Oldest & Youngest Oscar nominees this year
46 days until the Oscars! You can now vote (daily) on every category on the Oscar charts as to who should win, so do it. Let your voice be heard.
We enjoy numbers and useless stats here at TFE so here is a little something on extremes to start your day, this year's oldest and youngest nominees (none of whom broke any Oscar-related age records that we know of, though). IMPORTANT CAVEAT ABOUT THIS LIST: Birthdates aren't available on many crafts people, producers, documentarians, and info is especially scarce when it comes to the shorts categories...
Oldest People Nominated This Year
- Dame Judi Dench, 87 (the second oldest Best Supporting Actress nominee of all time now, just five months younger than Gloria Stuart was for Titanic)
- Eric Roth, 76 (Adapted Screenplay, Dune)
- Roger Frappier, 76 (Best Picture, Power of the Dog)
- Van Morrison, 76 (Original Song, Belfast)
- Steven Spielberg, 75 (we recently celebrated. He's now the ninth oldest Best Director ever nominated. His career is so enduring that he is also in the "10 youngest directors ever nominated" list)
- Shawn Murphy, 73 (Sound, West Side Story. He won his Oscar for Jurassic Park)
- Jenny Beavan, 71 (Costume Design, Cruella. Who continues to be so badass. What will she wear to the Oscars this time? It'll be hard to top that biker jacket from her Mad Max Fury Road win)
(As far as we know everyone else is under 70)
Youngest People Nominated This Year
- Billie Eilish, 20 (Original Song, No Time To Die)
- Finneas O'Connell, 24 (Original Song, No Time To Die)
- Kodi Smit-McPhee, 25
- Ariana Debose, 31 (just turned!)
- Kristen Stewart, 31 (Best Actress)
- Jessie Buckley, 32
- Ben Proudfoot, 32 (Documentary Short, Queen of Basketball. This is the Canadian director's second consecutive nomination in the category. He was also up last year for A Concerto is a Conversation)
- Jesse Plemons, 33
- Germaine Franco, 34 (Original Score, Encanto)
(As far as we know everyone else is over 35.)
None of these nominees came close to breaking any age records though Kodi Smit-McPhee will be the second youngest winner of all time for Best Supporting Actor and Billie Eilish the second youngest winner of all time for Best Original Song IF they pull off those wins.
Do these lists make you feel like a baby or ancient? Forget about that. You're in your prime!

Wouldn’t Billie Eilish be the youngest winner of Best Original Song by several years?
If Billie Eilish wins, won't she become the current youngest person with an Oscar (as opposed to youngest person to have won an Oscar)? She would be surpassing H.E.R. from last year who is now 24. Finneas O'Connell would be second because he's about a month younger than H.E.R.
Jeff -- that sounds right, yes.
working stiff --that i have no idea! i'll have to do some research.
If Billie Eilish wins she would be the youngest winner by birthdate , taking the title from another singer, H.E.R. who won last year.
If Dench wins, she will be the oldest winner in her category, taking the title from Peggy Ashcroft from Passage to India.
Marketa Irglová was 19 (4 days away becoming 20) when she won for the song "Falling Slowly" from Once.
So Billie would become the Second youngest with 20y+3m
But... if Billie wins, would she be the first winner born in the 21th century?
If Smit-McPhee wins he will be the current youngest actor with an Oscar (currently Jennifer Lawrence; for men only it's Daniel Kaluuya).
If Smit-McPhee doesn't win, Ariana DeBose could take it if she wins. (Stewart and Buckley are both a few months older than Lawrence).
Smit-McPhee is remarkably the SIXTH actor born in 1996 with an Oscar nom, after Abigail Breslin, Hailee Steinfeld, Lucas Hedges, Florence Pugh, and Maria Bakalova. Only 4 other actors total born since 1992 have been nominated (Yalitza Aparicio, Saoirse Ronan, Timothee Chalamet, and Quvenzhane Wallis)
I misread TITANIC as "TITANE" and howled at the thought of Gloria Stuart taking part in that film! :-)

Thanks! When I was looking at that, I didn’t even bother to check Irglová‘s age because I assumed she was in her ‘20s at the time.
Go Billie!!!!
