Lists! Acting Nominees by the numbers

The Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor Charts are all updated with 'who should win' polls (vote daily) and trivia. Here's a silly little breakdown of "extra" numbers stuff from the four acting categories including a very "fiery" Zodiac coincidence.

Brendan Fraser in "The Whale"

ACTING NOMINEES BY THE NUMBERS...

1585  minutes, or 26.4 hours is how long it will take you to watch all of the nominated performances.

617 films made between them (give or take a dozen or two since some of them have appeared in films together which would reduce that number). That's an average of about 31 films each.

87 The oldest nominee is Judd Hirsch who is 87. He's the only Octogenerian nominated for acting this year

74 inches. At 6'2" each, Brian Tyree Henry and Brendan Fraser are the tallest nominees this year.

73 The only septugenarian nominated is Bill Nighy who is seventy-three.

60something This year's acting set is less ageist than usual. Brendan Gleeson, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Angela Bassett are all in their sixties!

61 SAG nominations between this set of Oscar nominees

50something Cate Blanchett, Brendan Fraser, and Ke Huy Quan are all in their fifties. Nearly half of the acting nominees are over the half-century mark this year!

58 Golden Globe nominations between these twenty Oscar nominees

40something Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, and Michelle Williams are all in their forties

42 BAFTA nominations between these twenty Oscar nominees

30something Austin Butler, Ana De Armas, Barry Keoghan, and Stephanie Hsu are all in their thirties. Which of them do you think will return to the Oscars soonest?

38 Critics Choice nominations between these twenty Oscar nominees

Paul Mescal in "Aftersun"

27 The youngest nominee is Paul Mescal who turned 27 days after his first nomination. Happy belated Mr Mescal

23 Primetime Emmy nominations between these twenty Oscar nominees.

17 Golden Globe wins between these twenty Oscar nominees.

16 of the twenty are first-time Oscar nominees which is extraordinarily rare.

13 Previous Oscar nominations for acting from this group: Hirsch in Ordinary People (1980) Bassett in What's Love Got to Do With It (1993) plus seven previous Blanchett nominations (1998-2015) & four previous Williams nominations (2005-2016)

12 films were nominated for acting Oscars this year with both Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once scoring a rare double-quad.

Angela Bassett is always on fire (gif from Waiting to Exhale, 1995)
10 Zodiac Fire Signs! A full half of the nominee is made up of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarian star signs. How about that? (Even crazier is the fact that, despite the fire dominance, all twelve star signs are represented among the 20 nominees) .

8 SAG wins: Cate (x 2) and Michelle have won solo prizes. And the other five prizes come via the "Outstanding Cast" categories so Angela Bassett, Blanchett (again), Brendan Fraser,  Andrea Riseborough, and Stephanie Hsu are also SAG winners.

8 Critics Choice wins

Barry Keoghan in "Eternals"

7 MCU cast members are nominated: Angela Bassett (Avengers Endgame, Black Panther, Black Panther Wakanda Forever), Kerry Condon (the voice of "F.R.I.D.A.Y." in Avengers Age of Ultron, Captain America Civil War, Spider-Man Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame) Cate Blanchett (Thor: Ragnarok), Brian Tyree Henry and Barry Keoghan (both in Eternals) and Michelle Yeoh & Stephanie Hsu (both in Shang-Chi)

7 BAFTA wins: Jamie Lee Curtis, Paul Mescal, Bill Nighy (x 2), and Cate Blanchett (x 3) have all won the British Oscar/Emmy equivalent.

7 of the twenty don't make it out of their movies alive. No spoilers!

5 Irish people: A full quarter of the nominees are Irish thanks to Paul Mescal and the Banshees cast!

5 LGBTQ+ characters in the mix, so a full quarter of the nominations this year (Blanchett, Curtis, Fraser, Hsu, Yeoh)

5 Tony Nominees: Cate Blanchett, Brian Tyree Henry, Judd Hirsch, Bill Nighy, and Michelle Williams have all been so honored for Broadway shows.

4 Emmy wins: Michelle Williams, Brendan Gleeson, and Judd Hirsch (x2) have each won Hollywood's biggest TV award.

4 Asian actors are nominated (or 20% of the lineup). This is an all time record. The previous high was 3 when Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), Steven Yeun and Youn Yuh-Jung (Minari) were all nominated (2020). The first time multiple Asian actors were nominated in the same year was back in 1957 when Sessue Hayawaki (Bridge on the River Kwai) and Miyoshi Umeki (Sayonara) were both up in respective supporting categories.

2 Tony Wins: Judd Hirsch has won two (I'm Not Rappaport in 1986 and Conversations with My Father in 1992)  but nobody else nominated for an acting Oscar this year is a Tony winner.

2 Former BAFTA Rising Star nominees: Barry Keoghan (2018), and Andrea Riseborough (2012) were both up for this public-vote nomination earlier in their careers though they lost (to Letitia Wright and Juno Temple, respectively). The only past winner of the prize to go on to an Oscar win (to date) is Daniel Kaluuya

1 Nepo Baby! Jamie Lee Curtis is the only acting nominee this year with celebrity parents

Mescal will be back for another six weeks in A Streetcar Named Desire because it's a significant hit. These additional six weeks (starting from the End of March) sold out in 2 hours.

Can we all agree Bassett is Oscar worthy in Waiting to Exhale.

Cal -- uff. I'm so sad i missed that announcement. Would have loved to hop over the pond to see that. but already sold out :(

There are SEVEN MCU actors in the mix as Michelle Yeoh and Stephanie Hsu were both in SHANG CHI.

As for which 30-something will get a 2nd nomination... not sure, probably Armas. BUT I think Paul Mescal will beat all of them.

Ryan T -- WHOOPS. thanks for the correction. how did i forget that?!

I would up the 2 LGBTQ+ character count by 2 (Mescal in Aftersun & Condon in Banshees…), but it isn’t a part of the text of those films, so I get it.

Barry Keoghan is turning into quite the character actor/scene stealer, I wouldn’t be surprised if he were the first of the 30-somethings to come back.

Interesting. You could watch all of this year’s movies with acting nominations in less time than it would take to watch Ke Huy Quan’s 1993 Taiwan television “drama” The Big Eunuch and the Little Carpenter. (About 29 hours if you skip all commercial breaks and opening/ending themes)

I accept Andrea Riseborough being apparently ageless, but for trivia purpose she is also in her forties, right?

February 8, 2023 | Registered CommenterAntônio

Kerry Condon is 40.

The 12 films nominated for acting Oscars is definitely on the lower range; the 1981 acting nominees remain the least dispersed, representing just 9 films.

Still the all-time leader for unique films nominated for acting Oscars is 2007 with 18 movies; aside from Michael Clayton's 3 nods (Clooney, Wilkinson, Swinton), all of the other acting nominees came from different films.

I'm not sure where the best place is to suggest this, but when you write up a How'd They Get Nominated? for Brian Tyree Henry, you should set aside a tiny percentage for when he presented Costume Design in the 2019 ceremony with Melissa McCarthy. It was a highlight of that telecast, and his willingness to be ridiculous endeared him to the Academy.

Reminds me of how Emma Stone presented Visual Effects with Ben Stiller in 2012 and got her first nomination a few years later.
