"All the Beauty...", "Banshees of Inisherin" and "Bones and All" win big at Venice

by Nathaniel R

Cate Blanchett, Director Laura Poitras, and Colin Farrell all took home prizes

While The Whale and Don't Worry Darling hogged a lot of the press here in America, they weren't favourites of this year's Venice jury, both going home empty-handed. Julianne Moore presided over this year's jury which included Mariano Cohn, Leonardo Di Costanzo, Audrey Diwan (the Golden Lion winner last year -- our interview!), Leila Hatami, Kazuo Ishiguro and Rodrigo Sorogoyen. They gave the top prize to a buzzy documentary about Nan Goldin, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed. Though they didn't win the top prize both Martin McDonagh's The Banshees of Inisherin and Luca Guadagnino's Bones and All took home two prizes each...

I'm happy for Colin Farrell, Cate Blanchett, and Taylor Russell. They're great actors and deserve all of the praise. I'm glad some of the big awards went to women as I think I did see a short by Alice Diop this past summer and I liked it.

A big thank you to Elisa for her coverage. I feel like I'm well informed of some big contenders this season.

With Jackman, Fraser and Farrell all competing, it felt like a mini oscars preview, and it makes me happy that Farrell gets this feather in his cap.

I'm so glad it's over. Good coverage here in but Film Twitter has been unbearable discussing the same four Oscar movies over and over again. I thought festivals were the place to discover new voices!

P.S. Can someone please end with the stupidity of reporting the standing ovations?

Does this mean a bunch of think Pieces on how Cate can't win a third.

Does anyone know anything about possible contenders Regina King in Shirley Helen Mirren in Golda Glenda Jackson The Great Escaper Annette Bening in Nyad and Namii Ackie as Whitney.

Peggy Sue - lmaooo, your post-script amused me. I agree that reporting standing ovations is so silly. Tacky!
