First glimpse of "Dune"

by Nathaniel R

If we're already getting the first promotional image of Denis Villeneuve's take on sci-fi literary classic Dune than the movie must still be aiming for its December 18th release date. We find that highly plausible since the movie wrapped its filming in 2019 and movie theaters are going to need some big ticket items when they reopen.  Our friend Boyd Van Hoeij describes Timothée Chalamet's costume like so...

Madonna-tour-dancer-about-to-do-a-reveal look

So you should know that the costumes are by a pair of designers (hey, it's a huge project). Bob Morgan who previously did costume supervision work on movies like Live by Night, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is getting his first full-stop "Costume Designer" credit. He's sharing that with three-time Oscar nominee Jacqueline West (The Revenant, Quills, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). Can't wait to see more.

And for those of you who haven't been following along the movie has a tremendous cast. In addition to Chalamet we're getting delicious actors like Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Oscar Isaac, David Dastmalchian, and Charlotte Rampling  and they'll all be shot by the great Australian cinematographer Greig Fraser (Lion, Bright Star, Let Me In).

The logo is also an eye-popper.

We don't have a running time yet on the picture but the novel has a LOT of material, so it's strange that people keep wanting this to be a movie rather than an epic HBO series or some such. When David Lynch tried to adapt this in 1984 (running time: 2 hours and 17 minutes) they passed out glossaries when you got to the theaters they were so worried about how hard it would be to follow.

UPDATE And now we have even more images. Take a looksie...

Extremely disappointed in the drag color palette but hoping the early photos are misleading in that regard. They seem to have been with West Side Story recently and definitely were with Mad Max Fury Road a handful of years back.

I'll be like, "One for the new Charlotte Rampling, please."

LOL same, Tyler! Same!

I thought this was going to be a two-parter, like IT. Is that not the case?

Looking forward to it, primarily to see TC head up a huge sci-fi film but also to be back in cinemas.

Tyler is a mood

Can’t wait for this ! I Hope this is a sign that they have no plan to move this to 2021

The director and cast make me excited, but I hope the whole movie isn't as dreary-looking. I miss when movies could be colorful and taken seriously.

We do not need another version of "Dune" specially from the guy who gave us the endless and pointless "Blade Runner" sequel

April 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

It looks cool but I wish it was more out there like what Alejandro Jodorowsky had for his attempted version of the story which was fucking insane.

I'll make my final judgment once we see actual footage. This still inspires no curiosity nor excitement in me. For all the fault to be had with Lynch's movie its visual style is unmatched by most lavishly designed productions.

Following last weekend's hilarious skewering of Chalamet (MasterClass Quarantine Edition) by Chloe Fineman on Saturday Night Live, I can't even look at a picture of the man without laughing.

Looks gloomy and pretentious. I'm so not interested.

Gosh, people sure are rushing to judge a film by a single image, aren't they? That's not a virtue, you know.

April 13, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDaniella Isaacs

Peggy Sue, Villeneuve IS gloomy and pretentious.

April 14, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMiss Deakins

His hair is glorious.

Doesn't this look exactly (apart from the backdrop, obviously) of the first Blade Runner 2049 footage of Ryan Gosling in his long coat walking towards the camera with his head down.

The Oscar Isaac promo image sold me.

April 14, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterjules

Oscar Isaac is in it so I will go see for him. Nothing can beat the weirdness of the David Lynch production even though the sci fi channel mini series made more sense of the story.

April 14, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

Timothee looks like he's about to belt some 30 Seconds to Mars lyrics. "On his face was a map of the world!"

April 14, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

Not quite up to the standard Villeneuve and DP Greig Fraser set with their previous work but I'm willing to roll with it, regardless. Production stills don't necessarily reflect what the look of the final film.

April 14, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterWallace McKelvey

Meh.

Meh.

Except for Momoa and Isaac.

Just another dimly lit gallery of Uber-masculine moods. At least Lynch’s had Lynch.

I expected more from the man who made a sequel to Blade Runner that was so vibrant and distinctive and deviated from the original aesthetics pre-assigned to it.

April 15, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterManny

The novel "Dune" is simply too complex, too layered, and too bleeding long to give it anything but the HBO "Game of Thrones" treatment. Seeing it in a theater, even at "Ben Hur" length, would be like reading a Reader's Digest version of "War and Peace".
