What will & should win Best Comedy at the Emmys?

"If Veep wins I won’t complain. Really smart series that ended on a perfect note." - Lucky

"Russian Doll is probably the most affecting show I watched over the last year. It's brilliant and I love it - but as you say, its format and its tone is not at all friendly to it winning this. I" - ScottC

"Fleabag: Exhilarating, high wire stuff. Any episode is a masterclass of writing." -Arkaan

What will win Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys?

by Abe Fried-Tanzer

There are many factors that go into the way Emmy voters choose the winner of their top awards, and we’re taking a look today at where the Outstanding Drama Series contenders stand from a statistical and recent history perspective.

Better Call Saul (Season 4 – 9 nominations)
AMC’s prequel to the acclaimed Breaking Bad, is back for the fourth time after the show missed last season’s eligibility window. It matched its nomination total from season three, but has yet to win an Emmy in any category. Consider the inclusion of supporting actor Giancarlo Esposito and the exclusion of supporting actress Rhea Seehorn a draw. Star Bob Odenkirk may finally break through and win a lead acting trophy this year, but this show has so little buzz that it would be a shock to see it triumph.

Bodyguard (Season 1 – 2 nominations)
This six-episode freshman thriller scored a major breakthrough with a bid in this race. But it managed only one other nomination, for writing, and, puzzlingly, missed out on a nomination for lead actor Richard Madden, who took home the Golden Globe...

Do Emmy Submission Episodes Actually Matter?

With the Emmys fast approaching here's Abe Fried-Tanzer to ask a perennial question...

For the past twelve years, I’ve analyzed the Emmy episodes submitted by the nominees. Every summer, I screen as many of the episodes of shows I don’t regularly watch as I can, and review the selections of those I do. It’s a fun way to get to sample popular series that, for whatever season, aren’t on your watchlist, but the question is: do these submissions actually matter?

The idea behind them is a good one. Emmy voters can’t be expected to watch every nominated performer’s work in every nominated show, and requiring them to screen just a select few episodes is far more reasonable...

Team Experience: Happy, annoyed, and thirsty Emmy reactions

What's your favourite season, Catherine? We've already heard from Team Experience on the Emmy omissions that most pained them. Now that we've all had the opportunity to sleep on it, here are three final questions about the nominations for the 71st annual Emmys which will be held on.

1. Which Emmy nomination was your favourite?

2. Which Emmy nomination most confused / annoyed you?

3. What category is so sexy it made you quiver under your bodice?

Enjoy their brief answers and provide your own after the jump, won'cha...

Which Emmy nomination was your favourite?

CHRIS FEIL: Sian Clifford for Fleabag. With most folks predicting the also sensational Olivia Colman, I feared that the show might be more of a critical fave than an Emmy to earn multiple slots in one category. But I'm thrilled that Emmy agrees that Clifford's hilarious crisis is an essential ingredient to the show and an ultimately moving one as well. The way she throws away her monumental, restorative line "The only person I'd run through an airport for is you"? Perfection.

ABE FRIED-TANZER: Kumail Nanjiani for The Twilight Zone. The comedian perfectly encapsulates the tone of this anthology reboot and his nomination serves as the best summary of its balance of creepiness and wonder...

Top Ten: Which dramas have been nominated for the most acting Emmys?

Game of Thrones shocking showing at the Emmy nominations -- including 10 ACTING NOMINATIONS and 32 overall (a new record for overall in one single season beating NYPD Blue's previous mark) -- begs the question of how many shows the voting body actually watches on a regular basis. 32 nominations for a single shows seems more than a little excessive no matter how good a show is, given the hundreds of eligible competitors. Especially when it comes to acting.

So it made us curious. Is this normal and/or how abnormal is it? So we looked back through Emmy history which is not that easy to do -- the Emmys are actually much more like the Grammys than the Oscars in that they change their categories frequently and have 100s of them and it's harder to sift through their history analytically given that there's less accurate information compiled in any one place. To make this list simpler and also more far-ranging (wait-what?), we've devided this into the six drama series acting categories, rather than one collective list and we've also included how these lists are effected by the nominations this year. Hope you enjoy...

What's eligible for "Outstanding Main Title Design" at the Emmys this Year?

by Nathaniel R

105 shows, that's what. This is a peculiar obsession of ours because, apart from the handsome site Art of the Title, it gets precious little attention, interest, or coverage online. The awards aren't given out on air and sometimes they make terrible mistakes as to what's nominated or excluded (same as it ever was, in any category). Nevertheless we'd argue that title design is important, not just in the soulless connotations of "branding" but in its soulful counterpart "identity". A show's title sequence gives you just that (if it's good), setting the tone. We curse Netflix for letting you skip past opening titles if you're bingeing. To our way of thinking if you won't sit through the opening titles, you don't deserve the show...
