Welcome to the Academy - The Lucky 322

As is their annual tradition now AMPAS has released the list of the names they've offered memberships too. If you're new to the tradition, you'll note in the following list that most of the time a first nomination will results in an invite (but not always) and that generally a few people who weren't nominated but got a lot of buzz the previous season will be invited (hi, David Oyelowo & Gugu Mbatha Raw). Lately the lists have gotten longer and much more surprising too as the Academy attempts to broaden its demographic after years of being dinged for skewing too  'old white and male'

The complete list of 322 potential inductees is below. There's a welcome to the Academy reception in September for those that accept and then the process starts again. The Academy works on a referral basis of sorts so current members can nominated new prospective members and that process (a longer list of names than this - never publicized that I'm aware of) concludes in March each year. Unless they're all "You can't sit with us!" then they end up on this list which comes out in the summer.

So let's look at who was invited.

Multiple Branches
Damien Chazelle (Writer/Director) Whiplash
Malcolm D. Lee (Writer/Director) The Best Man Holiday
Paweł Pawlikowski (Writer/Director) Ida
Abderrahmane Sissako (Writer/Director) Timbuktu
Damian Szifron (Writer/Director) Wild Tales
Andrey Zvyagintsev (Writer/Director) Leviathan
Mathilde Bonnefoy (Documentary/Editing) Citizen Four

Damian Szifron, WILD TALES writer/director

These eight people must decide which of the two branches that invited them they will join. While members can be on more than one branch -- I imagine Warren Beatty, for example, is on a few since he's been nominated in four different categories -- they can't join two in one year.

Actors and Actresses are in the same branch but I've separated them just for fun as befits the Oscar categories and also to point out that they invited way more men than women, more than twice as many! Hey, I thought they were working on the diversity thing! They also invited both men who got crying closeups at the ceremony earlier this year.

315 more people after the jump...

Actors
Choi Min-sik– “Lucy,” “Oldboy”
Benedict Cumberbatch – “The Imitation Game,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”
Martin Freeman – “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “Hot Fuzz”

Gugu Mbatha-Raw – “Beyond the Lights,” “Belle”
Rosamund Pike – “Gone Girl,” “Pride & Prejudice”
Emma Stone – “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” “The Help”

I will always have a soft spot for Heather Graham thanks to Roller Girl but she and Jodi Long seem like entirely random choices. But who knows, maybe they'll have the best taste on their ballots!

Casting Directors
Lucy Bevan – “Cinderella,” “The Hundred-Foot Journey”
Victoria Burrows – “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” “King Kong”
Aisha Coley – “Selma,” “Beyond the Lights”
Patricia DiCerto – “Blue Jasmine,” “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”

April Webster – “Tomorrowland,” “Star Trek”
Tricia Wood – “Woman in Gold,” “The Lincoln Lawyer”

Love the inclusion of Aisha Coley - that Selma job can't have been easy.

Remember how great THE BLING RING looked?

Cinematographers
Christopher Blauvelt – “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby,” “The Bling Ring”
Adriano Goldman – “August: Osage County,” “Jane Eyre”
Ben Kasulke – “Laggies,” “Safety Not Guaranteed”

Tristan Oliver – “ParaNorman,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox”
Hoyte Van Hoytema – “Interstellar,” “Her”
Roman Vasyanov – “Fury,” “End of Watch”
Łukasz Żal – “Ida,” “Joanna”

Great to see Blauvelt, Lipes, Goldman, and Vasyanov here since they haven't gotten a lot of attention in the past for fine work. Hoyte Van Hoytema is a no brainer of course and the fact that he's still waiting for his first nomination -ARGH!

Wes Anderson has great taste in costume designers

Costume Designers
Kasia Walicka Maimone – “Foxcatcher,” “Moonrise Kingdom”
Francesca Livia Sartori – “Piazza Fontana: The Italian Conspiracy,” “When the Night”

Chris Spellman – “Paper Towns,” “This Is the End”
Patrick Tatopoulos – “300: Rise of an Empire,” “Total Recall”
Charlotte Watts – “Mr. Holmes,” “Mr. Turner”

Interesting that they invite animation production designers (Bryn Imagire) as no animated film has ever been nominated in that category though several have been worthy.

Boon Jong-Ho is an inspired choice!

Damn, that list is longer than Greer Garson's acceptance speech.

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

That list of music branch invitees is odd. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, Johnny Greenwood, and especially Dave Gruisin had to have been invited before, right?

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

"they invited way more men than women, more than twice as many"

uuuuuuugggggghhhhhhhh

Master thespian Dev Patel, an Academy member at long last!

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJan

How is it possible that Joe Wright was JUST admitted to the AMPAS? That's the biggest travesty on this list. Three of his films have earned two Oscars out of fifteen nominations.

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

I've seen Heather Graham a couple of times watching rando art-house movies at Walter Reade so she might have good taste maybe!

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJason

Maybe Oyelowo now can stop saying he was robbed. Love the inclusions of Denis O'Hare, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Abderrahmane Sissako and Francois Ozon.

Isn't that the director of Tangerines under the directors branch?

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersummer

OK, a few things right off the bat:

1. Kevin Hart. What?
2. Gugu!
3. Why are there more publicists than producers *every time*?
4. If a nomination does not trigger an automatic invitation, how does AMPAS determine who gets one and who doesn't? (And wouldn't suck if you got dissed but your fellow nominee[s] didn't?)
5. Kevin Hart. I'm sorry...what?!

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

Kevin Hart as part of the voting Academy? Oh shit.

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

I prefer the more diplomatic system of SAG where members who pay their dues are allowed to vote.

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered Commenter3rtful

The inclusion of Kevin Hart bothers me WAY less than the fact that they're inducting 18 actors to only 7 actresses.

June 26, 2015 | Unregistered Commentercash

If Kevin Hart is a member of AMPAS, and Rene Russo is not...OMFG!

June 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

Did Patricia Arquette's speech turn people off? Or was she already a member?

June 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

I wish I could post that Gia Gunn GIF when she sees Darienne Lake in the sewing room and says, "My God, there's room for everybody! Let's just say that!" re: allowing Kevin Hart Academy membership. SMH.

June 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterDorian

So you don't need to have been nominated first in order to receive an invite?

How long has this being going on? Just curious cos there's been a lot of criticism about Barbra Streisand becoming a member BEFORE she was nominated for Funny Girl.

Remember - Streisand TIED with Katherine Hepburn in 1967 and a LOT of people claimed that if Barbra wasn't a member she would have lost Best Actress by ONE VOTE.

And you mention some nominees have NOT been invited by the Acadeny. Any examples?

June 27, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBette Streep

Bette Streep: The complaints about Streisand had nothing to do with her not yet being a nominee — it was the fact that she was admitted to the Academy before she had made her screen debut that raised eyebrows.

June 28, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterGuy Lodge

AMPAS also requires members to pay their memberships fees in order to vote, if I remember correctly.

You don't need to be nominated for an Oscar to be invited (though it's a surefire way to get some traction); you need to be sponsored by two people from your particular branch.

You cannot be a member of more than one branch at a time, but they changed the rules a few years back that if you were nominated for an Oscar in a particular category, then you could also vote for the nominees each year. So someone like Kenneth Branagh (who is a confirmed member though which branch is uncertain) would be a member of the actors branch (for example), but also eligible to vote for best director and best screenplays during the first round.

And most nominees in the big 8 categories get nominated right away (unless they're child actors and then they might make them wait a few years), so Patricia Arquette is almost 100% likely to already be a member. Outside of the big 8, though, they can make nominees wait for years (Prince, for example, was nominated for best song in the '80s, but only invited a few years ago).

Rene Russo is not confirmed as a member yet.
