Who wouldn't want a 10 year college reunion in their rich friend's new mansion?I love a good Big Chill type set-up.

Yes, I do love the actual 1983 movie The Big Chill. However, the hit film has itself spawned an entire genre of movies and TV. How many movies have you seen where an attractive ensemble of longtime friends spend a weekend away and come to terms with central truths within the friendship. There’s always as many laughs as there are tears. The uptight people finally get drunk or stoned and loosen up. Party animals gain new depth. A collection of the greatest hits of decades past are played throughout, usually with an accompanying singalong. I eat all of it up, no matter how predictable it may be.

One of the finer entries in the genre is Kenneth Branagh’s 1992 film Peter’s Friends. It’s more than just the English re-telling of The Big Chill. The film is simultaneously a pricklier and warmer examination of what friends do and don’t tell each other...

"Wicked" Movie announces its Elphaba and Glinda casting! What about the other roles?

After years of fan-casting and online speculation we finally know who will be following in Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth's footsteps in that Emerald City of stage and screen legend. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will be taking on the iconic roles of Glinda and Elphaba in the big screen adaptation of Broadway behemoth Wicked which is, if you've been sleeping under a rock, about the witches before the events of The Wizard of Oz. The news was announced tonight by the film's director Jon M Chu.

Dune: Top 10 Best Costumes

Dune feels more like a period movie than a sci-fi extravaganza as fashioned by costume designers Jacqueline West and Bob Morgan. West, who studied Art History, has described the aesthetic she and Morgan conceived as "mod-ieval, looking to the past for the distant future." While the story takes us to a faraway tomorrow, the world doesn't look new. Instead, it feels ancient, used-up before we ever laid eyes on it, sand-blasted but not rotten like the Lynch movie. Stuck in feudalistic pageantry and a political system that squashes the individual under imperial rule, Dune is an anachronism expanded to the monumentality of a space opera. An incredibly ambitious project, the movie deserves applause for its scale and, indeed, its costumes. 

Even the most negligible extra in the background of scenes is splendidly dressed, their ensembles as thought-through as the hero costumes. With that in mind, I decided to highlight this sartorial glory by re-watching the flick ins search of its best looks, be they worn by movie stars or background actors. There's so much to admire…

Doc Corner: 'Attica'

“Attica! Attica!”

The memory of the Attica Correctional Facility revolt has lingered throughout pop culture. Whether it was on the periphery of Best Picture nominee Dog Day Afternoon, inspiring a season-long story arc on Orange is the New Black, or as the direct subject of literature like Heather Ann Thompson’s acclaimed Blood in the Water, and in movies across cinema and TV. For our purposes, there have already been several documentaries about it, perhaps most notably Cinda Firestone’s 1974 doc Attica and Brad Lichtenstein’s Ghosts of Attica from 2001.

If you have seen all of these then it may feel like there isn’t much to say on the subject that dates back to September 9–13, 1971. And having only watched Firestone’s incredible and matter-of-fact feature some time last year (while unaware of a new titles being in the works), I did certainly remember many of this sorry saga’s painful and tragic moments. However, director Stanley Nelson and co-director Traci Curry have their own wealth of story to tell that makes for frequently fascinating storytelling...
