Split Decisions at the Critics Choice Awards

ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER takes Best Picture. It's finally Paul Thomas Anderson's trophy time.
While Sinners led the nominations by a comfortable margin there wasn't a clear "favourite" to emerge at the the Critics Choice Awards this past Sunday night. Three films dominated with One Battle After Another taking Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay, Sinners winning Original Screenplay, Young Actor, Casting, and Score, and Frankenstein taking Supporting Actor (Jacob Elordi), Costume Design, Production Design, and Hair and Makeup. Three to four awards is nothing to complain about but they all lost some key races, too. As we move on to the Golden Globes (Sunday) and the SAG Awards it remains to be seen if any one film will become a threat for a mini-sweep at the Oscars, or if it will be more of a spread the wealth kind of year like this.

BEST PICTURE

The deflating support for Wicked is highly noticeable and leads me to believe it might have a rough showing on Oscar nomination morning. Jay Kelly always felt like a precursor placeholder for something with more passionate support as voters familiarized themselves with the contenders. (Unfortunately awards voters do wait for the last minute -- we'd be so much better off if they were all insatiable moviegoers year round!). That said I don't put too much stock in Sentimental Value or Bugonia winning nothing... funny how that works right? Perception is everything but it's also only in the eye of the beholder. All four have a strong (Sentimental Value) to decent shot (the other three) at Oscar's Best Picture list but surely at least one or two of them will fall away. But which of the following replace them: The Secret Agent, It Was Just An Accident, F1 or something much more surprising?

Timothee Chalamet is gaining momentum in the Oscar Best Actor race. It ALWAYS helps to be a major contender in successive years... it starts to feel like it's "your time" even if the voting bodies of awards shows wouldn't necessarily go there otherwise. But in the grand scheme of things Timothee is still awfully young for Oscar voters in their parallel but more exclusive lead male category. If he does win in March he'll be the second youngest winner ever.

Now that the televised awards have begun we assume that Jessie Buckley will prove a sweeper, even if Rose Byrne remains her only threat to "critical darling" status.

I'll be curious to see if Elordi can manage an Oscar nomination. On the one hand he's way too young and pretty for Oscar voters to take seriously but on the other hand he is buried in transformative 'de-glam' makeup (Actor division) and people sure do love Frankenstein and he is so much better than the movie housing him that it would make a lot of sense. As for wins, we still think Skarsgard is a major threat for the actual Oscar though. I personally voted for Del Toro as he's easily the most "actually supporting" performance in this lineup. My choice was made for me in that way but thankfully Del Toro also happens to be perfect / inspired in that movie.

In the arguably most surprising win of the night, Madigan triumphed over presumed Oscar frontrunner Teyana Taylor for her instantly iconic horror villain "Aunt Gladys" in Weapons. I voted for her but I definitely did not expect her to win and I still really worry that she could be the shameful snub on Oscar nomination morning. I suppose the real question is how well liked / connected she is to Oscar's acting branch members. Will they be eager to celebrate the comeback or forget to vote for her because they're only thinking about the Best Picture contenders? We've seen the latter happen before unfortunately.

This is not a knock against Caton but I hate that Critics Choice lets adults compete with children in this category because if feels so imbalanced. Plus whenever an adult is in the lineup they have an easy path to a win.

One of the weirdest things about awards is how auteurs can go years without winning anything and then suddenly win multiple prizes for a single film. We saw that happen last year when Sean Baker was buried in trophies. PTA could win three Oscars on a single night in March, despite being worthy many times previously.

This felt like a toss up between Sinners and One Battle but Francine Maisler is a very famous casting director (relatively speaking since people wouildn't recognize casting directors on the street) so that may have tipped the scale.

I deeply wish that I had actually loved Frankenstein because its dominance in my fav non-actress categories (The eye candy prizes) is going to depress me all season. Hamnet, The Fantastic Four, and Marty Supreme would all have made excellent worthier winners if you ask me.

I know there's a million categories and they have to pick and choose what makes the broadcast but seeing so many 'minor' categories awarded on the red carpet or not at all was so tacky.
Best Foreign Language Film is not a minor category! Best Cinematography is not a minor category!
I finally saw Frankenstein this past weekend and I did not get it at all. I was just so ready for the movie to be over. It just seemed muddy and boring, and, frankly, endless. The only real award I think it should get is Make-Up, assuming it's not all CGI.
I do appreciate spreading the awards around, though this looks to be a year of mini-sweeps possibly. Are the voters really only watching a handful of movies? You'd think they could at least squeeze in 25 or so.
Giving the award for Best Foreign Movie on the red carpet as a surprise is so tone-deaf and disrespectful.
Some comments:
- Picture, director and adapted going to OBAA. Solid winner. Don't mind.
- Sinners winning original screenplay is hilarious to me. Sentimental Value is right there.
- Timmy winning actor. Haven't seen Marty Supreme yet. I'm sure he's great in it. I just can't stand him and I can't respect anyone that dates a Kardashian. Sorry, just being honest.
- Jessie winning actress. Can't wait to see her performance. Love her. She was robbed for I'm Thinking of Ending Things, so this is right. If this had gone to Byrne I would've loved that, too.
- Elordi winning supporting actor. Ugh. Such a strong category and you give it to the worst one. That movie is terrible and in Elordi's favor, I can say he's REALLY working against that silly Beastly makeup. But no, just no.
- Madigan. Always happy when a horror performance is loved (and no, Frankenstein is not horror. Its genre is Slop.) Is she deserving? Not really. I mean, I've said this before: Sally Hawkins in Bring Her Back destroys her in terms of acting. That said, it's a fun choice.
The cinematography in Frankenstein is gruesome, I'm glad Train Dreams took this. I'm also in the camp that thinks the former is a bad movie.
Unlike you Nathaniel I'm pretty convinced Madigan is in and that she might actually win the whole thing. There doesn't seem to be an alternative, and even though Weapons is a silly movie, the Academy doesn't seem so allergic to horror as they once were.
Not that much to digest really.
Madigan winning is what she needed,if the Oscar win happens it'll be the coolest thing they've done for ages,where was Ed Harris,I think the Globe is hers too,Gladys is now part of horror culture and we know how rabid us horror fans can be,I am a huge horror fan and have numerous aquaintences who are and they also believe she is this years winner,I don't see them going for the SV ladies or Taylor and anyone else is happy to sit and clap for the winner.
Elordi I can't see them giving Oscars to 2 horror films and none of my horror club enjoyed Frankenstein bar Elordi's unique take on the character,I've no clue who is winning the Oscar but OBAA has to win 1 acting award so maybe it is Benicio winning a 2nd but it's very up in the air,i don't think it'll be Penn and am prepared for a Mescal snub in favour of a Lead coattail type nod Macy,Caton or Scott.two of whom are all very deserving.
Buckley She's winning the Bafta so the Oscar i'd say is hers,a tiny nailbiter if Byrne wins SAG but this was foregone ages ago and no-one has proved a great challenge bar Byrne but her film is her only chance,fingers still crossed for Chalfant.
Chalamet he's young but it can be his time esp coming off last years near win but if anyone else bar Benicio is winning for OBAA it's Leo,he's entered take him for granted territory and he's excellent in it,I can't see Hawke,Maura,Edgerton or the hopefully snubbed Jordan winning,my own winner this year is Dylan O'Brien for Twinless but he has no hope.
I'm not that interested in TV so i'll not comment except Adolesence is a grimy show that we get an abundence of here in the UK,don't understand the awards love for the young actor.
Anderson is a sealed deal.
Wicked will get craft nominations,Grande and Erivo will be justly snubbed cos it's not the bloody Emmys.
Train Dreams winning was a relief from the possible Frankenstein win,Train Dreams i think will do well come Oscar time.
Casting Correct choice despite Jordan,I am not a big fan of Sinners it's entertaining but Oscars gimme a break,but we haven't had a good vampire movie for a bit so i guess why people are all like "This is the greatest vampire film ever made" because they go along with the pack mentality and have seen very little vampire flicks,Nosferatu was superior to Sinners,fine film not scary and the best thing about it beside Mosaki is Jack O Connell and he's not getting the right kind of praise without a threat you have no film and he's a real threat from the moment he appears.
Kate Hudson is coming for that nomination! but hopefully not in that dress
Jay Kelly, Sentimental Value, Train Dreams, Paltrow, Scotts (Adam and Andrew) and Tillman just got slapped by SAG; Bugonia and Frankenstein got a lift!
I wish there was more hate towards Timothee rather than Michael B Jordan. But maybe that’s a different website. And Sinners is WAY MORE than a vampire movie, so I’m glad it is getting the attention it DESERVES.
Since my pick for Best Actor - Jonathan Majors - can’t get in obviously, then I’m MBJ all the way. Although Lee Byung-hun would be an amazing winner!!
I find it a really fun season. I enjoyed most of the major contenders and aside Frankenstein there isn’t any movie I really disliked. At the same time from PTA to Panahi I really couldn’t care less of these movies and hardly I would give one of them a rewatch.
Elordi is so good in Frankenstein and consequentially winning awards for that kind of performance is 100% Tropic Thunder realness.
I was a slight Buckley skeptic but she nailed the speech. Looking like a done deal.
Chalamet's unique: He's young, but I'd argue that CMBYN and Complete Unknown conferred the prestige of 1.5 Best Actor nominations each because they hit *so* hard in their respective years and were completely built around his performances, just like Marty Supreme. A bit different from a young leading man doing interesting work at the margins for years.
Not to mention miscellaneous other work that's gotten Globe/SAG/BAFTA/Spirt attention since 2017. Plus the enduring Best Picture heat Dune has generated.
So him being 0/2 (impressive itself) doesn't capture the full force of his Hollywood arc IMO.
@TonyL I find it very strange you want to hate an actor,is that comment based on anything.
I didn't like Jordan in Sinners,he was okI didn't find he executed the twin acting convincingly at all,he simply used clothes and that to me is a detriment to his role.
Dylan O'Brien in Twinless did it much better and maybe because I loved him in that I judged Jordan a little harsh but I don't think he deserves a nomination.
I don't see how Sinners is anything more than an entertaining vampire flick with music.
Personally, I consider Critics Choice a lesser award, not important and influential.
This said, extremely happy for Chalamet and Elordi.
On TV categories, totally crazy about "The Pitt", the best series of the year. LaNasa is brilliant (I still don't know how she was snubbed by the Globes and SAG today).
