A spot of guessing game fun today. Some Oscar nominees are movie stars from the jump but most actors have to build their careers up slowly increasing the size and quality of their roles over the years until their awards breakthrough. 5 of our current 20 nominees across Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor kicked off their feature film career with a leading role. Can you guess who they were? Even more difficult can you pair each nominated actor with the name of their first credited feature film character? Consider Oscar Isaac in "The Card Counter"

Is it too early to start an “Oscar for Oscar” FYC campaign?  Because there needs to be one for Oscar Isaac in The Card Counter, stat.

Sadly, it’s not at all a given that he’ll get much traction.  Initial reception of The Card Counter among critics has been positive but rather muted, and the film hasn’t made much of a mark with general audiences.  It probably doesn’t help that the trailer gives the misleading impression of a snappy, heisty movie about a poker player with a shady past when in reality it’s a slow-burn Paul Schrader Dark Odyssey into the Mind of a Morally Tormented Man.  Schrader fans, at least, will get what they’re expecting; Isaac fans will get that and so much more...

9 random things that happened on this day, January 6th, in showbiz history

1938 In Old Chicago released in movie theaters. The 20th Century Fox Tyrone Power and Alice Faye drama was big at the box office and at the Oscars... its relevant at the moment because it competed for the 1937 Oscars even though it was released in January of 1938 (with no qualifying run in '37). Why? Well, that year had a longer than the calendar year eligibility period which is what we're going through right now again. Films released through February 2021 will be eligible for the Oscars honoring the films of 2020 this time around. We prefer the clean lines of the calendar year but you can't always (or even often) get what you want.

1943 Hitler's Children, an American propaganda film is released, depicting the brutalities of the Hitler Youth.  Bonita Granville co-starred...

Weekly Trivia

Hey folks. Michael Cusumano here. We had a great time at last week's trivia match and I though I would drop in and give you a sample. Last week we had rounds focused on Cate Blanchett and an audio round on Oscar nominated scores of the 2010's plus the general knowledge round we do every week. The round was one minute per question. Let me know how you would have done in the comments (No Googling. Duh.)

 Every winning team gets to choose a round topic for next week's match, and I'm pleased to report 5/21 champs TEAM PEACH chose LGBT Movies/characters/actors nominated for Oscars for this Thursday's game.

Happy half-century birthday today to the one and only Naomi Campbell. For those of you who were born in the 1990s or later you might have missed what a huge supernova deal models were to pop-culture in the late 1980s to late 1990s. Household name models had existed for some time before of course (Twiggy in the 60s / Paulina in the 80s, etcetera) but it was in the 1990s when the term "supermodel" was coined and when the models who could legitimately be called household names began to truly multiply. "Supermodels" infiltrated rock and roll (via a constant presence in music videos) and tranferred to movies and tv by becoming their own brands and trying their hand at acting... or merely playing themselves (often superbly) in fashion-related movies or documentaries.
