Readers Poll: Who would you love to see as the next... ?

Here we are again. I'll give you all one more day to vote (or convince a friend) to vote on this "who should be the next Amy Madigan?" poll, cutting that poll off this Thursday night (04/09). In the meantime though, let's honor the men despite our perpetual actressy focus! Same parameters apply as the last poll-- only one Oscar nomination, more than 20 years ago, still alive, over 50, still Oscarless -- the latter meaning that an Honorary Oscar still disqualifies you. So who should it be? Here are the actors who fit the brief. 

While a man isn't going to be able to win Best Supporting Actress like Amy Madigan, it's still fun to contemplate a similar scenario. It wasn't that long ago that it happened for Robert Downey Jr. in Oppenheimer (2023). Judd Hirsch also managed to return after an even longer time away from his first nomination though his role in The Fabelmans (2022) wasn't substantial enough to spark a winning narrative like Madigan or RDJ.

Will Robert Downey Jr's scenery chewing in Oppenheimer, John Magaro's stealth beautiful support in Past Lives, and Ryan Gosling's giddy winking joy be "Kenough" several months from now when the Oscar nominations are announced? That's the pressing question at the moment when it comes to the Best Supporting Actor race. They're surely the top violable contenders from the first seven months of the year, give a pair from Air. But can you choose between the foul mouth charisma of Chris Messina and the hesitant gamber cool of Ben Affleck? 

We frame the Best Supporting Actor race this way because who knows what the rest of year might hold in terms of releases...

25th Anniversary: "Home for the Holidays"

In high school, I managed to hoodwink my journalism advisor into letting me review movies for our semi-regular school paper. In some cases, these were movies my parents certainly did not approve of (Se7en, Showgirls, etc.); in other cases, there were movies I would have seen anyway but was able to write off as a “class expense.” Home for the Holidays, Jodie Foster’s sophomore directorial effort, fell into the latter camp.  

Arriving on a post-Oscar blitz of new films starring Holly Hunter (e.g. Copycat, Crash—no, not that one), Home for the Holidays got lost in the shuffle of both 1995’s crop of holiday fare and its stars own filmography...

Prime for April - Screengrab Roulette

As we do, we've frozen random new to Amazon Prime titles and grabbed the first screengrab that popped up. Though they're leaning heavily on 1990s titles at the moment, their quality of offerings is far outpacing whatever B pictures Netflix has been licensing of late. Comment Party: Which will you be watching and which of the "new" streaming titles would you most want to read a write-up on this month? I'll obey your consensus command.

Remember when wealthy perv Billy Baldwin was spying on all his tenants including sexy Sharon Stone who caught on to him? The 90s were THE decade for erotic thrillers, which have gone completely out of fashion, just like romantic comedies.
