Scouting New York Fun/creepy. Take a retro tour of American Psycho's New York City landmarks.
Pajiba Speaking of Christian Bale. The web is abuzz with all those Dark Knight Rises on set photos now that filming has commenced. I agree with Iggy on Tom Hardy's lipless "Bane" look, however true to character it may be. Iggy wrote...

Hardy. Better with lips.

it must be a cinematic crime hiring Hardy, the most lusciuous male lips, and make him wear that thing. Could this be considered playing against type?

Geekscape Since Batman is in the air, why not a ranking of all filmed Catwomen? I find it hilarious that Anne Hathaway is included in this six-wide field since she hasn't even purred yet. Who knows how good she will or won't be? The Pfeiffer write up is insightful.
Twitch Superhero fatigue has not yet set in. Commissioned scripts for Ant Man and Doctor Strange have been turned in to Marvel Studios.

Twitch Forbes Highest Paid Actors list: Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio are up top but the list is soooo 1990s as if nothing ever changes in Hollywood.

La Daily Musto Hello Gorgeous. Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under) will star in the revival of Funny Girl. I'm stunned and happy. Here's a video making the rounds of her doing the famous closing number "My Man"

It's such an interesting choice because it clearly signifies that the producers are NOT trying to duplicate Barbra. Which is, I think most people of sound minds would admit, the only sane way to approach reviving such an iconic connected-to-one-legend piece of theater.

Finally, mark your calendars for August 31st. Gonzo 80s 'classic' Scarface will be showing at 500 screens nationwide to celebrate an epic Blu-Ray release. I'm not wild about the movie which is so widely embraced by gangstas who love its excess unironically and ignore its cautionary tale finale. But if you've never seen it you'd be crazy to miss the chance to see Michelle Pfeiffer's first great performance on the big screen. That year's supporting actress nominees can kiss her skinny pampered ass. Imagine that arguably star-making backless dress / elevator descent entrance on the big screen! Al Pacino's ambitious criminal is hypnotized and so were movie audiences, rescuing La Pfeiffer from her then status as 'Grease 2 girl'. If her entrance isn't enough imagine those 80s dance moves, or the huge-ass sunglasses. Chase those Pfeiffer visuals with mounds and mounds of coke snorting and utter icy contempt for everyone in her field of vision... including herself. She's mesmerizing. Oh and, yeah, some people would describe the movie that way, too.

Fanny Brice was a show business star, and she rose to that level uncharacteristically. She wasn’t an acting type that would succeed by anyone’s imagination, or any Entertainment Industry system…not then…not now, either. To play an actress and singer whose individual qualities, and cultural moxie, created an American theatre and radio ...

Lauren Ambrose can sing?! Amazing, another reason to like her.

Brava, Lauren! Even doing a sort of period version of "My Man," she seems utterly contemporary. And boo on the loss of Tom Hardy's lips. I'll withhold judgement on the film itself, but his mask looks like a Mohawked version of Hannibal Lecter's.

Scarface: A daring satire trashed in mainstream perception by widespread acceptance of it by people who have habitually proved they have little to no sense of satire. Also: Perceived through the window of what got changed from original to remake I don't take the cautionary message as "crime doesn't pay" but as, roughly, "crime shouldn't show off."

Lea Michele is probably huddled in a corner weeping right now.

One of the things I love about Pfeiffer's Catwoman is that she seems to believe she really has lost her soul and that everything except/including the desired revenge is completely pointless.
Crazy but also bored!

Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman is the reason why Batman Returns should be required viewing for any women's or gender studies course. The ending of the picture is really upsetting. All the male figures in the film with the exception of Alfred and little boys -- The Penguin, Max and Batman, and in no way know how to accept a woman breaking free from what's expected of her to remian mouse like -- just as if she were still a little girl.

I don't know how to say this but I would vote for Michelle over Emma's peerless work in Howard's End, and Tomei should've never been nominated, if we have to play that genre work goes into the supporting category.

So glad someone spoke up for michelle in scarface her dinner table scene is classic pfeiffer.

I like these pictures of Bane but it's annoying that some folks are so determined to spoil this next Batman movie. A year is not such a long time to wait...why ruin the experience?

She certainly can sing...its a shame her acting is so atrocious lately, at least on Torchwood...good lord...

August 2, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKyle

I agree with NoNo. I prefer official picture from the studio rather than this leaked pics to build excitement. Now we’re counting days before someone takes a pic of Anne Hathaway shooting with her catwoman suit.

Kyle -- i'm holding out hope. I haven't watched the new Torchwood yet but she was great on stage in romeo & Juliet a few years back. Maybe she's just one of those actors that only shines with the right material?

August 3, 2011 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Aw, Lauren! I see her so rarely that I'm always so shocked and surprised she's still out there somewhere. She needs to be more in my life. But then, my life is not on a stage like hers apparently always is.

Love the Scarface write-up about The Pfeiffe. Her whole wardrobe in that film just elevated her stunningness-ness.

Re: Dark Knight Rises - the buzz doesn't bother me too much (it's a quality series and I actually am pretty excited for it in general) but all these day-by-day updates are only gonna deflate the actual excitement once the first official trailer comes out around early spring/late winter. And that's still a couple seasons away. Sucks for the hardcore fans but they'll learn their lesson. Especially if it's deemed an unworthy last chapter by the end. We, here, know not to follow every single detail because then where's the mystery of the adventure? Keep up the non-stan-ing, Nate!

Lauren Ambrose in complicating the quasi-competition between her and Alison Pill. I missed Lauren from Six Feet Under and didn't see the movie she was in with Frank Langella. One day, I will fix this.

August 3, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPaolo

Lauren really needs to correct her singing posture!

Nathaniel - It can and does happen...wasn't aware you watched Torchwood. It's been pretty dissapointing so far, not Russell Davies at his best, and John Barrowman has lost alot of screen time to the far less interesting new characters. Here's hoping for a second half improvement, but I sense serious story telling decompression with 10 episodes.
