Category Analysis: Are Three Nominees a Charm for 'Ted Lasso' in Comedy Directing?

Apple TV+'s "Ted Lasso" earned three nominations for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series.

How do you beat a frontrunner? Ted Lasso submitted four episodes for directing and three of them earned nominations. The freshman Apple TV+ series is the odds on favorite across nearly all comedy categories. Yet, this category is prime for an upset. The last two times Veep had three directing nominees, they all lost. Granted, Modern Family prevailed in 2011 when it had three nominations in this category.

So who else is nominated? There are three other pilots in contention - B Positive, The Flight Attendant and Hacks. Past pilots that have won directing over the past decade include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Glee. Mom is also in contention for an episode from its eighth and final season. Emmy Analysis: A close race in Outstanding Writing for Limited Series or TV Movie

Unlike the Drama and Comedy writing categories at the Emmys, the Limited Series or TV Movie one can find entire seasons competing against solo episodes or single films. In the recent past, individual chapters of Sherlock and Black Mirror, classified as TV movies, won out against juggernaut series such as Fargo and Big Little Lies. This year, there are no such "movies" nominees. Indeed, despite six slots, only four series are recognized across the board. Wandavision is the nomination leader as well as the only show competing with single episodes instead of seasons. Indeed, with three nods, it thus becomes only the second limited series to score triple writing nods in the same year. The first one was American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson. That Ryan Murphy show won in 2016, despite the threat of vote splitting, and maybe the Disney+ program can do the same. Let's take a look at the nominees…

Emmy Analysis: Can "Ted Lasso" beat itself to Outstanding Comedy Writing?

Oustanding Writing in a Comedy Series has paired with the Comedy Series winner for the past three consecutive years even though a different show won each time (Mrs Maisel, Fleabag, Schitt's Creek). This was true even when the winning show had multiple writing nominations so it should have (theoretically) been splitting its vote. This suggests that the adorable and brilliant frontrunner Ted Lasso is going to win with ease... but which episode? WAIT, not so fast. Not long at all before that, Master of None and Louie both took this prize twice beating out their year's Comedy series winner (Veep and Modern Family). In the not-so distant case of Master of None vs Veep, Veep had multiple nominated episodes both times, theoretically splitting its own vote. This suggests Ted Lasso could also lose. But to what?

Will "Pose" win for its season finale, like "Friday Night Lights" and "The Americans" did?

Writers go on their own path at the Emmy Awards. Over the past ten years, writing has only matched up with Drama Series six out of ten times. There is plenty of room for this category to surprise and not line up with a clean sweep. With seven nominees, there is even more room for a shakeup. Our nomination leaders (The Crown, The Mandalorian, The Handmaid’s Tale) are all present, with The Mandalorian being the only show with two episodes. Meanwhile, Pose contends for its super-sized two hour series finale.

Category Analysis: Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series

With no recurring guest nominee present, this should have been an exciting crop. And yet, if I am being completely honest, it's hard to get excited. Two nominations for The Mandalorian but none for its best submission (Bill Burr)?  The best "guest actor" from The Crown was not even submitted (Tom Brooke). An Emmy favorite gets in for a show already cancelled by its network on its first season. Meanwhile, Don Cheadle gets in for a cameo in a Marvel series? These are the men in this year's crop of contenders for this category.
