FYC BFCA

'Critics Choice' Ballots are due today at 3 PM EST and I challenge my BFCA brethren and sisters to squeeze in one more screener / screening before sending off their ballots. I'll unfortunately have to send mine off without having screened Django Unchained (which I'm seeing as ballots are due) but I did not choose to have the flu this last weekend of voting when it finally started screening.

FYC #1 - Nicole Kidman in The Paperboy. Nicole Kidman is 5'11" and wears massive heels but even seated, squatting or horizontal this performance towers over most of the Supporting Actress Field
FYC#2 - Michael Fassbender in Prometheus. He's not being talked up in the Best Supporting Actor race because Oscar taste in acting doesn't ever stretch to androids but you can vote for him in the Best Actor in an Action Movie acting race. FWIW he's on both of those ballots for me because I won't be constrained by Oscar buzz; I'm voting "best" not "most likely to be nominated".
FYC #3 - Remember that the Young Actor (Under 21) prize has more viable contenders than just Hushpuppy from Beasts of the Southern Wild. Also age-relevant and therefor eligible: Logan Lerman & Ezra Miller from The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Tom Holland from The Impossible, Elle & Alice from Ginger & Rosa and the kids from Moonrise Kingdom. This has the potential to be an amazing category if voters don't get lazy.
FYC #4 -Weep that they don't televise half the categories because that makes them essentially useless as critical causes go (unless you count fine print on fyc ads) but vote strong anyway: Holy Motors, Les Misérables and Lincoln for Best Makeup!

I had been just browsing in some places and got you just read this post. I must say that were inside hand of luck today otherwise getting such an excellent post to learn wouldn't have been achievable for me, at least. Really appreciate your content.

Amen! If only all awards voters showed some more outside the box thinking, then maybe these things wouldn't be so damn predictable.

Nathaniel, will you ever be releasing your CC ballot to us? Or are there rules against it? I'd love to see your top choices!

Jonny -- i haven't read the bylaws abotu showing ballots but i prefer not to as it spoils what little suspense there is left for the film bitch awards in January :)

Oh right! Didn't even cross my mind. Looking forward to those as usual:)

I look forward to the Film Bitch awards far more than I do the Oscars. So I can't wait for that. :)

It would make me inexplicably happy to see Kidman get even the most minuscule awards attention for what is an undeniably great performance. It's not overhype, or fanboyism, she just gives a incredibly raw performance - plain and simple. To be honest though, with Stoker, The Railway Man and likely Grace out next year, plus leftover goodwill from this year if she's not nominated, it'll be something of a banner year for her that I could imagine will garner her major awards attention.

Pierce Gagnon for Looper in the Under-21 category as well! (What a stacked line-up.)

Kidman's best hope is the Golden Globes and I hope her campaign was intelligent enough to know Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical is her category—not Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

Out of curiosity, why are you eligible to vote with "Broadcast" Film Critics? Wouldn't you be, more accurately, a New York film critic online?

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMike in Canada

3rtful

Did you see the movie?

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

No. But the Globes need slots to fill and Supp Actress is too competitive this year with possible nominees.

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

ACTING SHOULD NOT DEPEND ON "SLOTS TO FILL" ... THERE IS TOO MUCH CATEGORY FRAUD AS IT IS!

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

Acting doesn't depend on filling slots. Category fraud non-existent problem. People want to awards and need nominations—only egomaniacs prefer to be campaigned exclusively in the lead category (Streep).

Nathaniel, when is gonna be up your Kidman interview?

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

Mike in Canada -- i am most accurately a New york film blogger but NYFCO rejected me but the BFCA, which is more thankfully more important -- academy screenings and everything -- did not so there you are. we have no control over such things so we just enjoy the windows opened and try not to be hurt by the door slams (yes, I've been rejected for other things too)

BFCA does accept bloggers who aren't on television but you have to have a fairly substantial audience to qualify.

Sorry I responded to you ... will never do it again in the future.... you are a bit daft....

December 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

That's interesting. Too bad about NYFCO. Looking at their choices today they could probably use a guy like you. :)

Yes to Fassbender in PROMETHEUS!

There should be a huge push for him as in my mind, many of the supporting performances this year are great, TYPICAL work from actors rather than a truly different, unique performance!

He should be in contention for Best Supporting Actor!

My ears perk up whenever anyone mentions "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." My favorite movie this year, and no one's really talking about it.
