Watch at Home: Dumplin', Searching, and Leave No Trace

What's newly available for home viewing these past few weeks? We've neglected to keep you updated of late in the rush to awards season  but this is important since there are several awards contenders that are newly available.

DVD/Blu-Ray

The Little Stranger - Lenny Abrahamson (Room) returns with a ghost story costume drama.
Lizzie -  Kristen Stewart and Chloe Sevigny star in this lesbian drama about the infamous ax wielding Lizzie Borden
McQueen - the acclaimed documentary about the fashion designer - it's eligible for the Oscars.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout - the latest installment in Tom Cruise's evergreen franchise with death defying stunts, double crossing, and (this time) Henry Cavill's moustache and muscles.
Searching - John Cho is nominated for Best Actor at the Spirit Awards for this sleeper hit about a man searching for clues online when his daughter goes missing

ALSO NEWISH: Peppermint, Smallfoot, The Equalizer 2The Nun, The Happytime Murders, and Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days.

Great rental deals and streaming options after the jump...

Leave No Trace Debra Granik took Best Director at LAFCA for this Indie Spirit nominated father/daughter drama with very fine performances from Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie about people living on the margins (and on public land). It's more than worth your 99¢ if you haven't yet seen it.
Hearts Beat Loud -Another father/daughter film, this one about a musically inclined family. Chris is a big fan as we've see in his year in review and in his Soundtracking column.
Street Smart  -A legitimately interesting 80s relic about a reporter, a prositute, and a pimp that we wrote about a few years back. It brought Morgan Freeman his first Oscar nomination.

-Well that certainly was a surprise. And the one free pass you were not supposed to get from me."

Brand New Streaming

Dumplin' - a coming of age and into body positivity comedy on Netflix about an overweight girl (Danielle McDonald) and her beauty-pageant loving mother (Jennifer Aniston). Dolly Parton is seeking an Oscar nomination for one of her soundtrack contributions "Girl in the Movies". [ICYMI - December on Netflix]
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel Season 2 - The Globe & Emmy winning & future SAG darling show is back. Reviewed by Spencer here. [ICYMI - December on Prime]

If you had told me in 200 that the Mission Impossible Franchise would grow into being one of the best franchises over two full decades I would have rolled me eyes. But they just keep coming and arguably get better. Quite a feat.

SEARCHING is one of my favorite films this year. John Cho is superb in it.

I don't know how widely available it is, but have you checked out KANOPY? In many places, it's free with a library card. They have a kind of dumb system where you can only spend 10 credits a month, but they've got A24's entire catalog, a ton of Criterion, and stuff like "Hearts Beat Loud" have been free on there for months.

It's an incredibly useful resource with a TON of world cinema, and a better general selection than many streaming services.

Thanks for this -- I was wondering if I'd ever be able to see "Hearts Beat Loud."

Fallout is still my #1 of the year. The last three M:I movies are damn cinematic treasures.

John Cho is so hot. That is all.

Street Smart features a terrific Kathy Baker, who was robbed of an Oscar nomination. Sigh.

I maintain that Searching was an amazing film. Definite cult-classic in the making.

Dumplin is one of the worst movies I've seen this year, and I've seen a lot of bad movies. I swear it's like people are judging movies on their progressive ideals now.

I thought Searching started off so great and Cho is amazing, but fell apart towards the end. It turned into a different type of movie than I would've liked.

Unfortunately, I must agree with Tr about "Dumplin". I really like Aniston, but this did not help her career.

JJ-Word.

Tr -- yeah, it's a pretty lame movie but at least it has cute moments. People are just so forgiving of movies that they dont pay for. I've yet to see one of those netflix romantic comedies that was better than "decent"... they're harmless but they evaporate in instants and they're all baggy feeling as if editing were a thing of the past.

everyone -- i still have not seen SEARCHING. Must get on that.
