Online Film Critics Society Have Got 'Mommy' Issues

Well this is a pleasant surprise!

Glenn here with a look at the slate of nominees that the Online Film Critics Society sent our way today. You can thank me for a smidgen of the rather wonderful list since I am a member. The cynical person that I am assumed group think and the homogeny of the pack would give us the usual suspects, but the OFCS blessedly included some curveballs and left of field choices that should make the AFI and other singularly Oscar-hunting awards bodies look foolish. Let's take a look.

This being an online critics organisation, they are going to lean a little bit to the "cool" side of things. Having said that, only four of the organisation's nominations for Best Picture are likely going to get correlating Oscar nominees - they could be Boyhood, Grand Budapest, Selma and Whiplash. The rest of the list is spectacularly diverse with three foreign language films, a semi-experimental sci-fi, a creepy genre thriller, and the other meta-superhero flick from 2014. Speaking of which, the omission of Birdman is as surprising as it is delightful. I mean, I like the movie, and certainly much more than Whiplash, but I have no qualms with it missing for the sake of Xavier Dolan's Mommy. Not one bit.

Online Film Critics Society chooses 12 Years a Slave

Tim here - I won't keep you very long, since it's just another damn critics' award, but the OFCS has announced its winners this morning, with 12 Years a Slave winning five times, including only the second award that Michael Fassbender has received from any group to date. The asterisk here is that Her wasn't made widely available to the membership at large before the conclusion of voting, and it's the kind of film that tends to do well with OFCS.

Online Film Critics Society announces its nominations.

It's Tim, to discuss with you the Online Film Critics Society nominations. A day late, admittedly, but these sorts of lapses will happen in this rampant crush of critics group awards.. Anyway, as one of the Team Experience members who happens to be in the OFCS myself, it falls naturally to me to make a big darn deal about this particular announcement.

And in all immodesty, it's one of the more interesting sets of titles that has shown up this year. We were just complaining about groups like the AFI using their awards as nothing but Oscar predictions, were we not? There's certainly not much of that going on here, at least not at the nomination stage - in fairness, I fully expect that the winners will be part of the great Gravity and 12 Years a Slave love-in (and Her, if the group at large ever receives screener DVDs) - with some titles that have received absolutely no attention elsewhere and likely won't again. And that's what year-end awards and lists are about, to my mind: not commemorating the same three movies and two performances as everybody else, but passing around names of things that you really should have seen, it's so great.

This year also finds the OFCS made the jump from a traditional five nominees to a new-fashioned ten. We all undoubtedly have opinions on such matters; some of us, unfortunately, are prevented for reasons of professional ethics from communicating those opinions in public.

The nomination leaders include 12 Years a Slave with 8, and Her and Inside Llewyn Davis at six each (surprisingly, The Wind Rises, with 5, ends up ahead of Gravity's 4).

Holy Christmas Eve. It's More Critics Prizes

Argo is still soaring as precursors go...Tis the Season to Hear from Film Critics Circles and Orgs and Societies. The big news today – if you can call anything Off-Christmas news on Christmas Eve -- is that the Online Film Critics Society have announced their annual nominations with a parade of accordion accompanists on the streets of Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. Or at least that’s what I wish they’d done since they nominated Holy Motors for four prizes instead of the typical requisite runner up position here or there or nowhere. Instead of an accordion parade they just posted their nominations online…as societies are prone to do.

But they’re definitely worth mentioning this year as they seem to be sort-of-maybe a-little-bit-kind-of thinking for themselves beyond the standard pet-peevish traps -- there's plentiful category fraud (even though it doesn't really make sense for critics groups to do that unless they think of themselves as oscar pundits first in which case they might want to check their purpose and/ormission statements!) and the dismissals of Hugh Jackman and Matthew McConaughey, awardage impulses which tend to strike me as genre and gender-norms bias, respectively.
