European Film Awards - Voting Now Open
by Nathaniel R
The 32nd annual European Film Awards are happening this December 7th in Berlin. Voting for the People's Choice prize is now open. And -- "gay rights!"-- The Favourite still probably has another award ceremony to get through. Due to the EFA's non-calendar year eligibility as well as the complications of release patterns in multiple countries and the EFA's non-fussiness about dates you'll find that the people's choice options are a very strange mix this year from THREE calendar years worth of movies (2017-2019).
After the jump, that odd group as well as two longlists (to give you festival prioritizing help) before the nominations are announced in early November...
PEOPLE'S CHOICE NOMINEES
- Border (Sweden)
- Cold War (Poland)
It was the big winner at last year's EFAs with five prizes (PICTURE, DIRECTOR, ACTRESS, EDITING, and SCREENPLAY) but is somehow up for people's choice this year! - Dogman (Italy)
- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (UK)
- Girl (Belgium)
- Happy as Lazzaro (Italy)
- Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (UK)
- Pain & Glory (Spain)

- The Purity of Vengeance (also known as Journal 64) (Denmark)
The EFAs proper (the prizes you can't vote on since that's up to the EFA membership itself) wont announce their nominations until November 9th but they have announced the finalist lists for both documentaries and features which are as follows...

I saw Sink or Swim two days ago and I really didn't like it. I can't stand French movies when they try to be "commercial".
Tough choice! I love Cold War, Girl, Dogman, and Lazzaro. I wish Climax! was in the mix. I also love The Favourite but I'm done with that movie.
Ugh.... who and why would anyone want to vote for Fantastic Beasts 2?
As long as Othiefia Stoleman’s do not rob anyone else’s deserved award
Can the inferior performance to Stoleman, but overdue, Close show up here? (Hey, I’m like /3rtful and have my senses about me to know Othiefia was clearly better, but overdue should be the main factor in prizes for a particular calendar year, goddamnit!!)
It warms my heart to see Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! listed alongside The Favourite, Cold War, and Border WHERE IT BELONGS.
Happy as Lazarro for sure!!
"God Exists, Her Name is Petrunija" may be the best film title of all time. I'd want to see it based on that title alone!
@ Evan
WOW. I was thinking exactly the same thing. The movie title is better than the tagline from The Brand New Testament: God exists, he lives in Belgium
PLUS: Balkan cinema is terrific with dark comedy (Who´s Singing Over There?, Underground, Black Cat White Cat ) so this title is a must-see for me.
I saw And then we danced in Cannes and I loved it! Great flick!
Spain selected Almodovar's "Pain & glory" as their submission to the International Film Oscar-rally :)
