Emmy Category Analysis: Contemporary Costumes

by Cláudio Alves

Unlike at the Oscars, contemporary costume design is regularly recognized by the Emmys. That's what happens when you have over one hundred categories, including separate prizes for costumes, depending on the type of narrative. This specific award has only existed since 2015, and so far, no show has won it twice, making for a nice reprieve from the TV Academy's usual allergy to spreading the wealth. Indeed, none of this year's nominees is a previous victor, though half of them have competed before.

Usually, new programs have an advantage but never discount the power of a sweep – Schitt's Creek won on its second try as part of its final season's Emmy dominance. In other words, as with other categories, The White Lotus is well positioned to take home the gold…

Emmy Category Analysis: Is a 'Ted Lasso' Win Inevitable?

The Film Experience Team has been analyzing the major Emmy categories...

Of the eight Comedy Series nominees, this is the first nomination in this category for six shows.By: Christopher James

Is it really all sewn up for Ted Lasso? The charming comedy about an American football coach recruited to coach “football” (aka soccer) in the U.K. broke the record for most nominations by a freshman series. In total, it earned an astounding 20 nominations, including Series, Actor, two Supporting Actress slots, four Supporting Actor slots, three Directing slots and two Writing slots. Can anyone stop the eternally optimistic Ted Lasso?

There are seven other series that are hoping to put up a good fight. Realistically though, only two freshmen series pose an actual challenge (and no, I’m not referring to Emily in Paris). HBO Max’s Hacks and The Flight Attendant hope to pull off an upset. Will they be able to muster up enough votes? Let’s take a look at the nominees for Outstanding Comedy Series and find out...

Emmy Analysis: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

by Juan Carlos Ojano

Unlike other categories, Lead Actor in a Comedy Series has been a foregone conclusion even before nominations were announced. With Ted Lasso skyrocketing to the frontrunner status with 20 nominations, Jason Sudeikis is poised to take this as one of the easiest calls come Emmy night. Two of the nominees also came from Comedy Series nominees, but both are nowhere near Ted Lasso’s winning chances. Meanwhile, two of the nominees are sole representations of their shows - one in its first season, one in its last.

Without further ado, here are the nominees...

Emmy Analysis: Will "Pose" FINALLY win Outstanding Costumes?

by Cláudio Alves

We all have heard and discussed category fraud when applied to acting races, but the problem doesn't end there. Not at the Emmys, it doesn't. After two seasons competing as a period show, Pose is now up for the Outstanding Contemporary Costumes Emmy. Sure, the two-part episode submission is partially set in 1998, but that still involves the recreation of a gone-by historical milieu. Saying it's a contemporary-set drama would be like describing World War II movies from the late 60s as contemporaneous stories. Still, it's not difficult to understand the logic behind the move. Generally speaking, Contemporary Costumes is a less competitive category. If that's what it takes for Pose to finally win an overdue costuming Emmy, I can't say I'm too angry about it. But what about its competition? Let's examine the seven nominees…

Emmy Watch: Which Newcomer Will Win Best Comedy Actress?

Our team is breaking down the top contenders in all the major Emmy races and highlighting some of our favorites over the next few weeks. Today, we’re looking at Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

All hail the summer of Jean Smart!

By: Christopher James

The Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series race is going to get a shakeup. There are no previous winners who are eligible this year. Additionally, only one nominee from last year could return, as all other previous nominees are on hiatus or had their series end. Luckily, there are many buzzy new shows led by talented women who could fill this vacuum and make this once again a very competitive category. There’s also the potential for plenty of surprises from new streaming players and old network stalwarts.

So which new players can break in this year? Can shows that have been on for multiple seasons finally have a shot in this shortlist?
