Supersized "Nomadland"... what will Searchlight do for a follow up?

by Nathaniel R

Click for the full illustrated new poster

The prolongued 2020 Oscar season is going to make 2021 weird, isn't it. Take Nomadland, for instance, which is just a smidge over HALFWAY through its long trek to Oscar night after its September bow). Hopefully the Biden Administration can figure out a way to speed up vaccine distribution and we can all get back to our favourite pasttime -- MOVIEGOING -- by summer 2021 when the new stuff starts arriving. Alas, that's too late to enjoy Nomadland on IMAX screens, beginning January 29th, which frankly sounds like heaven to us after watching it on a bad streaming link with a watermark across it.

Though Nomadland is not my #1 film of the year -- top ten list coming in a few days! -- there isn't a single film from 2020 that I'd rather see on the most gigantic screen possible. Joshua James Richards' cinematography and the beautifully aged resilient face of Frances McDormand deserve it.

After Nomadland's Oscar run, whether or not it wins the biggest prize in Hollywood, here's what Searchlight (now owned by Disney) will be releasing in 2021...

"Respect" moving to summer 2021

R-E-S-P-E-C-T the release date chaos, since you have no other choice! The movie calendar has been in serious chaos since March and it will continue to be so until there's a vaccine. There has always been an element of uncertainty surrounding release dates, even in the before times, but we've never before had uncertainty about when EVERY movie might arrive before. Unprecedented times we live in. Anyway, Respect, the Aretha Franklin biopic, is moving to August 2021. Maybe theaters will be open by then? This takes Jennifer Hudson out of the Oscar race (at least until the 94th Oscars in 2022) so we've had to adjust the Best Actress chart yet again.

Strange timing though since just last week she was on the cover of Entertainment Weekly promoting the movie (which is a much more normal 3 month out promotional window but now that press was 10 months early!)

The Oscar Race Plot Keeps Thickening... or is it Thinning?

by Nathaniel R

For those of you who are wondering why the Oscar charts are still not updated, here's a simple fact. Every time I go to work on them, something huge changes and I have to start over. I'm fully aware that other pundits keep making breathless pronouncements of what will actually WIN the Oscars but I just can't do that. We STILL have no real sense of what will actually open since Hollywood keeps clearing and resetting the chess board. The latest upheaval is that West Side Story, Steven Spielberg's remake of the Oscar-winning classic that didn't need to be remade, has moved back an entire year to December 2021. So now both of the big latinx musicals that were originally intended for 2020 have just essentially scrawled a one over the final zero on their original calendars with The Heights in summer 2021 and West Side Story for Christmas 2021...

Bradley Cooper entering PT Anderson's world

by Nathaniel R

We were wondering when we'd get casting news for Paul Thomas Anderson's next film and it's finally starting to trickle in. Though the untitled movie revoles around a famous teenage actor attending high school in the San Fernando Valley in the 1970s (yes, we're thrilled that PTA is returning to Boogie Nights time and locale) the buzz is that it's actually an ensemble piece. And there are supposedly at least three prominent adult roles. Bradley Cooper is in talks for one of them but we don't know which. The juiciest adult roles are rumored to be a film director, an agressive agent, and a closeted politician.

Cooper is one of the best actors of his generation so we can't wait to see what Anderson can pull from him since the auteur is just amazing with  actors...

Oscars Delayed Until April 2021

Note: This article was written on a very crappy personal day and readers have complained that it is too petulant and that we have larger fish to fry right now (which is very much true). But this is a film/Oscars site so we couldn't not to discuss it. Nevertheless, we will try to keep a wider perspective next time we're upset with AMPAS. That chance will surely come again since to know the Oscars is a perpetual rollercoaster of elation and disappointment. -Nathaniel R

Swift on the heels of great Academy news, we get terrible news. The Oscars will not take place in February 28th as previously announced but will be pushed back two months to April 25th, 2021. (The nominations will be announced on March 15th, 2021 which means our April Foolish predictions now have an excuse for how long they're taking to finish) This also means they're pushing back the opening of the Academy Museum again. Now that will open in late April 2021 to coincide with the presumed Oscar afterglow...
