Emmy Nominations Are Here!

By Abe Friedtanzer

Nominations for the 73rd Emmys have been announced, and while it was nice to see short clips of each of the program nominees, the gimmick of having father and daughter, Ron Cephas Jones and Jasmine Cephas Jones, announce together would have worked considerably better if they had been in the same place and not experiencing a delayed reaction to their joke setups. But let’s move on to the nominees, which are mostly good but sure to reveal painful snubs as we break it down by category. It shouldn’t be much of a surprise that The Crown is the nominations leader with 24 bids, but it did tie with The Mandalorian, which added to its technical total with a few acting, directing, and writing bids.

It took me until I got into the details of the limited series/anthology categories to realize that Small Axe was almost entirely shut out, earning only a cinematography mention. I think that has more to do with its questionable TV format, though that didn’t stop Hamilton from gobbling up a horrifying seven acting slots. Another underperformer was Girls5eva, which managed exactly one nomination, for writing. It was also a sad day for Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, which didn’t score any of the major bids I and others thought it might. That presumed domination by a few series in the supporting categories absolutely happened, though there were a few positive and unexpected inclusions thrown in. Let’s take a closer look at the categories our Emmy team predicted (plus the guest races) and go from there...

Drama Series

The Boys

Bridgerton

The Crown

The Handmaid’s Tale

Lovecraft Country

The Mandalorian

Pose

This Is Us

I’m so happy for Pose, which I didn’t have the confidence to predict, and overjoyed that it also got star Mj Rodriguez a nomination, which is wonderful and so overdue. I also didn’t pick The Boys, which earned a writing bid but otherwise did not earn any other high-profile nominations. The same fate befell Bridgerton, aside from its Regé-Jean Page nomination. I’m particularly happy for Lovecraft Country since, even though I didn’t think it was a perfect show, it was certainly riveting and it’s now been cancelled. It’s good to see This Is Us back here, joining three juggernauts whose hauls were impressive. While The Crown and The Mandalorian shot up from 13 and 15 nominations, respectively, to 24, The Handmaid’s Tale more than doubled last year’s take of 10, outpacing its season two total of 20 with 21 nominations, eight of which were for acting.

Comedy Series

Black-ish

Cobra Kai

Emily in Paris

The Flight Attendant

Hacks

The Kominsky Method

Pen15

Ted Lasso

Here we have our biggest shocker, which is the inclusion of Emily in Paris after a Golden Globes mini-scandal. Most puzzlingly, it earned only one other nomination (production design), making its inclusion here a real mystery. I don’t know why it needed to take the spot of either Girls5eva or Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. The rest of the list is expected. I’m sure Pen15 fans like our own Chris James will be thrilled, as should Cobra Kai enthusiasts, another show that landed here without any other high-profile support. Ted Lasso is the clear favorite here, with 20 nominations, followed by Hacks with an impressive 15.

Limited Series

I May Destroy You

Mare of Easttown

The Queen’s Gambit

The Underground Railroad

WandaVision

Here’s one of my only perfect scores this year, but I didn’t realize until I saw it that Small Axe was also absent from almost every other category. This is a major get for The Underground Railroad considering it didn’t score a single acting nomination. The others all fared pretty well, but nothing compares to WandaVision, which was the second most honored program of the day, with a whopping 23 bids.

TV Movie

Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square

Oslo

Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia

Sylvie’s Love

Uncle Frank

No surprises here. I was foolish to predict Coastal Elites over Oslo. In disappointing news, these five projects only picked up a total of two other nominations, a Dolly Parton choreography mention and music for Oslo. It’s certainly an argument against the existence of this category.

Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us)

Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country)

Josh O’Connor (The Crown)

Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton)

Billy Porter (Pose)

Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason)

Six for six – nothing to report here.

Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Uzo Aduba (In Treatment)

Olivia Colman (The Crown)

Emma Corrin (The Crown)

Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Mj Rodriguez (Pose)

Jurnee Smollett (Lovecraft Country)

I bet on Sarah Paulson over Mj Rodriguez but don’t mind at all that I was wrong. Otherwise, the list is expected and it’s great to see Smollett here given that her nomination was not a sure thing. Aduba made the cut but she is the only one from her show.

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

Giancarlo Esposito (The Mandalorian)

O-T Fagbenle (The Handmaid’s Tale)

John Lithgow (Perry Mason)

Tobias Menzies (The Crown)

Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Chris Sullivan (This Is Us)

Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Michael K. Williams (Lovecraft Country)

Our own Juan Carlos is certainly celebrating the unexpected dominance of his favorite show in this category, with both Fagbenle and Minghella showing up to join past (guest) winner Whitford. I’m disappointed that Sullivan is here again when Justin Hartley deserved the nomination this season, and it’s also a shame not to see John Benjamin Hickey or Anthony Ramos here for In Treatment. It’s nice that Lithgow made the cut, and always good to see Williams.

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

Gillian Anderson (The Crown)

Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown)

Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Aunjanue Ellis (Lovecraft Country)

Emerald Fennell (The Crown)

Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Eight slots for three shows? That doesn’t sound great, though most of these performers are deserving. I would have swapped both Carter and Fennell out for Erin Doherty, who had more to do this season and was great in every scene. It’s also jarring to see Ellis make the cut and Wunmi Mosaku, who had a much bigger year and a more memorable part in my mind, miss. I’m happy for Brewer since she wasn’t a sure thing and has been doing great work on the show for years. Both Tatiana Maslany and Cynthia Nixon aren’t really snubs, and they both have Emmys already and are likely to be nominated again in the future.

Guest Actor in a Drama Series

Don Cheadle (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier)

Charles Dance (The Crown)

Courtney B. Vance (Lovecraft Country)

Carl Weathers (The Mandalorian)

Timothy Olyphant (The Mandalorian)

Who’s excited about Olyphant? I am! Weathers was good but he’s the closest thing to a series regular. I also can’t remember Cheadle’s appearance on his show but oh well.

Guest Actress in a Drama Series

Alexis Bledel (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Claire Foy (The Crown)

McKenna Grace (The Handmaid’s Tale)

Sophie Okonedo (Ratched)

Phylicia Rashad (This Is Us)

I’m delighted that Grace got in, and also happy for Okonedo, who was the biggest nomination her show got. I’m disappointed that Rosario Dawson isn’t here, and there’s no way that Phylicia Rashad is going to win this race after her recent comments.

Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Anthony Anderson (Black-ish)

Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method)

William H. Macy (Shameless)

Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso)

Kenan Thompson (Kenan)

I picked Ted Danson for the shut-out Mr. Mayor over Macy, who earns his show’s only nomination for its final year, bringing its all-time total to sixteen bids over eleven seasons, a real shame given its quality ensemble and what could have been.

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Aidy Bryant (Shrill)

Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant)

Allison Janney (Mom)

Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish)

Jean Smart (Hacks)

This was the first category announced and the best inclusion of the day – Aidy Bryant! I love Shrill and I’m so happy that she’s here. I’m severely disappointed that Jane Levy isn’t, and, though I don’t watch the show, I don’t’ know that Janney needed to return.

Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

Carl Clemons-Hopkins (Hacks)

Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso)

Brendan Hunt (Ted Lasso)

Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso)

Paul Reiser (The Kominsky Method)

Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso)

Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live)

Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live)

Here’s another wonderful surprise: Clemons-Hopkins, who I didn’t expect anyone to notice. They're really a delight on the show, and it’s great that they got recognized. Four bids for Ted Lasso doesn’t feel excessive even though it probably is, and I’m also happy that Reiser made the cut for some underrated work. Too bad about Alex Newell.

Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live)

Hannah Einbinder (Hacks)

Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live)

Rosie Perez (The Flight Attendant)

Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live)

Juno Temple (Ted Lasso)

Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso)

I’m disappointed that Zosia Mamet didn’t get in here because I remember watching the show and thinking she would never be honored for her performance. The rest of the list is great, and congratulations to Bryant on being a double nominee along with her SNL costar Kenan Thompson!

Guest Actor in a Comedy Series

Alec Baldwin (Saturday Night Live)

Dave Chappelle (Saturday Night Live)

Morgan Freeman (The Kominsky Method)

Daniel Kaluuya (Saturday Night Live)

Dan Levy (Saturday Night Live)

I have lots of SNL to watch, apparently. No Anthony Head for Ted Lasso, interestingly.

Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

Jane Adams (Hacks)

Yvette Nicole Brown (A Black Lady Sketch Show)

Bernadette Peters (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist)

Issa Rae (A Black Lady Sketch Show)

Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live)

Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live)

A Black Lady Sketch Show shows up again in this category which mysteriously has more bids that it was supposed to include. Peters shouldn’t be her show’s only representative, and I’m pleased to see the always-superb Adams.

Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie

Paul Bettany (WandaVision)

Hugh Grant (The Undoing)

Ewan McGregor (Halston)

Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton)

Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton)

The very frustrating Hamilton domination begins. I’m happy that McGregor at least made the cut. Grant is the only nominee from his show aside from a production design bid. I didn’t care for The Good Lord Bird, but I’m sure that Ethan Hawke fans are sad not to see him here.

Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie

Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You)

Cynthia Erivo (Genius: Aretha)

Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision)

Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit)

Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown)

I picked Thuso Mbedu over Erivo, but that’s not a real surprise. Nothing more to say here – glad that Coel wasn’t snubbed since that did seem likely for a while.

Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie

Daveed Diggs (Hamilton)

Jonathan Groff (Hamilton)

Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You)

Evan Peters (Mare of Easttown)

Anthony Ramos (Hamilton)

Thomas Brodie-Sangster (The Queen’s Gambit)

The Hamilton domination makes me angry. I was excited to see Brodie-Sangster and didn’t even realize until just now as I’m writing this that Bill Camp was snubbed, which is a real disappointment. Glad at least that Peters got in. I went 1/6 here – Peters was the only one I predicted.

Marielle Heller snubbed.

Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie

Renée Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton)

Phillipa Soo (Hamilton)

Julianne Nicholson (Mare of Easttown)

Jean Smart (Mare of Easttown)

Moses Ingram (The Queen’s Gambit)

Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision)

And here we have another unforgivable snub – Marielle Heller for The Queen’s Gambit. Ingram was good but Heller needed to be nominated. At least Nicholson and Hahn got in, but why does Hamilton need to hog so much of this race?

If you’re so inclined, pour over all the nominees in the tech categories and the stats here. What are you happiest about with this list, and what snub makes you angriest?

It hurts Marielle Heller was snubbed. Also, Emily in Paris? Is it a way to salute Golden Globes?

Friends: The Reunion is nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), so Courtney Cox is (finally!) Emmy nominated as a producer of the show.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJ

Thrilled that Kidman was snubbed for The Undoing, a bad performance in a bad miniseries.

It sends the wrong message when she gets nominations for half baked performances, and she's given a lot of those lately.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJF

HORRIFIED.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Count me one of the outraged Ethan Hawke fans. I don't mind THE GOOD LORD BIRD not getting nominated for limited series, which was hella competitive, but he assuredly should have gotten in, and especially over anyone from HAMILTON, which doesn't even belong in any of these categories.

Same complaint as to Marielle Heller.

Happy for POSE and ecstatic for Mj Rodriguez. Also happy for Olsen and Bettany.

I remember Don Cheadle in FALCON but scratching my head as to his nomination. And I like Don Cheadle!

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterLynn Lee

Courteney Cox is finally nominated, for this and her other show FINALLY.

The Hamilton love is frustrating but at least this is it's last award show. No hate for the production at all, I love it, but how many other performances were left out because of the onslaught?

Hooray for Aidy (fellow Columbia grad), Lovecraft, SNL, Bowen, Kobra and This is Us (altho my heart breaks for Hartley).

Wish Superstore could have fit in there somewhere.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered Commentermikenewq

The numerous SNL inclusions feel lazy at this point, especially in guest acting. No offense but the show is way past its expiration date. And it's at the expense of actors delivering worthy performances who've been overlooked in the past.

Happy PEN15 managed a Comedy Series nod, but upset they couldn't nominate either of the ladies in Lead Actress.

People keep saying Michaela Coel seemed likely to be snubbed--when? I must've missed the memo. Regardless, happy it got what it deserved and I hope it sweeps. At the very least, I hope she wins Lead Actress.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterHmm.

Aidy Bryant and Mj Rodriguez - THRILLED!

No need to add to the outrage chorus re: Hamilton but the Emmy's really need to correct this with rules on filmed staged productions (as do the Golden Globes). Same for SNL. I am a HUGE fan, always have been and always will be, but it riles me giving 4/5 nominees as Guest Actor when these are already huge stars hosting a variety show for a night. Recognize the true guest work in comedy series.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterGreg F

How ridiculous are those Emerald Fennell and Claire Foy nominations? We get it, you watched 'The Crown.'

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterTyler

As always, a combination of correct choices and "no that is somebody making a terrible mistake" -- I can easily slot out Emily in Paris and throw in the Dickinson sapphic second season (Have to keep Jean Smart in the acting category but Hailee Steinfeld needs more recognition despite being Oscar nominated ten years ago)

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJeremy

JF -- agreed on Kidman in Undoing but the Emmys have made much much much lazier choices (including this year) than if they had nominated her for that.

Lynn -- i think he had one scene? I'd be shocked if he even rehearsed. it's strictly show up and deliver a few lines and head out again.

July 13, 2021 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Poor Phil Dunster is the only member of the main Ted Lasso cast not to be Emmy nominated.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterBen

Tyler - seriously. Claire Foy delivered a brief monologue in one episode. Emerald is fun on the show but this is very clearly "she just won an Oscar, I know her!" name recognition. So so lazy.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterGreg F

Lazy voters are the worst. I'm not watching the telecast.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

These are messy

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

So here is the question for the internet hypocrites who accused the golden globes of corruption for nominating Emily in Paris: Are your cancel reports and corruption investigation for Emmys ready?

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSam

Hannah Einbinder's character in HACKS is a LEAD, you ridiculous EMMY people! Gawd, she's in almost every scene. And she's awesome.

Any Hamilton nomination is also ridiculous. Really? So Tonys and Oliviers weren't enough? Just because it's streamed on the little box in our living rooms, or on our phones, does not mean it was produced for television. If that was the case, THE SOUND OF MUSIC should be nominated every year as a TV movie; I'd vote for Maria and company. Eff off, Emmy people.

And eff off, HBO Max, for not commissioning a second series of Lovecraft Country. Misha Green will laugh all the way to the bank, thank you very much Apple+.

Also, there should be NO nominations for The Crown. Ugh. It's super lazy.

Ugh. Now, I also hate the Emmys as much as the Golden Globes.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Sophie Okonedo is much deserved. She blew the roof offa NURSE RATCHED.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDan

Oh yeah, also sad for SMALL AXE, though less surprised.

Don't really mind the excessive supporting actor love for TED LASSO cause I love all those gents. And happy for Bowen Yang, of course! That kid is going PLACES.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterLynn Lee

Also, if Paapa Essiedu doesn't win, I will be very sad. He's an amazing actor.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPam

No Marielle Heller?! Ugh. That snub is the worst.

As to Hacks - Einbinder in a Supporting category is some A+ category fraud. The show has been centered around her. And Clemons-Hopkins instead of Paul Downs? Nooooo. The bits of Downs/his office are always a perfect light balance to the often dark turns in Las Vegas.

As to Janney ... Yeah, she didn't really need to be nominated again. But even if the show is neither subtle nor prestige-y I really like how over time (it's not what it was when it started) it's become a show about 1) people in recovery and 2) ordinary friendships among women of a certain age so anything that shows a series like that is valued, I like.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterScottC

I like the supporting casts of TED LASSO and THE HANDMAID'S TALE, I really do, but four nominations in one category just feels excessive.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

Some thots:
- Small Axe getting the snubs it did is disappointing, but I thoroughly blame Amazon's campaign for it.
- On the same subject, I blame The Underground Railroad being released when it was (WAAAY too damn late for it to really hit with voters) for its snubs.
- Rosario Dawson (my personal winner in that category) getting snubbed for Guest Actress, Drama saddens me.
- 8 nominees is way too many. 5-6 should be the way to go for any awards show.
- LOL @ Hamilton getting the same amount of acting noms it got at the Tony's. And almost the same nominees as well (Chris Jackson getting passed over for Anthony Ramos in Supporting Actor). The only other difference is Soo in Supporting instead of Leading.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterChris (the other one)

Happy for Cecily Strong. She should win for Judge Jeanine Pirro dipping into a box of wine.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered Commentershawshank

I knew Hamilton would dominate. Voters only watch a handful of shows, and that was definitely one of them.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterCash

Chris (the other one) --- I'd actually blame the LAFCA who started all the confusion by pretending it wasn't a tv project. as for Ramos getting the nod over Jackson... that's so silly and indicative of the way emmy voters are especially prone to just vote for the most famous people because i dont think it's possible to watch Hamilton and think Ramos is better than Jackson. His part isn't half as good for one!

Pam -- but they can't vote against category fraud like the members of the Oscars can. they are forced to vote where the person is campaigned by the ballots themselves from my understanding.

July 13, 2021 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Justice for Wickie Roy!! Girls5eva was such an unmitigated joy and so much of that was thanks to Renee Elise Goldsberry. The misses for her and for the show definitely hurt the most today. Also, including Pen15 but no nod for Maya Erskine? Shame.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterTimothy Lyons

There are so many really good shows on TV and streaming these days, but it's shameful that the Academy only seems to think the only good performances were in just a handful of shows. Why open it up to as many as eight nominees when fully half of those nominees are from one show?

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

I’m happy for Pose, Handmaiden, The Crown, The Mando and Wandavision but so disappointed for Zoey’s. So disappointed it’s over and so disappointed it only managed 1 (though for the usually fabo Bernadette Peters who I felt phoned it in a bit here). Emily in Paris? Blah…

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoanne

@nathaniel - ah. I know this is a cause you champion but there really should be some sort of rules re supporting vs lead. Then in this case, the producers knew that no way Hannah would win over Jean but would have a chance in Supporting.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Besides all the nominations for Hamilton and the Ethan Hawke snub, overall there aren't any real surprises this year. Hamilton really shouldn't be nominated at all. It's disappointing that so many great performances were skipped for a play.

I still think it should be six nominees per category or you'll get the same shows getting even more nominations like in the supporting categories. Max Minghella, really!? And Nick Mohammed!?

Disappointed that Wunmi Mosaku missed out.

Same with the men from In Treatment.

Emily In Paris. :o

Guest categories for comedy is also boring with all the Saturday Night Live nominations.

Love the five limited shows that got nominated.

Overall though I'm happy with the nominations and now really excited for the new season to begin with most of the shows returning back next season.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRod

I love the nomination for Aidy. She did such strong work in season 1 and brought layers to her character.

The crown love, too, feels deserved. This follows the trend of the show doing better in its second year of an era compared to its first. While I think the Emerald love is overkill, I’m glad so many actors from the show made it in.

Glad to see Blckish back. While not as zeitgeist as it once was, the performances are there and the show had quite a few great observations about this current moment.

I’m sad to see Girls5eva left off. Clearly there’s a limit to the academy’s embrace of new platforms. I do think Renee was hurt by the fact that she lent lead instead of supporting, but glad it got a second season.

Glad I was right about Erivo. She was catnip to voters. Happy to see Olsen here to. I do hope Wandavision leads to new perceptions about her ability to lead films. I think she has an outside shot to win. Voters who love to will be impressed by what she did.

I hope Jean Smart wins all the awards she’s nominated for!

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

Also, MJ Rodriguez’s inclusion is great. Her character has the most treacly material
And she sells it like few others. I’m also glad to see Billy and the series back. In spite of the naysayers, it had the right buzz and air date this year.

Very sad to see Ego Nwodim left out for SNL. She was superior to the ladies nominated for that show this year. Very happy to see Bowen in.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJoe G

I went back today and reread all the TFE pre-announcement analysis and predictions. How fortunate we are here to have such insightful, thoughtful commentary that allows us to discover programming we have overlooked and consider programs from a different perspective. Thank you contributors and commenters.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJames

Carl Clemons-Hopkins actually goes by they/them, so they're misgendered in the article.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDuncan

all this fluctuating numbers between categories is so absurd, how come Lead Actor and Actress in comedy have only 5 nominees and supporting have 8? it's insane, make a standard number for all the categories, it's not that hard.

also been saying this for a long time, but now it's so obvious that the Academy needs to do something with performers from Variety and Sketch specials, they way they keep snatching all the places for actors from scripted shows is insulting at this point, like, why bothering to submit and make all the campaign if in the end the cagtegory is gonna be full with SNL people? ridiculous that Guest Actor in a Comedy is 4/5 with SNL actors

and one note for Abe: Oslo actually got a nomination in Dramatic Score for Limited series, but yeah, get the point of the TV movie category being such a waste now

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered Commentereduardo

Some of these nominations are baffling (there should be none for Hamilton and Ethan Hawke should be there) but loved all the nods for I May Destroy You and Hugh Grant. Happy for Shrill, and Pose.
Thanks for the great predictions coverage.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered Commentermarshako

Hamilton is overrated, as a musical and as a movie.
No Marielle Heller?! No Donald Sutherland?! WTF
Delighted at the noms for Fennell and Grant though.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRama

Happy for WandaVision and Cobra Kai but no Small Axe? That's a diss.

I love Don Cheadle but I'm baffled by his nomination and I read that he too is like "huh?" He was only in it for 3 minutes and barely did anything other than have a conversation with one of the leads. That's a diss towards Carl Lumbly who only appeared in half of the show but was given a lot to do.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

happy for madeline brewer - janine deserves some rewards for all she's been through in giliead

disappointed that 'new york lonely boy' from girls5eva couldn't crack the song category

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterpar

Mj Rodriguez's nomination forgives a lot of sins from this year so I'm not too upset over anything really.

Now the real question... which is the hottest category? For me it's a toss up between Lead Actor in Drama and Supporting Actor in Mini/Movie.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

I don't believe this nominations at all. Not for a minute! I mean, supporting actress they pick a totally random black lady from Queen's Gambit over the mother? It happens in different categories. Someone is rearranging the nominees to boost diversity.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDhuram

Why does everyone hate Emily in Paris?

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterHermione

Fuck SNL

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterSelvaggia

Those of us who are Ethan Hawke fans have learned to live with the egregious awards snubs by now.

These are embarassing on the whole. The voters have an obvious bias toward anything that's popular (e.g., I love The Crown, but what did Emerald Fennell do on it this season that warranted an Emmy nomination?) and a preference for fluff over more difficult series like Small Axe and The Underground Railroad. I agree with Scott Feinberg's column today; it's time to bring back nominating committees.

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterjules

^What's wrong with SNL?

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMankin

Hamilton and SNL shouldn't be a part of these main categories IMO

July 13, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterTLove

I agree about Hamilton. I thought it was terrible.

July 14, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJustin

SNL - I say this from experience: only works when the president is a Republican.
When Trump left office, what many feared happened: the TV comedy lost a big theme. The Obama years were pure doldrums for them, so it will be with Biden. Trump had everyone spoiled.

July 14, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRafaello

The utter domination of SNL and Hamilton in acting categories is the worst error because SNL is a sketch show and Hamilton is a Broadway show. All the performers are deserving of trophies, but robbed deserving performers from other shows like Alex Newell and Kathleen Turner.

Favorite nominations other than Queen Jean Smart, which was expected, was Bo Burnham's jaw-dropping 6 nominations for his genius comedy special. Hopefully, he will have 6 trophies Emmy night--it's just that great.

July 14, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMike J.

Hawke missing out is utter bullshit. No need for both of the Hamilton guys to be there, and Halston was crap. Ugh, I'm still mad as hell after an entire day for Hawke!!!
