Red Carpet Lineup: Oscar Beauties, 86th Edition
We're almost done! Only 35 more Oscar posts before w--- No for reals though we have to talk about fashion at least briefly. There sure was a lot of granny froufrou beading fussy texture on trend this year, huh? Which works on some people but not everyone. And weirdly it doesn't work at first and then totally works by the end of the evenin on some people. By some people I mean the happy Blue Jasmine twosome, whose gowns worked really well once you saw them all snuggly together in their seats.
SUPPORTING LADIES FIRST
I think Julia Roberts should've gone younger/sexier to combat the visual drabness of the Barbara role in August and because Jennifer Lawrence, red hot, has already stolen her Sweetheart crown (in fairness Julia abdicated the throne after her Oscar win so no one really took it from her). Sally Hawkins! (Why do I feel like her bohemian signature characters Ginger & Poppy both would not approve of what their creator is wearing?) I was going to do a poll of best dressed but I figured Lupita Nyong'o would get 100% of the votes making it the most boring poll of all time. I know this is June Squibb's favorite Christmas Party Dress getting a surprise airing in March.
BEST ACTRESS - AKA FOUR OF THE MOST POWERFUL WOMEN IN THE BIZ
Judi Dench never shows. Do you think she watches overseas?
Amy Adams has never looked better and that dress was so tight that visual effects were employed to show her jumping up to dance with Pharrell in it. Because: impossible. Meryl Streep with a little off the shoulder glam. But white blouses are risky when you're eating pizza. Cate Blanchett looking like an ethereal elf quee... hey, wait a minute. And Sandra Bullock also looking sensational. The Best Actress shortlist did the red carpet proud.
But which among them wins your "best" votes. Tough call. right?

Cate's is growing on me so i'll say hers but none of these comes close to Lupita's Golden Globe cape deal. That was the best dress of the ENTIRE awards season!
lupita!!!
although funny how more than half these ladies looked way, wayyyy better at the Golden Globes. especially amy and julia
Isn't Amy only 5 times? Or are we already anticipating BIG EYES?
Sandra all the way. 10's across the board.
1. Lupita
2. Cate
3. Jennifer
the rest were like, ‘we have no shot in hell at winning so, fu*k it’
the hell was julia thinking?!?
lupita
CATE !!!!!!!
I would say that Judi hasn't watched a show in years.
Supporting: Jennifer and Lupita looked sensational. I didn't like Julia at all. Sally is too tiny to wear that kind of dress. It doesn't even work with Cate!
Lead: Sandra, Amy and Meryl looked gorgeous. In that order.
poor amy. first lupita outdoes her cap look at the globe than sandra steals her color at the oscars
I think June Squibb looks great. She wisely chose a color that is very becoming and an age appropriate style being neither young nor slender her choices were limited and she looks very classy.
Of the other supporting ladies:
That has got to be the ugliest dress I have ever seen Julia Roberts wear. It looks like something your Great Aunt Tillie would wear to serve punch to her guests, all that's missing is a crocheted shawl. Sorry Sally Hawkins dress is wearing her not the other way around. There's about a half a dress worth of material too much. JLaw's is good but would have been better without those hip ruffles. Lupita's is lovely.
Of the leading ladies Sandra Bullock's is by far the best, her overall look was the most pulled together too. Cate's is a great color for her and in a photo it looks good but it didn't move very well. Meryl's suits her without being a knockout. Adams looks very glamorous but I wasn't overly impressed with her look.
Blanchett looked as if she were taking over Hollywood that night. Flesh color and seashells -- who dares question the new mother superior? Yes by the end I was smitten by the audacity of a dress that would be total failure with someone else.
Nyong'o is serving ingenue realness -- a pure princess in Tiffany blue. The orchestral had the nerve to quote her with a send off from Willy Wonka! I love that cue I might add because it makes me think of Willy Wonka.
I liked but didn't love Lupita's dress. The color is glorious against her skin tone, but I am not a fan of the deep v-neck on her. Too much sternum.
Sally Hawkins has a distinctive sense of style. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I find it charmingly conservative. Hair and makeup are great.
June Squibb looks fantastic. Tadashi Shoji always does right by women over 40 who don't wear a size zero.
Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Roberts do nothing for me.
As far as the leading ladies go, Cate Blanchett is glorious. I think Amy and Sandra look better than ever, and Meryl looks nice, too.
Sandra's dress is everything. Adore Cate and Jennifer's picks. Lupita's is pretty but nowhere near the highlight of the season for her. (Her best blue look has to be one of the best red carpet looks in years.)
I'm all about Cate's dress. She absolutely looks like she owns the world in it. When I first saw Lupita's I was a little disappointed considering her jaw-dropping Globes dress but I love it now. Gorgeous color.
Cate, Cate, and Cate. Sandra. Lupita. June.
June Squibb's my favorite, followed by Lupita Nyong'o. It's the power of color and someone very comfortable and confident in what they're wearing.
Lupita wins. Amy a close second. So simple and elegant.
I liked Amy A and Jenny Law. I'm an old school gay and I like my plunging necklines to come with some boobage, so Lupita was just OK for me. (Don't get new boobs, LN'.)
Hawkins and Roberts should have been turned away at the door. (That should be a new Oscar tradition - worst dressed can't come in and is mocked during the ceremony.)
hey, no dissing dame judi; she was in india shooting 2 exotic 2 marigold
"never"? she's been there five out of seven times
Judi Dench didn't show b/c she was busy in India, on the set of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2. She's a great dame and a classy dresser...just saying.
Julia def shoulda gone the sexy route. Sally Hawkins would look stunning if the dress felt less like draps wearing her. Jennifer Lawrence looks great, I just don't like her hair like this. Lupita was best dressed by far, though. Such a stunning fashionista.
As for Best Actress, Amy and Meryl are boring me with looks I feel I've already seen from them before (but they look good, of course). Cate and Sandra are so stunning. Cate's dress is way more interesting and stunning tho.
I thought Jennifer looked better at the Vanity Fair party in that short Tom Ford. I also thought Sandra Bullock and Amy Adams looked great.
"...Judi Dench never shows. Do you think she watches overseas..."
What kind of statement is that? Judi Dench attended all of her first 5 Oscar ceremonies. She missed out in 2006 because of knee surgery, and didn't attend this year because, at 79, she was filming in India and the trip to and from would have been a bit much.
The trashing of Judi continues. And I think June Squibb looked lovely. Ageism, again.
CATE. That dress will be a classic.
Amy and Sandy looked fabulash.
Does J.Law ever *not* wear strapless?
Have any co-stars ever seemed more enraptured with one another, platonically, than Cate and Sally? It's lovely to behold.
Mareko, love them together off and on screen. Cate and Sally need to star together again. In an Alexander Payne movie.
All I could think of all night when they showed Bullock was that she must have her own lighting crew constantly surrounding her. Her skin was glowing and she looked wonderful. Cate and Sally looked great, but I think the same-i-ness of their dresses made them each stand out a bit less. and I love that Meryl was able to pull off an elegant outfit that was totally outside of the 'fancy gown' aesthetic.
Lupita. tho. So elegant.
Had to go with Cate the Great Blanchett. She never really dresses to be sexy. She always takes risks no matter what and it was quite a fashion statement.
I didn't love Lupita and Cate's dresses as soon as I saw them on the red carpet, but the color of Lupita was fantastic and it photographs EXTREMELY well, especially when in mid-motion while Cate's dress looked 100x better with the Oscar.
Don't have much to say about the other supporting ladies, but the leading ladies? THEY ALL BROUGHT IT. Can't get enough of Amy, Sandra, and Meryl. The latter especially looked so polished and just the right of glam that works for her.
1. Amy - never looked better. Bombshell.
2. Cate - best hair she's ever had.
3. Lupita - amazing as always, but is it just me or was this her worst dress of the season?
Well, I'd never thought I'd actually say it, but Sandra Bullock really wore the best dress of the leading Ladies. It really wows me: the color, the shape... perfection.
They were all fabulous in their ways, though. Amy looked wonderful, Cate was the winner of the night anyway (though I'm not that much of a fan of her dress) and even Meryl looked more elegant than in 2009 and 2010.
As for the supporting Ladies.... Lupita would get my vote. What can I say? I love Blue....
though the red dress of Jennifer Lawrence is very close and strangely enough June Squibb looked adorable in green.
Among the nominees, I rank Lupita first, with Bullock second (which surprised me, I mostly consider her looks misfires), and Blanchett barely edging Amy Adams for third spot. Quite frankly, considering only the dress itself, I probably like Adam's best, but the way Blanchett carried herself, her hair/make-up, her poise and winning attitude make me put her ahead.
Overall, the Best Actress line-up should be proud, all ladies looking great! Supporting Actress, not so much! Lupita brought it, J-Law looked pretty, even if simple (she has a great body, she can manage those simple red dresses, either this year or that scorching red number she had in the 2010 Oscars), Squibb was adorable, but Hawkins dressed far too old and Roberts missed the mark completely.
Luptia for sure of the nominated actresses. I was wishing she would twirl that dress all the way to the pressroom.
