facepalm!!
Anna and the Apocalypse will have an eligible release before the end of the year. May the Globes see fit to honor an excellent musical comedy in the categories that are designed to recognize excellent musical comedies.
I hope amy gets the double nomination for vice and sharp objects, and wins for sharp objects, also overall sharp objects overperforming, especially supporting nomination for eliza scanlen.
As for movies I hope emiky blunt wins for poppins.
Eder -- in general I am against double nominations because it cuts off so many worthy performers and if someone is already honored share the wealth (unless both performances are simply undeniable!)
I wish will be nominated Amy Schumer for I Feel Pretty, i don't understand why they prefer nominated good acting in dramedy movies instead of comic funny/hilarious/performances.
hopin, wishin for julia roberts getting in for either ben is back or homecoming.. or both, why not?
I think a surprise nom for Pike in A Private War could happen. Still don't understand why Pike is not even listed on the prediction chart, not even under the tier 4 longshots.
Would love to see nominations for Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Kindergarten Teacher), Michelle Pfeiffer (Where is Kyra?) and Charlie Plummer (Lean on Pete); and a supporting nod for Steven Yeun (Burning) would seriously rock my world! I mean it is so obviously deserving, why can't this happen? Foreign film nominations for Sorry Angel or An Elephant Sitting Still would also be nice, but I don't believe in miracles.
My wishes for some surprise Golden Globe nominations:
BEST ACTOR - MUSICAL/COMEDY
Paul Rudd, Ideal Home
Keanu Reeves, Destination Wedding
Utkarsh Ambudkar, Basmati Blues
BEST ACTRESS - DRAMA
Michelle Pfeiffer, Where is Kyra?
BEST ACTRESS - COMEDY/MUSICAL
Winona Ryder, Destination Wedding
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
Basmati Blues - “Our Voices Will Be Heard” “Foolish Heart” “The Greater Good”
The Forgiven - “Forgiven” (Toni Braxton)
@markgordonuk Our hopes for Jessica Chastain’s Golden Globe nom this year rests on WOMAN WALKS AHEAD!
Michelle Pfeiffer in 'Where is Kyra' for a nomination. Unfortunately, the movie seems too low key and the studio has no money to promo it, and Michelle hates promoing stuff herself.
