Florence Pugh starts filming "The Wonder"

by Nathaniel R

Today on Instagram, Florence Pugh shared the first image from The Wonder, a thriller from Chilean director Sebastián Lelio. Lelio, as you may recall, had a truly sensational three film run circa 2013-2017 with the marvelous character study Gloria, the Oscar-winning trans drama A Fantastic Woman, and the Jewish lesbian drama Disobedience. He interrupted that amazing run of originals by remaking his own international breakthrough film as Gloria Bell with Julianne Moore which was good if not as magical as the original. Now he's finally back to work...

Pugh writes:

We’ve been traipsing around the Irish hills for the last week and it’s truly been a magnificent start to a beautiful and exciting film. What a story to get our teeth stuck into, what a crew to be working alongside and a fantastic director Sebastian Lelio to be leading us!
This will be fun.

Since they've only been at work for a week this will surely be a 2022 picture. IMDb describes it as "A tale of two strangers who transform each other's lives, a psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil." In addition to Pugh, the cast includes Ciarán Hinds, Toby Jones, Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, and Brian F O'Byrne. We wish it weren't so generically titled (in the past nine years we've had films called To The Wonder, The Wonders, and Wonder) but what can you do.

Lelio supposedly has his next picture lined up already (even though they just started this one) and it will be headlined by that other Black Widow star, Scarlett Johansson. It's a sci-fi pic called Bride and sounds like some sort of a riff on the Frankenstein myth and themes.

Are you looking forward to these two pictures now that you know about them?

Don't forget Wonder Wheel...

Yeah, I want to see this.

2017 was the year of wonder:
- Wonder Woman
- Wonder Wheel
- Wonderstruck
- Wonder

No.

I wish he would keep working in Chile introducing us to amazing talents such as Paulina García and Daniela Vega.

I am very excited about Pugh emerging as the new actress of her generation. Truthfully, I had only seen her in Little Women but she blew me away. I next saw her in Black Widow and honestly wasn't expecting much but dang that woman is a star. Kevin Feige said that originally Yelena was going to be a one and done character in one movie but now she could join the entire franchise. I'm very impressed with her and hope her career continues to flourish.

Talking about films with generic titles that get us confused... how many films with the word "Boy" in the title have there been in the last 4 or 5 years?

Beautiful Boy
Boy Erased
Honey Boy
The Boys in the Band
The Boy Behind the Door
Millionaire's Boy Club
Hell Boy
Bad Boys for Life
Boy Meets Boy
Butt Boy

Every time a new film project is announced, it either goes to Florence or Anya Taylor-Joy. They're like Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone of the last decade and Cate and Kate of 2000s.

We all know that in 10 years Florence is going to get very fat, so she better work now.

Please delete the comment from Shashimi. So rude!

She really stole the movie from Scarlett Johansson. She did again in Little Women. Florence has a great future

I hope she will star in a movie with either: Glenn Close, Cate Blanchett, Emily Watson, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie

Working with Glenn Close might be a sign of career downfall, since most of her films are extremely mediocre and forgettable, and her fanbase are tasteless lunatic.

Thanks for describing the Kidmaniacs so accurately.

Looks like Kate Winslet in the picture.
