100 Days until Oscar. Let's Talk Oscar's (Future) Centennial...

It's 100 days until Hollywood's High Holy Night but it's zero days until the HFPA, their bastard younger cousin starts voting. Balloting begins today for the 75th annual Golden Globe nominations. But today's magic number is 100.... so never mind about the HFPA. Let's talk about the future when we're all ten years older.

Meryl in old age makeup

Since this season is Oscar's 90th, we're ten years away from Oscar's centennial. Meryl Streep will be 78 years old by then but she seems like the only lock so far for the 2027 Oscar nominations. Tee hee! Out of curiosity how old is 78 for Oscar love? Quite old...

Seth Meyers as Golden Globes Host

Chris here. Looks like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is nailing down a host for the 75th Golden Globes ceremony and they are very much sticking within the late night host mold: Seth Meyers is closing in on the gig.

The move isn't a surprising one, but Meyers is perhaps a more palatable hosting options than last year's Jimmy Fallon or the Oscar's returning host Jimmy Kimmel. If nothing else this will bring Amy Poehler back to the Globes stage for their recurring "Really?" schtick, but even that notion underlines that these hosting gigs need some new blood. Shouldn't there be some prerequisite other than talk show hosting that makes a qualified host? Globes embrace television and films, but when will the film side be reflected in the host? Do the Globes even need a host?

The 75th Golden Globe Award nominations be announced on December 11 and will be awarded on January 7.

"Get Out" to Be Considered Comedy at Globes

Chris here. Is it time yet to start pondering the Golden Globes comedy field? One quick bit of potentially major news is that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has just officially designated Get Out to compete as a comedy. While this is probably music to team Get Out's ears, I'd argue that it's the appropriate choice - the film is sharp satire first, serious scares second to this viewer. But yes, this gives the film a major leg up to win a major trophy this season in a less competitive field.

This could also mean stronger chances for lead actor Daniel Kaluuya and possibly Allison Williams (who is strangely being campaigned as a lead) for Globes consideration as well. The stiffest competition will probably come from Lady Bird, but what other contenders should we be thinking about? Will The Disaster Artist register beyond James Franco's performance? Could hits like Girls Trip or Baby Driver land in the Best Picture Comedy lineup with less competition? Give us your 2017 Comedy thoughts in the comments!

75 days until Oscar nominations...

The upcoming Oscar ceremony is their 90th but guess who's having their 75th birthday this year? Oscar's bad seed step-sister The Golden Globes, that's who! We kid. We love the Globes, bad seed reference aside, in all their adorably flawed glory. What should we do to celebrate the Globes 75th birthday this year?!?

To honor their impending anniversary ceremony, here are 10 random times that the Globes were smarter than Oscar:

  • 2010 The Social Network, Best Picture (The King's Speech won the Oscar)
  • 2005 Brokeback Mountain, Best Picture (Crash won the Oscar)
  • 1996-1999 Their choices for Best Supporting Actor always preferrable to Oscars!
  • 1995 Sense & Sensibility, Best Picture (Braveheart won the Oscar)
  • 1984 Kim Basinger was nominated for The Natural instead of Glenn Close at the Oscars for the same movie (Close is a better actress, sure, but Basinger is way better in The Natural)
  • 1980s They recognized that Cher was a brilliant actress long before Oscar (three nominations and a win even before Moonstruck!)
  • 1967 Edith Evans, Best Actress for The Whisperers (Kate Hepburn won her second of four Oscars for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner)
  • 1962 Angela Lansbury, Best Supporting Actress The Manchurian Candidate (Category frauding Patty Duke took the Oscar for lovely work in The Miracle Worker)
  • 1960 Janet Leigh, Best Supporting Actress Psycho (Shirley Jones won the Oscar for Elmer Gantry)
  • 1959 Marilyn Monroe won the Comedy Best Actress Globe for Some Like It Hot (she was not Oscar nominated)

Can you think of any others?
