Oscar People at the Grammys - How'd They Fare?

by Nathaniel R

A Golden Globe reunion at the Grammys: Teyana Taylor and Nikki Glaser

Did you watch the Grammy Awards last night? We did. Though it was no match for last year’s pop diva ecstasy –it’s tough to beat a year in which Charli XCX, Chappell Roan, and Doecii all provided jawdropping performances –  it still had a few noteworthy moments. Lady Gaga is, of course, always an event; it was a hoot to see Cher be both very present and absent-minded simultaneous, giving an excellent ups-and-downs of showbiz speech before wandering off without presenting her award. In fact Cher was so memorable in her goofiness around the envelopes that it was almost giving Elizabeth Taylor's "GLADIATOR!" and I love any of you who remember that.; Host Trevor Noah made the most out of Bad Bunny’s contractual obligation to NOT perform (due to the upcoming Superbowl) anything despite winning Album of the Year; and Lola Young (who I would have voted for her in heartbeat in Best New Artist) was “Messy” in the happiest imaginable way. But for today’s post let’s look at how the various Oscar nominees fared during the Music Industry’s big night…

by Nathaniel R

Leonardo DiCaprio's debut film "CRITTERS 3"

Oscar Volley: Best Supporting Actress has a lot of wiggle room

The Oscar Volleys are back! Today, Cláudio Alves and Nathaniel Rogers discuss Best Supporting Actress...

Teyana Taylor is Nathaniel's frontrunner for ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER | © Warner Bros.

CLÁUDIO: It's that time of the year again, the beginning of the awards season proper, and all the punditry that comes with it. So, let's talk predictions. After all, it can't be reviews and festival coverage at The Film Experience all of the time. Because we're actressexuals at heart and lovers of actressing at the edges, it seems appropriate that the first of these volleys would be about Best Supporting Actress.

And let me tell you, having just returned from the London premiere of Wicked: For Good, still reeling from Diane Ladd's death, two thoughts are at the forefront of my mind. Ariana Grande is going to be a force to reckon with this season, as she sinks her teeth into an expanded and, in some ways, deepened version of Glinda. Nevertheless, it's hard to consider her case without thinking about what the late great Ladd was so adamant about fighting - CATEGORY FRAUD…

Review: P.T. Anderson's Glorious "One Battle After Another"

by Eric Blume

If you’re a regular site reader, you’ve probably been following all the film blogs discussing the new Paul Thomas Anderson epic, One Battle After Another.  So we don’t need to discuss plot or beat around the bush…the question is:  Does it really deliver like everyone has been saying? I remember being so excited before seeing Licorice Pizza -- it too was heralded by early viewers -- only to find it contrived and uninvolving in the cinema. My vote, this time, is an unqualified yes!  PTA is a great filmmaker:  ideologically ambitious, profoundly humanistic, and daringly assured technically.  Anderson delivers with depth and panache here in this new contemporary, highly political film...

Oscar Predix: Which actresses will receive their first Oscar nomination this coming season?

by Nathaniel R

Rose Byrne, Ayo Edebiri, and Renata Reinsve

We're almost done with the first round predictions for the Oscar charts. Today, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress and the question most prominent on our minds is which women will have "Oscar Nominee" after their names forever more? It's hard to tell this far out but we have some inkling of the possibilities...
