Atlanta Film Critics Circle loves the multiverse

by Nathaniel R

The Atlanta Film Critics have announced their winners for the 2022 film year with Everything Everywhere All At Once the big takeaway with 3 prizes (Film, Director, Supporting Actor). They agreed with the venerable NYFCC on 3 of the 4 performance awards though it's far too soon into the season to know if we have "critical sweeps" on our hands with Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell, or Ke Huy Quan. The AFCC winners are after the jump...

"Bros" and Colman Domingo at the 35th annual Out on Film festival

by Nathaniel R

Shout out to any of our readers in Atlanta or thereabouts! Atlanta's premiere LGBTQ film festival Out on Film is kicking off its 35th anniversary edition on September 22nd with the Bily Eichner romantic comedy Bros as its opening night film. The festival closes on October 2nd with a movie about a double drag queen act Chrissy Judy. The festival's longtime director Jim Farmer has built it up for years into a must attend for LGBTQ films, a chance to showcase local filmmaking talent, AND an Oscar qualifying event...

Who will win the Emmy for Comedy and Drama Series?

By Spencer Coile

Happy Emmy Day, everyone! It’s been fun dissecting some of the major categories leading up to this fateful evening, where we will finally see who is awarded. Both the Comedy and Drama Series races are some of the most exciting in years. Seriously, it’s been eight years since something aside from Modern Family or Veep has won Best Comedy Series, so anything that wins this year will be a relief. So let’s speculate on who will take the top prizes of Emmy night...

Blueprints: Emmy Nominees for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series

Jorge has been taking a look at the Emmy history for this year’s writing nominees.

Let’s take a look at the four shows that made up the six nominees for Writing in a Comedy Series, the only writing category this year in which there were repeat nominations for the same show. Remember that, just as in the Directing categories, individual episodes are honored rather than overall series. For the fifth year in a row network shows were entirely shut out of the comedy writing category. (In fact network television was shut out of all three narrative writing category this year, only showing up in "Variety/Special"). Two newcomer shows and two established favorites got the comedy nominations; none of the shows have ever won for their writing.

Let's see the elevator pitches and the stats (we love a good round of statistics) after the jump...

TCA Awards: This is Us, The Handmaid's Tale, Atlanta...

The Television Critics Association have announced the winners of their 33rd annual awards at a ceremony hosted by Kristin Chenoweth. She sang, of course, but the surprise is that she pulled up Sterling K Brown for a duet. They sang "For Good" from Wicked! This is not a televised awards show but apparently his voice was good. That's a surprise to anyone who watched him "sing" in character on This is Us, the reveal there being that his character had no musical talent.

The TCA Awards don't do gendered acting* or supporting awards so there are only two acting winners a year. Congrats to Carrie Coon and Donald Glover for emerging as the lucky two. More winners after the jump...
