Poster and Clip from "Nyad"

by Nathaniel R

Netflix has released the poster and the first clip from Nyad, the true story of open water swimmer Diana Nyad's attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida at 60 years of age. The film is the first narrative feature from Oscar-winning documentarians Elisabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin and it's based on the memoir "Find a Way". The film hits theaters on October 20th for two weeks before landing on Netflix. As for myself, I'll see it on the big screen not just for the always amazing Annette Bening but also because the cinematographer is Oscar winner Claudio Miranda so maybe there are gorgeous images of the open water?

See the poster and the clip after the jump...

The following clip is basically introducing both the synopsis of the film and the two leads, Annette Bening as Diana Nyad and Jodie Foster as her friend/coach Bonnie Stoll. So it must be a moment from the first ten minutes.

Thoughts?

At first this felt a little flat to me but I readily acknowledge that I am usually underwhelmed by seeing random clips from films; Context is everything. I don't have much else to say other than that I really miss The Bening and I hope this is a big success for her (aka a fifth Oscar nomination).

Oh and also very randomly I played ping-pong just two days ago so I giggled at the setting because ping pong is not something I ever think about.

When was the last time you played ping pong? And when you did, did you also pitch a crazy idea to your friend/opponent/former love interest?

I thought this clip was quite unfortunate. That dialogue is so unbelievably clunky. Jodie is essentially saddled with the most blatant expositional text to work with. And visually so... bland?

Love Annette and Jodie so no doubt they will do their best, but this doesn't inspire much

TBH I can't get excited about this one at all despite the presence of Bening and Foster.

Yeah, I have a bad feeling about this one. Even the positive reviews sound awfully forgiving. The clip is rough.

Yeah, I am skeptical about this as well. Best Actress is stacked this year, and a lot of the contenders are in widely loved movies that will get nominations elsewhere - I just don’t think there will be room for this type of performance. Unless The Color Purple moves or is bad, I see Bening competing with Huller and Portman for a fifth spot, and that could prove challenging.

Yikes. Such an odd clip to promote - the dialogue is almost cringey. Was really hoping this would be Annette's moment. Here's hoping the rest of the film delivers.

One of my best sex experience is on a ping-pong table

For all I can see, this is not a trailer, it's a scene.
Extremely interesting, presenting the two characters.
I can't understand these negative comments.
Bening is back!

This is definitely unfair because it's just an isolated clip and an actor isn't obligated to mimic the real-life subject they're portraying, but there's something about Bening's (trademark) enunciation that doesn't seem suited to Diana Nyad...maybe they should've subbed in Pamela Adlon for a last-minute dub, Greystoke-style.

As a scene, not the least bit compelling or convincing.

Foster is not a stylist with dialogue, she needs great writing to be great. And this is not great writing. Bening’s doing her deadpan thing, nothing new—consider me skeptical about Nyad.
