Quickies

THR People's Choice Winners which are always hilarious ugh: Robert Downey Jr as Favorite Dramatic Actor. For what, The Judge?
Tom & Lorenzo judge the People's Choice red carpet quite harshly
Rotten Tomatoes Golden Tomatoes (limited release): Best reviewed are Selma - movie, Life Itself - doc, and Gloria -foreign film.
Rotten Tomatoes Golden Tomatoes (wide): Best reviewed are 1) Boyhood 2) The LEGO Movie 3) Nightcrawler. Huh. Not sure I would've predicted that threesome but i guess they make total sense
The Atlantic Joe & Kevin discusss "Empire" starring Taraji P Henson. I meant to watch this but forgot
USA Today Michelle Pfeiffer as the pop music muse of the moment - (I listen to "Riptide" all the time just so's you know)
MNPP debuts a beautiful visual to get us used to the idea of Matt Bomer playing our beloved Montgomery Clift
HitFix 'A Coachella for the rest of us' (i'm not sure I'm okay with Hitfix pretending that they're chief demographic is actressexuals -- that's our thing, right here !)
BDCWire the anniversaries people think to celebrate: this one's on Phil Hartman in Houseguest. I didn't even remember that that existed

And because Shia Labeouf's cultural shenanigans are way more interesting than his counterparts in fingers in every artsy pie (James Franco) here he is dancing in the new Sia video.

What nice sets of Golden Tomato winners!

BTW, did anyone read about Jessica Chastain's criticism of / Meryl Streep's defense of Russell Crowe's comments on ageism? The former was awesome and the latter was...super disappointing.

Funny, I've been meaning to ask you your thoughts on the notable Michelle Pfeiffer shout-outs in pop music but just never found the right avenue to bring it up.

And re: Coachella. Why would Quvenzhane Wallis be the headliner when that night has more amazing actresses? Tilda Swinton and Shirley Maclaine should be the headliners.

The Golden Tomatoes are great!

But this year was so good both for mainstream and indie movies that they could not go wrong.

I mean, I just watched "Love is Strange" and loved it. A movie that is strong enough to be in my 2015 top10. But wouldn't be in this year's top20.

Joe Reid summed up my thoughts on Empire exactly:

"Judging Empire as an heir to a Breaking Bad or even a Boardwalk Empire, despite its oversized ambitions, does the show no favors. But if you look at Empire as a bolder, juicier Nashville? That may be exactly what I'm looking for."

I'm neither a country music nor a hip-hop music fan, but both shows offer decent entertainment, with some solid performances. Can't wait to see what Taraji as Cookie does next!

Taraji chewed up Empire and spit it out. My God, she was on a rampage last night. What a character!

Empire, or as I like to call it, Hustle & Flow 2 - More Money More Problems.

January 8, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

Empire was a big ole, hot mess of a show and I can't wait for the next episode. I thought they were all pretty wonderful performances but Taraji has the best moments and she stormed though them.

I'd noticed the weird stat of two songs referencing Michelle Pfeiffer in the lyrics being in the Billboard Top 40 at the same time. They're both great - and very different! - songs, too.

James -- I was going to comment the same thing! I can't believe she backed him!

Shia Labeouf: guiltiest pleasure of the 21st century.

January 8, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Ah, Shia...sigh-a.

January 9, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

I watched the Shia/Sia/See-ah/Shy-ah video with the sound off.

And now I will never be able to unsee it.

Love Michelle Pfeiffer's return to prominence... and LOVED houseguest

January 9, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAnuj

LOL at the adjusted scores.

YESSSSS @ "Riptide". Love that Pfeiffer is still resonating with the kids. Plus, a couple years ago when Rihanna was dressing up like her all over the place shows some true fan devotion LOL. A friend and I were just talking about this too: can you think of any other white actress who has more street cred than Pfeiffer? White Gold, indeed.

I know people are kinda over the faux Coachella lineup meme but I still find them inexplicably hilarious and the Hitflix one is perfection. However, a true Actressexual would never bill Quvenzhané over Tilda. Jane Fonda on the first day, yes.
