More prizes: IFMCA, Nevada, Utah, Seattle, Dallas Ft Worth, and Washington DC

by Nathaniel R

The awards for 2020 cinema aren't done yet! First things first the British Independent Film Awards were held so we've updated that post to reflect their winners. Rocks was the big winner with five wins but The Father far behind it in nomination totals, won three.

Now here are five more new sets of critics groups from Nevada, Utah, Seattle, Dallas Ft Worth, DC. There are no new names or titles winning except for Nevada honoring Glenn Close for Hillbilly Elegy and The Father in Screenplay and Seattle's choice of Documentary (The History of the Seattle Mariners: Supercut Edition). Utah goes slightly off consensus preferring both Minari and One Night in Miami to Nomadland in the top Picture/Director categories. Utah also has two unusual choices in runners up positions like Lukasz Zal for cinematography and Cristin Milioti for Palm Springs for a genre performance category. We'd congratulate Utah on their good taste except that they also declare that Chicago 7 was better written and edited than Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal/Tenet respectively so you win some you lose some.

But first let's start with the International Film Music Critics Association winners since by its nature, it's forced to be different from the other awards being passed out at the moment...

LOL Seattle WOULD pick the doc that's about their big Baseball team. How completely obnoxious.

I know.

Critics worldwide may have to censure the Nevada group over the Hillbilly love, like an angry GOP.

Really digging all the love for Promising Young Woman. My favorite film of last year. Mulligan can win the Oscar 😊

Supporting Actress at this point may look like a 3 way race

Bakalova
Close
Youn

I could see Seyfried surprising, though... but I have the feeling that this is Bakalova's to lose and we'll know (if the three are nominated, because oddly enough I don't think any of them is locked by any means for a nomination) if Make Up is given first and is won by Hillbilly Elegy, THEN, Close might win as well.

Youn... reality check: she's a veteran foreign language performance... when was the last time that a supporting actress performance was for a non-english performance? It would break all stats, her victory... plus, they tend always to vote for the younger, unless the award is seen as a career achievement (Close).

But I think this is a Goldie Hawn, Marisa Tomei, Mira Sorvino year...

and I am sorry because it feels like I am spaming in the Supporting Actress race, but it's the most exciting and unpredictable race in a decade?

February 20, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

Hilarious how Soul was runner-up for best picture in Utah, but didn't even win best animated picture.

February 20, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterOpinionGiver

@Opiniongiver

It seems some critics groups have kind of uncompatibility between Picture/Animated/Documentary/Foreign. If they give it Picture or runner up, they would give the other winner and runner up to other two (probably to raise attention to more obscure films)

I may be wrong, though

Oscars will give it to the old hillbilly bitch. Sigh. *punches wall*

Opiniongiver & Jesus -- some critics groups have rules about winning multiple prizes (as some festivals do, as well) which might be what happened there. Usually if it's a straight vote from a nominee pool you won't end up with weird results like that. but when it's a discussion based more "jury" style group like oh NYFCC or LAFCA where people are in the room arguing you'll sometimes see incongruities like. I personally love them (though i get why others wouldn't) because it's a "share the wealth" mentality and there's nothing that annoys me moree than sweeps.

Is Daniel pulling ahead in supporting actor being a later release.
Or does Sacha win as body of work and being in the best picture front runner / runner up.
Think Leslie is winning song and not supporting anymore.

Good on THE HISTORY OF THE SEATTLE MARINERS.

Finally a critics group win for Close. Good on you, Mamaw!

I know Close is divisive esp. here on TFE and I don't think we can convince a group to think what the other group thinks/wants. Although I am more of a casual fan of Close, I think her Mamaw is solid and deserving of the Oscar. Tough luck that her well-calibrated perf is in a film mostly loved by general viewers and unloved by critics, but Nevada is the first one to dare name her as their pick for her category.

I always enjoy the IFMCA nominations. They aren't trying to give a surreptitious "Best Film" award , just award the best music, and their taste is better than the Academy's (usually). This year not one of their finalists made the Academy shortlist: The Call of the Wild, Enola Holmes, Fukushima 50, The Personal History of David Copperfield, Wonder Woman 1984. About half of the Academy's shortlist did show up in the genre categories, though. I also like their 2 archival categories. I like those old lush Hollywood scores, especially for Biblical epics, and it's good to get recommendations for re-recordings in improved sound.
