Split Decisions at the Critics Choice Awards

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER takes Best Picture. It's finally Paul Thomas Anderson's trophy time.

While Sinners led the nominations by a comfortable margin there wasn't a clear "favourite" to emerge at the the Critics Choice Awards this past Sunday night. Three films dominated with One Battle After Another taking Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay, Sinners winning Original Screenplay, Young Actor, Casting, and Score, and Frankenstein taking Supporting Actor (Jacob Elordi), Costume Design, Production Design, and Hair and Makeup. Three to four awards is nothing to complain about but they all lost some key races, too. As we move on to the Golden Globes (Sunday) and the SAG Awards it remains to be seen if any one film will become a threat for a mini-sweep at the Oscars, or if it will be more of a spread the wealth kind of year like this.

TIFF 50: "Hamnet" is Chloé Zhao's best film to date

Another year, another TIFF coverage extended far past the festival's end. When one watches as many films as I try to at such events, I guess this is inevitable. Getting sick just as I was about to leave Canada and cross the Atlantic back home didn't help matters, but I'm back on writing duties and ready to share my thoughts on a number of exciting new titles. NYFF, which I'll cover digitally, is still a week and change away, so that can serve as the deadline to wrap up this celebration of TIFF's 50th edition - Happy TIFFTY! 

So, let's begin again, starting with the drama that reduced the northern metropolis to tears and secured Chloé Zhao a place in history as the only director to have won the TIFF People's Choice Award twice. And it's well deserved, as Hamnet represents the filmmaker's finest achievement yet…

Almost There: Class of 2022

The Oscar nominations have been announced, and, while some celebrate, others commiserate. The word snub is getting its yearly workout, though it's easy to see why it's on the tip of everybody's tongue. This was a hard-to-predict year full of volatile lineups, not to mention a couple of dark horses crashing the party after most had considered them over. Grassroots campaigns won out while the precursors' importance keeps dwindling, and first-time nominees are more numerous than they've been in decades. Amid the chaos, it's time to fulfill an annual tradition here at The Film Experience, honoring those performances that probably came close to Oscar gold but missed the ballot at the last moment. Without further ado, let's give a warm welcome to the Almost There class of 2022…

Oscar Volley: the still bonkers-crowded Supporting Actress race

MARK:  Happiest season, to all who celebrate! I love a supporting actress smackdown, in real time, don’t you?This is a blood bath, to be sure, although one thing I’m fairly certain of: There will be someone from  Women Talking and  Everything Everywhere All at Once. At this point, I’d say Claire Foy and/or Jessie Buckley and Jamie Lee Curtis and/or Stephanie Hsu could even form the bulk of the lineup.  Curtis definitely is gunning for it—will she be the third veteran, overdue actress in as many years (after Amanda Seyfried and Kirsten Dunst) to find herself finally nominated in supporting?. If Everything Everywhere All At Once overperforms, that could augur well for Hsu. (Wouldn’t it be something if we got four actors in a single film nominated again this year after The Power of the Dog did it just last year?)

My hunch is we’re likely to see a majority of first-timers in this category, which is always exciting...
