"Da 5 Bloods" leads the Online Film Critics Society nominations... but fails to win

The Online Film Critics Society, founded in 1997 back when there was still a noticeable divide between print and web (there's zero difference anymore... it's only size and reputation of outlets since everything is online) have announced their nominations for the film year. "The Irishman" leads the nominations from the Online Film Critics Society

The OFCS was founded back in 1997 just as film criticism was exploding on the web but still disrespected by old media. Since their founding 22 years ago there is less reason for their existence (all critics are primarily "online film critics" these days) but we've always liked them because the taste level is consistent. Let's start with their nominees and move on to other winners from other associations, at home and abroad.

OFCS Winners

Mission: Impossible - Fallout was one of only 2 films to win multiple prizes from the OFCS that was not on their top ten list (the other was Black Panther)

The Online Film Critics Society (a couple of TFE's contributors are among their 283 members) have announced their winners for their 22nd annual awards.  Alfonso Cuarón's Roma continues its critical dominance by taking 4 prizes including both best foreign film and best film. Other multiple winners include Black Panther, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, If Beale Street Could Talk, First Reformed, and Hereditary. Four films on their top ten list were shut out of winning any prize: The Favourite,  You Were Never Really Here, Eighth Grade, and Suspiria...  five if you count their #2 film BlacKkKlansman  but we figure the lifetime achievement award for Spike Lee covers that one. "The Favourite" Leads the OFCS Nominations

The Online Film Critics Society have released their nominations for their 21st annual awards. The Favourite leads (as it has quite often this season -- the typical advantage of being an acclaimed period piece with stellar performances) with Roma just behind it. There are some pleasant surprises among their honors and some unpleasant non-surprises (category fraud)

Online Film Critics Choose "Moonlight"

Moonlight took 4 prizes from the OFCS

The Online Film Critics Society, of which I am a member, just announced their winners and... I'd love to say they're a great bunch, but I haven't been able to see at least two of the big winners yet. International release dates (I'm back in Australia) always make voting in these sort of awards a tricky prospect when the need to be early is ever-present, but I have no doubt that the OFCS's selection of Moonlight as the best picture of 2016 is worth cheering about.

The organisation with its some 260 members awarded the Barry Jenkins' drama with three additional wins for Best Director, and duel supporting acting prizes for Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris. Casey Affleck and Natalie Portman took the lead actor awards, Arrival and Hell or High Water took screenplay honours, Kubo and the Two Strings was handed a much-deserved animation win, and the Oscar frontrunner La La Land settled for the two technical prizes that the organization gives out for cinematography and editing.

And proving yet again that South Korea made the wrong choice by not selecting Park Chan-wook's The Handmaiden for the foreign language Oscar, it was awarded Best Film Not in the English Language alongside its nomination for Best Picture.

What do we think that film's Oscar prospects are like? Hong Kong's The Grandmaster surprised with two nominations several years ago - there's certainly precedence. It just depends on whether Oscar's costume and production design voters are having one of those years where they think more outside of the box or fall in line with general Oscar buzz.
