Congratulations to the Movie-ish Grammy Nominees !
Given that roughly 193,026 musicians can call themselves Grammy nominees for the first time or again in the wake of last night's announcement (so many categories), we'd like to congratulate those nominees that are somehow connected to the movies. But before we do that, tell me who has your vote for "album of the year"?
I have the Gaga and Adele CDs and love both. Do you recommend the others?
Anyway... Silver screen type nominees & best music videos after the jump
Including: Val Kilmer, Patton Oswalt, Daniel Radcliffe and more...
COMEDY ALBUM:
Patton Oswalt, who is currently looking strong for a Supporting Actor nomination for Young Adult is a hominee for "Finest Hour". His competition includes Weird Al's "Alpocalypse", Louis CK's "Hilarious", Kathy Griffin's latest and The Lonely Island's "Turtleneck & Chain"
BEST SHORT FORM MUSIC VIDEO
(I include these because they are short films)
"Rolling in the Deep" - Adele
"Yes I Know" -Memory
"All is Not Lost" - OK GO
"Lotus Flower" - Radiohead
"First of the Year" -
"Perform This Way" - Weird Al
Very strange to see a Weird Al Gaga parody nominated but not a Lady Gaga video of any kind?
MUSICAL THEATER ALBUM:
Three nominees this year. "Anything Goes" has the great Sutton Foster and Oscar winner Joel Grey (Cabaret) as its main attractions, Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe is on the "How to Succeed Without Really Trying" cast album and the likely winner will be "The Book of Mormon" because it wins everything.
SPOKEN WORD ALBUM:
Often you get movie stars in this category but this year the closest thing to that is Val Kilmer who did full cast radio drama of "The Mark of Zorro". He's up against two female awards magnets Tina Fey with "Bossypants" and Betty White's "If You Ask Me (And Of Course You Won't)". So perhaps he'll need to shred ballots with Mr Pointy to win.
And the actual movie categories follow in full...
• "Glee: The Music, Volume 4" - (Glee Cast)
The big question here is whether or not we'll see the Diane Warren Justin Beiber number, the Zooey Deschanel song or the Footloose track among the Best Original Song nominees at this year's Oscars? What'cha think?
WHO ARE YOU ROOTING FOR AT THE GRAMMYS THIS YEAR?

Wasn't Christina some kind of producer for the soundtrack? And co-wrote many of the songs. That may be why she gets the nomination. Just my guess.
Go Burlesque! And Tron!
Great recap. Two more movie-related nominees:
Steve Martin is up for Best Bluegrass Album
Michael Rapaport is up for Best Long Form Music Video for directing the Tribe Called Quest doc
The Grammys are one enormous popularity contest =/. They don't care about true artists, they only nominate the entertainers with the most sales and publicity, and 30?% of the time these mainstream performers are actually worthy. Although this list isn't bad, Adele's album was good, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga are pops best performers, and Loud is Rihannas best album. But the album of the year for me was Angles by the Strokes, one of the greatest modern bands, and it didn't even receive a single nomination. The day the Academy gets to be as bad as the Grammy's is the day I give up on award shows all together.
im looking forward for adele and kanye to rule the show, 21 and My beautiful dark twisted Fantasy are masterpieces on their own but it would be nice to see the awards go to those who deserve them, its nice that Bon Iver got nominates on multiple categories. For shrt video form>First of the year from Skrillex is an excellent disturbing video but it will not win so im happy if either Ok Go or Radiohead win because their videos are also incredibly original. As for soundtrack im crossing my finger for true blood to win, every episode had me googling a new song..amazing! As for score I am also baffled of the social network snub I hope mansell takes it or daft punk but good for Desplat on the double nom. As for original song Im not fond of any of the nominees for movies per se but I do like Christmastime is killing us from family guy...its very funny as well...
I'm real surprised to see My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy not nominate for Album of the Year. Period before the announcement, I even thought that it was the only sure lock, and 21 came close to that. Last year Grammy award was really a shock for me. Sometimes really have no clues who the Grammy rooting for.
lol Betty White as a Grammy nominee! :-) And Kathy Griffin goes 3 for 3 in the comedy nominations the past 3 years... I hate Nikki Minaj being in the Best New Artist cat... she's been around for awhile!
My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is considered by many critics to be at the top of the best Hip-hop albums ever, so it missing out on Album of the Year, especially to Mars and Rihanna, is the biggest snub I can remember. Not trying to sound douchey and hyperbolic but listening to it is really more like listening to movements of a symphony rather than just randomly put together songs on a album.
Other: "Circuitral" by My Morning Jacket. A MA ZING.
Kanye not getting in for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is inexcusable. Born This Way is way too bloated and inconsistent to be up there, but at least it has good moments and isn't total mediocrity that Doo-Wops and Hooligans is by Bruno Mars. Haven't listened to the entirety of the Foo Fighters and Rihanna albums to comment. At least Song of the Year is an incredible line-up, barring Bruno Mars again.
Here's hoping Kanye, Adele, Bon Iver, and Mumford & Sons all get good hardware!
The Social Network: I thought the score was phenomenal to hear paired with the film's images and performances, but I can't quite see enjoying it that much if ripped away from the film. If they were just listening to the discs and not contextualizing how the music works in the film, I can wholeheartedly see why The Social Network would be snubbed.
volvagia -- you may well be right.
everyone -- i guess i have to listen to this twisted fantasy (i haven't heard it)
The Weird Al video is a better Lady Gaga video than Lady Gaga has put out in quite some time. That's the reason for the nomination.
And I'll just throw this out there: Trey Parker is an Oscar away from the EGOT now. There's now way The Book of Mormon loses Musical Theater Album. Are we going to have to wait for the film adaptation of that show for him to get an EGOT for writing?
Adele should win, hands down.
Like many of you, I really feel Kanye West was snubbed for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy; not only is it his best album by far, it was also on the most critic's lists for album of the year, including The Village Voice, where it won in the largest margin in the history of the publication. To be fair however, it was released more than a calendar year ago and is most likely not fresh in the minds of the people who vote for these things (not like they would vote for the worthy artists anyway, but I digress).
very very pleasantly surprised to see rihanna's LOUD in the album of the year lineup. her album is definitely her best to date and is very good
Well, maybe it's too DARK and TWISTED for Grammy's taste.
I'm happy "Tangled" was nominated. I wonder if that "Various Artists" for it means that Mandy Moore is (finally!) a Grammy-nominee. They've really overlooked her wonderful previous two albums (07's "Wild Hope" & 09's "Amanda Leigh").
As for the rest of the AOTY nominees, Rihanna's "Loud" is an OK album to check out, while I haven't heard Foo Fighter's album. Bruno Mars' "Doo-Wops and Hooligans" has some great album tracks ("Marry You" & "Talking To The Moon") but like Rihanna, it's just an OK album.
Three albums that I wished had a shot at being nominated for this year were Vanessa Carlton's mesmerizing "Rabbits On The Run," Fefe Dobson's fierce "Joy" and Robyn's "Body Talk, Pt 3" EP (since the full length wasn't submitted). At least Robyn got 2 nods in the Dance categories.
of course kanye not getting a nom for album of the year for MBDTF is ridiculous, so is pj harvey's snub for let england shake. superb record! it won the mercury music prize yet received zero grammy noms.
who are these turkeys?
Don't even get me started on The Grammys...I lost my love for them last night (I love the movies and film awards, but I'm just as addicted to music and the Grammys!).
I own 21 and Born This Way. And I have all of the songs from Loud.
21 is a masterpiece.
BTW is good, and has stunning moments, but is a bit bloated, and no where near as strong as The Fame Monster (my favorite album ever).
Rihanna being nominated for AOTY is a joke...when she popped up, my brain didn't even know how to respond. That album is not the kind of album that gets nominated in that category, Rihanna's not that kind of artist, she doesn't write her music. Loud was a filler album; simply filled with radio hits. That's all. Even Rihanna fans agree it's probably her worst album. I enjoy that album for what it is, but AOTY worthy it is not.
Random other rants:
- Adele better slay (and I'm pretty sure she will). She should win everything she's up for.
- I hope Nicki wins Best New Artist though Bon Iver will be stiff competition.
- My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy not getting nominated for AOTY while Loud does? That's literally a joke. And Foo Fighters was random.
- Beyonce's album '4' is an AMAZING album; she didn't get a nomination for Best R&B Album?! Is the world real? She honestly deserved an AOTY nomination, but a R&B album nod should've been a no-brainer. Wtf.
- And all these rule changes, like with the dance category (which is so dumb, basically pop stars who make dance music will never be nominated - it’s discriminatory and stupid), and no gender division in vocal categories just make me so angry.
I hope they get their shit together by giving Adele everything and then having real nominees again next year.
-Well, I found the 2 categories "Best Rock Performance" and "Best Rock Song' are stupid and overlap, as all the nominees from the first are also nominated for the latter.
-Those who deserved to win and those actually win the Grammy are always different. I honestly will not surprise if they'd go for Rihanna, Bruno Mars and the like instead of Adele. I have no issues with Lady Gaga and Foo Fighters as they already nominate for AOTY before.
-Still don't understand the snub for Kanye West's MBDTF. A pity for Beyonce's 4, and not so surprised again with the snub of PJ Harvey 'Let England Shake" (although I think this is 1 of the best album of this year).
-Can't really judge the Grammy though because I think they understand the quality of music more than any of us, but I do sometimes feel "they're unpredictable because they're too predictable"
