"The Irishman" leads the nominations from the Online Film Critics Society

The OFCS was founded back in 1997 just as film criticism was exploding on the web but still disrespected by old media. Since their founding 22 years ago there is less reason for their existence (all critics are primarily "online film critics" these days) but we've always liked them because the taste level is consistent. Let's start with their nominees and move on to other winners from other associations, at home and abroad.

IFCA
(Israeli Film Critics Association)

Film: Tel Aviv on Fire
Director: Nadav Lapid, Synonyms
Best Screenplay:Tel Aviv on Fire
Best Actor: Kais Nashif and Yaniv Biton, Tel Aviv on Fire
Best Actress: Betalehem Asmamawe, Fig Tree
Breakthrough Award: Yona Rozenkier - Acting, Directing, Writing of The Dive
Artistic Achievement Award: Cinematography, Peaches and Cream
Best International Film: Parasite
Best Film of the Decade: [TIE] Zero Motivation and The Kindergarten Teacher

Luxembourg's Oscar submission Tel Aviv on Fire, which was successful in the States, was the group's big winner though we like that Synonyms made a move on Best Director. Interestingly neither of their tied votes for "Best of the Decade", Zero Motivation or The Kindergarten Teacher, were submitted by Israel for the Oscars in their respective years.

The Florida critics had some interesting runners up but most exciting is their fully vested interest in praising Portrait of a Lady on Fire at every opportunity with wins for Picture, Director, Foreign Film, and a runner up citation in Cinematography

OAFFC
(Online Association of Female Film Critics)
This is the newest female critics association. They're in their third year now. The other two female critics organizations: Alliance of Women Film Journalists (founded in 2006) and the Women Film Critics Circle (founded in 2004) are also still handing out prizes. We're not sure what the different quite is between the three groups since none of them are regionally focused.

Three prizes for Apollo 11. It's had a big Oscar campaign too so it might it pop up as a surprise nominee in editing? Feels possible to us.

Are you ever going to update the reviews tab? Feels like it’s been forever and would love to know your grades for joker, bombshell, little women etc

Always the best ones

Where was all this Apollo 11 love when "First Man" was out last year? For shame.

Crazy the number of groups failing to nominate Tom Hanks for what should be a safe bet.

# Is it me or it was a nice weekend for ScarJo?
.
# Also the lack of Leonardo DiCaprio in Best Actor critics mentions (in spite critics going for OUATIHOLLYWOOD here and there) makes me wondering: are we gonna see Egerton upseting DiCaprio at the Oscars? It seems it is all about Pitt when it comes to acting awards for OUATIHOLLYWOOD.
.
# Are we underestimating PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE for Oscars? I'm predicting a Best Cinematography nom for Mathon, but would this French production be able to crash Best Picture and Best Director? Or Best Original Screenplay? It's such a great feminist movie and it is directed by a women (which is a topic that's trending this days).

One note on the Apollo 11 love from Utah: It premiered at Sundance last year and has continued to have a regular presence throughout the state this year, both with extended runs in theaters and offering free screenings to local communities.

Isla Fisher was great in The Beach Bum, and I was shocked to see the film mentioned anywhere this awards season (although the film *was* made in and about South Florida). Really happy she gets to feel recognized.

It's almost all Pitt when you come to Tarantino's film...so they could avoid the category fraud and place him in Best Actor where actually he belongs

Is Scarlett being underestimated cos of the Den Driver love from critics, she has a great narrative for a win,If she wins the GG which she never has then Renne has competition.

Florida is consistently one of the most interesting critics' groups - they named Sakura Andô Best Supporting Actress and Melissa McCarthy Best Actress last year. (Also, I think you have their Breakout Winner and Runner-Up reversed.)

December 25, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterjules

@Mirko: Pitt would never by able to be nominted in Lead, like Mahershala Ali would´nt be nominted last year in Best Actor. But Pitt is more supporting for me as Ali, that was a real category fraud and I hate that, like you all hate it.
