Atlanta Film Critics Circle loves the multiverse

The Atlanta Film Critics have announced their winners for the 2022 film year with Everything Everywhere All At Once the big takeaway with 3 prizes (Film, Director, Supporting Actor). They agreed with the venerable NYFCC on 3 of the 4 performance awards though it's far too soon into the season to know if we have "critical sweeps" on our hands with Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell, or Ke Huy Quan. BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once                    

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Janelle Monae, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery 

 She's second only to Daniel Craig in screen time in this ensemble comedy so between this and NYFCC's supporting award to leading lady Keke Palmer in Nope and Sunset Circle's supporting award to leading lady Carey Mulligan in She Said, critics groups are declaring war on smaller roles this year. At least so far. We'll see if this continues or if this is just a weird coincidence at the start of the season.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Claudio Miranda, Top Gun: Maverick        

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: Michael Giacchino, The Batman         

BEST STUNT WORK: Top Gun: Maverick                                      

BEST BREAKTHROUGH PERFORMER: Austin Butler, Elvis                   

BEST FIRST FEATURE FILM: Charlotte Wells,  Aftersun   

In short, a big FYC for Glass Onion,  expected praise for Everything Everywhere All At Once  (which everyone knew would do well in the critics portion of the season), and another notch in Top Gun Maverick's Best Cinematography belt. While the film is handsome looking and we've been predicting it in the category for awhile now, we can't say we expected critics to think of it as the best shot film of the year.

Quan is this year's Troy Kotsur. And I think EEAAO will win Best Picture. The fervor surrounding it reminds me of Parasite 's three years ago.

I'm trying to not get my hopes up w/r/t EEAAO and especially Quan, but things are looking good so far at least. The season is long though. Regardless of what happens, hope Quan's career can take off from here.

It is looking like Cate,Quan and Farrell will be the critics darlings.

If last year’s Oscar season reaffirmed anything, it’s that you really don’t want to be the frontrunner in December, so I would advise everyone here against getting their hopes up about anyone currently raking in critics prizes. Even Cate Blanchett, while certainly a lock for the nomination, is not even close to a sure thing for the win. She could win every critics’ prize there is, but if SAG chooses someone else then that alone will severely jeopardize her Oscar chances. Remember it’s about what the industry likes, not what the critics like.

Edwin : I agree with you 💯 but I have felt Quan was going to steamroll this season since at least September. His narrative is just too strong and he has the performance. Hopefully I will be wrong - not because I don't love his performance (I do) but because I love when the wealth is spread. My personal BSA choice would be Barry Keoghan.

Yes, yes, I know it's early BUT can you see anything besides EEOAO winning Best Picture? The Fabelmans didn't catch on (I can still see it take Director), and what else is there with that much passion behind it? Women Talking? Banshees? It does remind me of Parasite, it would be something that the critics, the public and awards voters can get behind and would make everyone happy.

I just watched EEAAO again this week. It makes me both laugh and cry. What was odd, was the first time I felt everything was going by so fast that I really had to pay attention, but this time, everything seemed at normal speed.

And for pity’s sake, nominate James Hong for an honorary Oscar while he is still alive.

Actor: Wasn't Fraser supposed to gobble up all the critics awards? Maybe Farrell will overtake him and end up winning.

Actress: Blanchett will probably get a majority of the critics awards. But she needs the televised awards- she gives great speeches and always brings it to the red carpet.

Supporting Actor: I hope Quan sweeps it all. He deserves it, has the narrative, and will give a great speech at the end.

Supporting Actress: I hope this is like actress 2020- where we don't know what will happen until the very end.
