The leaders of last weekend's box office in wide (Infinity War) and limited release (RBG) repeated this weekend. RBG is turning into a rather big player for indie distributor Magnolia. Magnolia releases lots of pictures but they usually don't crack two million as this new doc has in just two weekends. How big will it get? Only 11 of their releases have ever managed over $3 million theatrical (including TFE favorites Melancholia and I Am Love) but RBG looks likely to join them. Magnolia's all time biggest hit thus far was the Oscar nominated doc I Am Not Your Negro which managed $7 million theatrical last year...

Avengers Infinity War  is gigantic in just about every way and the audience responded in kind gifting it the biggest opening weekend of all time. Yes, even the super long awaited return of the Star Wars franchise The Force Awakens fell to Marvel Studio's magical gloved might... The studio is currently saying that Avengers beat the record by about $2 million dollars but Marvel tends to underestimate their opening weekends in a bit of a humble brag way so expect the margin to increase a bit.

A Quiet Place dominated the box office in its third weekend (it's added theaters each weekend despite opening very wide!). It's a genuine smash already earning back more than 10 times its budget in just three weeks time globally.  Super Troopers 2 and I Feel Pretty, two new wide release comedies, didn't fare as well though I Feel Pretty could prove to have legs given that word of mouth is much stronger than Schumer's previous film, the misfire Snatched, and the budget is reasonable, too...

Isle of Dogs Goes Wide.

What did you see this weekend? We'll skip the charts this week but let it be known that The Rock had another #1 opening weekend ($34 million for Rampage), horror hit A Quiet Place closed in on $100 million, and Isle of Dogs went wide in its 4th weekend and has a cumulative gross of $18 million. That means it's going to be about as succcessful as Fantastic Mr Fox and The Life Aquatic (i.e. his second tier successes) with his tier 1 biggest hits by a large margin being Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Moonrise Kingdom

I've been a bit sad that the inventive delights and storytelling nuances of Isle of Dogs aren't being discussed as thoroughly as the film's take on Japan...
