Second Helpings. How Often Do You Have Them?

Ten years ago today Spider-Man 2 (2004) was released. I loved it so much that I went back the next day for seconds. This is not in my nature. This is so infrequent for me, in fact, that I can remember every single time it's happened. The othertimes being Queen Margot (1994) and Ladyhawke (1985) and, once on DVD if you want to count that, with Trouble in Paradise (1932). Because those four movies are so similar, what.

So I guess my next-day-rewatches are on the same timetable as Cher's #1 singles and Diane Keaton's Oscar nods arriving once per decade; We're due for another.

This still from Sam Raimi's awesome movie (still my choice for best superhero film) neatly sums up how I feel about the hateful reboot franchise which is just wasting so much money and talent (Andrew Garfield, who was supposed to be one of our great new actors, has literally been in nothing else since Social Network and it's been FOUR YEARS). In case you need help interpreting the photo the reboot is James Franco and he's trying to kill the best superhero. Greed ruins everything.

Anyway...

How often have you seen the same movie on consecutive days? I doubt I'll ever start doing this but I will probably end up seeing movies a second time more frequenty than I used to since MoviePass makes the money much less of an obstacle. I saw Snowpiercer today and may actually need to see it a second time to clarify my feelings.

Oh What a Night! What's on your cinematic mind?

What movie are you thinking about? Please do share. Summers never have the unifying film experience that winter does (i.e. the Oscars). So I have no idea what anyone is interested in.

What's on my mind? I need to see the second half of 22 Jump Street (long uninteresting story but I've only seen half of it) and I just got out out Clint Eastwood's Jersey Boys. More soon on that one though for now I'll just stay positive and say that I'm in love with Erich Bergen (who plays one of the members, the songwriter) and I thought I was going to be in love with Renée Marino (who plays Franki's wife) but we broke up before the end of the movie. Christopher Walken is wonderful but you'd know that even without seeing it I suppose.

Open Thread. What's On Your Cinematic Mind?

My day is jam-packed full: podcast recording, possible movie outing, Tony Awards and such so there's no time to write just yet. But this morning I kept thinking about Hattie McDaniel (random!) and how she must have had just one costume in her dressing room for years: the maid's uniform. We so need a biopic!

What's on your cinematic mind?

Participatory Madness

the "fix your face" banner is not long for this world. soon new themes will overtake it.Do I ask to much of you? A couple of days ago I was talking to Nick about what he was up to movie-wise and he was like "basically my life is controlled by Nathaniel this week." Ha! Between the podcasts and the Smackdowns and the theme weeks and the "Best Shots"... I guess I do like recommending bossing people around, cinematically!

But I've had strangely few takers for my proposed e-mail group for self-improvement and 'get back to the gym' co-misseration. I know that you're all beautiful and fit and need no makeovers or exercize prompts. But I do. Hence the roping in of other people to my 'how to get to the gym?' drama. if you want to hear how The Piano can help you in your workouts and other such cinematic/corporeal nonsense, join this experiment. I'm sending out the first lob on June 1st. If I ever write a self-help book, you can say you were there first.

And for those of you who are like 'SHUT UP. Work on the Oscar charts,' please know that that's actually what I'm doing right now as you're reading this.

Update and P.S. Here's how i know this fix yo'self moment was meant to be. Today I had a doctor's appointment just after posting this and I get to the office and who is on the cover of the sole magazine sitting on top of the checkout counter where I stood but Ms. Kidman!

Open Thread. What Movie Thing Makes Your Eyes Roll?

This week's banner theme was chosen by James T who won a recent 'say what' contest. He selected 'eye rolls'. I have no idea why he chose it but it's appropriate for today since I am feeling so over it (one of those days). It was hard to think up actors for the banner. My queen of cinematic eye-rolls is totally Noni Ryder but I couldn't find a pic. But nevermind all that.

What cinematic trope/cliché, actor, movie-anything makes your eyes roll every time? Groan away in the comments! Perhaps other readers share your pet peeves.
