"Goddamned Asura" to represent Taiwan at the Oscars

We have our fourth contestant in the annual Oscar games for international cinema. If you missed the first three those were here.

๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ผ GODDAMNED ASURA
Taiwan (3 nominations, 1 win, and 2 additional finalists from 48 submissions)

The film is about a young man who orders a gun online and fires into a crowd on his 18th birthday. The film reportedly has an ambitious structure, shifting from virtual gaming to reality and following six different people who will be affected by the shooting. This film was inspired by a true story in 2014 which has inspired other films before this as well since gun violence is rare in Taiwan...

Oscar hopeful "The Falls" wins at the Golden Horse Awards

by Nathaniel R

Alyssia Chia and Gingle Wang arrive for "The Falls" -- will we also see them at the Oscars?

Chung Mong-hong's mother/daughter drama The Falls, which revolves around COVID-19 and mental illness, and is Taiwan's submission to the Oscars this year took home the top prize at the 58th annual Golden Horse Awards. But it was no sweeper. Chung Mong-hong, who had previously dominated the Golden Horse Awards just two seasons ago with A Sun (which went on to make Oscar's international finalist list), lost best director. Overall the wealth was spread with all of the Best Film nominees taking home statues. Chang Chen's latest star vehicle The Soul (streaming on Netflix) picked up four of them, tying The Falls haul.

The complete list of winners and gifs and photos from the event are after the jump...

Golden Horse 2021: The Soul, The Falls, and Drifting lead the nominations

THE FALLSby Nathaniel R

The nominations have been announced for Taiwan's annual Golden Horse Awards. Social drama Drifting about a homeless ex-con leads the pack with 12 nominations. Very close behind are the mother/daughter pandemic drama The Falls (which we reviewed at Venice) and the Chang Chen led mystery The Soul (streaming on Netflix) with 11 nominations each. Moneyboys, the gay hustler drama that premiered at Cannes this summer snagged just two nominations but big ones (Best Actor for Kai Ko and Best New Director for C.B. Yi).

The actual winner doesn't often translate into being Taiwan's Oscar submission (The Assasin and A Sun are the only winners of the past ten years to be sent to the Oscars) though the submission is often among the nominees. UPDATE 10/06 That's true again this year as The Falls has just been selected for the Oscar competition.

The complete list of nominations and a lot more photos after the jump...

Golden Horse Awards 2020: Gay dramas abound but a romantic comedy takes it.

by Nathaniel R

Oops. We missed sharing Taipei's Golden Horse Awards this year as they happened right before Thanksgiving and we were otherwise occupied! Past lineups have had films from Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and more competing for the top prize. For the past two years, however, due to political tension and a boycott from China we're seeing less of that and it's becoming more centered on Taiwanese movies. This year three gay dramas well (one of them arrives on Netflix soon) but it was a romantic comedy that won...

Golden Horse Nominations for 2019

by Nathaniel R

A lonely student and his teacher become friendly in "Wet Season"

Usually the Golden Horse nominations are a fun and glamorous mix of all the hot movies and movie stars from various Chinese language countries. This year, however, due to political fallout from a speech last year and a Chinese boycott because of increasing tension between the way China sees Taiwan and the way Taiwan sees itself, no films from Mainland China are competing (which takes out a huge chunk of movies and a lot of the most famous movie stars). So the bulk of the features nominated this year are features from Taiwan with a little Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong thrown in. UPDATED WITH THE WINNERS MARKED BY STARS

BEST NARRATIVE FEATURE

You may have noticed that Taiwan's current Oscar submission Dear Ex  (streaming on Netflix) is not nominated here. That's because it was a major nominee last year at these same awards. Curiously Singapore's current Oscar submission A Land Imagined (streaming on Netflix) was not nominated in Best Feature at the Golden Horse Awards. It had to settle for a few craft nominations...
