A Golden Globe reunion at the Grammys: Teyana Taylor and Nikki Glaser

Did you watch the Grammy Awards last night? We did. Though it was no match for last year’s pop diva ecstasy –it’s tough to beat a year in which Charli XCX, Chappell Roan, and Doecii all provided jawdropping performances –  it still had a few noteworthy moments. Lady Gaga is, of course, always an event; it was a hoot to see Cher be both very present and absent-minded simultaneous, giving an excellent ups-and-downs of showbiz speech before wandering off without presenting her award. In fact Cher was so memorable in her goofiness around the envelopes that it was almost giving Elizabeth Taylor's "GLADIATOR!" and I love any of you who remember that.; Host Trevor Noah made the most out of Bad Bunny’s contractual obligation to NOT perform (due to the upcoming Superbowl) anything despite winning Album of the Year; and Lola Young (who I would have voted for her in heartbeat in Best New Artist) was “Messy” in the happiest imaginable way. Grammy Nominations: "brat" summer to continue through February 2nd

While we never do much coverage of the Grammys (they aren't the Oscars!) we do like to share a few details whenever nominations arrive. A few categories always overlap with things we love (film, tv, stage). And truth be told I've experienced a strange reinassance in terms of listening to new music this past year so I'm more interested than usual. Here are the  nominees for the top prizes at the 67th Grammys which will take place on February 2nd 2025. Trivia Collection for the 96th Academy Awards

Here's what we came up with as the dust settles from Oscar night. Let us know in the comments if there's any other interesting trivia bits you noticed from this season. 

PICTURE / DIRECTOR

• Oppenheimer is the third consecutive movie to be released before fall film festival season to win the Best Picture Oscar (after Coda and Everything Everywhere All At Once)... so perhaps distributors can learn to start trusting that movies can be released at any time and still factor into awards season? It's also the first movie to go straight to theaters (no festivals) to win Best Picture in ages (well, since The Departed in 2006)

• Three female-directed films Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, and Past Lives were nominated in Best Picture which is an all time record...

Review: Come on, "Barbie," let's go party!

What does it mean to sell out? Some would decry Greta Gerwig's move from mid-budget indies to big studio fare as a modern example. This line of thought posits the director's fourth film, Barbie, as capitulation to the tyranny of big bucks, no more than a glorified toy commercial for "vacuous, hypersexualized dolls." But when you're actually watching Gerwig's movie, it's difficult to take the pink oddity as proof evident of any sacrifice of vision or integrity for the sake of profit. Barbie's too ambitious a creation - in terms of text, tone, performance, audiovisual stylings galore - to support such dismissive readings.

From beginning to end, the summer's biggest comedy bursts at the seams with ideas, saturated with the clear intent of a creative mind given free rein. It glows with the kind of resources seldomly bestowed upon women directors. That doesn't mean the picture's perfect, exempt from criticism, or its enthusiasm is without drawbacks. But, even if Gerwig can't quite have her cake and eat it too, she manages to share a personal, goofy, deeply idiosyncratic proto-existentialist dream with her audience. Better yet, she does it with the attitude of a kid, their favorite toy in hand, eyes widening at the playtime possibilities before them…
