Borat and Wanda Maximoff lead the MTV Movie & TV Award Noms

The hits just keep on coming. This very strange and elongated awards season just keeps adding chapters and sidebars that aren't usually there because it's lasted so long. Hell, if Broadway had reopened by this point we'd also have Tony campaigning happening during Oscar campaigning (Speaking of which, why did they announce Tony Award nominations five whole months ago if they weren't going to name winners or schedule a date to do so? Strange.). Anyway, here's something diametically opposed to the Tony Awards and sometimes the Oscars: the MTV Movie and TV Award Nominations.  As usual though this is a fan vote awards show so it's literally the popularity contest that all awards shows sort of are, only more nakedly so! Borat Subsequent Moviefilm an Judas and the Black Messiah lead the movies in nominations while WandaVision, Emily In Paris, and RuPaul’s Drag Race lead in the television shows but at the MTV Awards, moveis and TVs share several categories like "Best Hero", "Best Fight" and "Best Kiss" and the like.

The complete list is after the jump (NOW UPDATED WITH WINNERS AS OF 05/17). That Carey Mulligan and Maria Bakalova's are both nominated is fun but doesn't instill confidence that they'll be able to pull off upsets at the Oscars...

Soundtracking: Southland Tales

by Chris Feil

Recently resurfacing with repertory runs of its original catastrophic Cannes cut, Richard Kelly’s notorious Donnie Darko follow-up Southland Tales plays like the most bizarre time capsule. It captures not only a specific ideological moment in the timeline of post-9/11 anti-Bush anxieties, but it also captures the aura of MTV in its dying days as a culturally dominant force. For the uninitiated: imagine a Nashville porn parody peppered with internet conspiracy theories and set to the Pixies, then edited for television. It doesn’t all work by a long shot but it’s kind of awe-inspiringly out there, and at its best when it realized that it’s really meant to be an opera.

Great Moments in Kissing: "The Notebook"

Team Experience was asked to share their favourite screen kisses for Valentine's Day. Here's a longtime actress friend of TFE, new contributor Kim Rogers...

When Nathaniel put out the call for favorite movie kisses, my mind immediately went to The Notebook’s iconic kiss in the rain. The movie is full of great kisses, but the entire movie is building towards the scene where Noah and Allie kiss in the rain. There’s a reason it’s on the poster, y’all.

The entire lake adventure is tinged with a bittersweet sense of melancholy as Noah takes a now engaged Allie out to see a flock of swans that have taken up residence on his lake. Allie is every bit the proper woman her mother always wanted her to be with her perfect hair, red lipstick, and string of pearls. Allie and Noah have a loaded conversation about the swans (“They’ll go back to where they came from”) and they observe the differences in each other after seven years apart...

Showbiz History: Intolerance, Pee Wee, and Nightcrawler

9 random things that happened on this day, September 5th, in showbiz history...

1847 Outlaw Jesse James is born. 160 years later he'll be assassinated by Oscar nominated "supporting" actor Casey Affleck on the big screen.

1914 Stellar makeup artist Stuart Freeborn born in Leystone, London. You can thank him for the iconic looks of the original Star Wars trilogy (hello Chewbacca and Yoda) and the original Superman quadrilogy, and Peter Sellers transformations in Dr. Strangelove. He also worked on classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Murder on the Orient Express. He was never Oscar nominated so how did he not even get an Honorary Oscar?
