"Carol" is a tease
Just gorgeous. We'll Yes No Maybe So it with the full trailer but obviously we're all in. It's Todd Haynes. It's actressy. And the cinematography, by Edward Lachman who previously shot Far From Heaven, Mildred Pierce, and I'm Not There for Haynes, is suitably ravishing.
The song, for those who are curious, is Margaret Whiting's rendition of "My Foolish Heart". Add it to your every playlist in anticipation. Whiting was a famous singer in the 40s and 50s and even had her own television series in the 50s with her sister. Margaret provided Susan Hayward's singing voice in Valley of the Dolls (1967) as well.

Of course I am a yes, but the trailer has a drag queen vibe, no? Campy or it's the period depicted? My only fear for Cate Blanchett is that she not try and be too much, what with her move to LA and all. Maybe she does want to try and be the new Queen. Good luck sister.
What a great trailer: bits and pieces of how they might interact with each other, a quick glimpse at what the conflict might be (police digging through her apartment?), all while setting a nostalgic, melancholy mood.
And yet it still knows to emphasize emotion more than say, plot points. Beautiful!
"Far from Heaven" is such an undervalued masterpiece...
Tyler -- yes, it sure is.
Bryan -- this is why teasers are nearly always superior to trailers.
I've watched it about 35 times. No lie.
I will abstain from watching a full trailer, especially if it is 2 minutes plus. trailers should not exist and instead we should only have teasers like this one. What a beauty.
dying dying dead.
(how will i ever survive the wait?)
Yes, and I fully support Cate moving to LA. Meryl did it on advice on how to maintain her career and treat the kids to good schools and California dreaming, so there is precedent. I want her to do great from here on out.
I'm just gonna start crying right now.
BTW I revisited Mildred Pierce earlier this year and it was approximately 10x better than I remembered. I just love how he interprets long ago time periods. So clear-eyed and lovely.
This looks so divine.
Wish we saw a glimpse of Sarah Paulson though!
This is amazing. Holy shit!
Ok... the last clips or whatever they released honestly didn't do anything for me...kinda underwhelmed me. I wasn't too excited. But this teaser is amazing! I'm so excited now.
Margaret Whiting also happened to marry one of the first gay porn superstars of the 70's, Can't make this stuff up!
The hazy rainbow flag background with the title cards is a very savvy inclusion. I'm so ready for this film!!!
Love it.
Simply gorgeous...a YES no doubt.
This soundtrack should kill.
Waiting for this movie will be the death of me but at least it's kinda close now.
I've followed it since it was announced with John Crawley and Mia W. The producers really fought a long road to the production and Cate too, so much so she gets her first executive producer credit alongside her husband. And TODD HAYNES FIRST MOVIE IN 8 YEARS!!!!! His vision and atention to detail all on display already even if he did not write the material for the first time. For me, the most exciting American director. Unpopular opinion but Velvet Goldmine is his masterpiece.
Add to that 2 great female roles (possible 3 but Abby is too minor) from Patrícia Highsmith and it's impossível not to hype this up.
Jows: Velvet Goldmine is a masterpiece. I refuse to believe that opinion is anything but popular. :)
It has some big detractors but I find it endlessly fascinating. At first, I hated Jonathan Rhys Meyers performance but he creates a void at the center of the movie, almost an alien, that I grew to love. McGregor's never been better, Colette is pitch perfect.
The narrative is kind of wild, it holds nothing back and some plots get lost in the suffle but if you're recreating that era, it works so well. Not to mention the costumes. One of the best uses of costume design put to film and I say that with no fear of hyperbole. Flaw-fucking-free.
If only Todd would have made more movies but I guess it's hard to finance stuff like this and it's even worse to realize how they all probably lost money. Hopefully Weinstein and the cast go all out on promotion and Carol can have a solid gross and be his first Oscar nomination.
I wanna see Cate and Rooney on the cover of Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair, make it happen publicists.
Jows:
Far From Heaven broke even, but yes, his films have been money losers.
Safe: Unknown budget (but let's say that was done for $2 million), grossed $512,245, amounting to a loss of about $1.75 million, if my budget guess is accurate.
Velvet Goldmine: $9 million budget, $1 million gross. Loss of $8.5 million.
Far From Heaven: $13.5 million budget, $29 million gross. Earnings of $1 million.
I'm Not There: Estimated $20 million budget, $11 million gross. Loss of $14.5 million.
I want Carol to EARN enough money that it puts Todd Haynes in the black, because he's SO earned it at this point. What that would involve, though, is Carol grossing, minimum, $47.5 million more than double the budget of Carol, because Haynes, right now, is a combined total of about $23.75 million in the red.
I'm not just a yes...I'm a "what other film even matters this year" kind of yes!

that was everything!!!
Patryk -- really?
Volvagia & Jows -- safe's estimated budget was 1 million.
but in discussing profitability we need to consider that theatrical showings are often loss leaders, particularly in the 1990s, for DVD sales. My guess is that he's basically a break even or slight loss filmmaker but looks good on studio library type of filmmaker.
but i will never understand what weinstein co did with I'M NOT THERE. that was one of the worst botched releases that i'd ever seen, totally withholding it from the public despite lots of press, and then just one or two theaters hoping for Oscar nods. disastrous rollout.
With this, Freeheld, Grandma and The Dressmaker, this fall is going to be full of lesbians. And I'm excited for all of them.
@ Jows: And yet you neglect to mention Bale, ;-) so excellent in VG and I'm Not There, two of Haynes' masterpieces.
Nat - see Jack Stillman, aka Jack Wrangler, who remained married to Ms. Whiting until his death. Now that is a biopic for someone to get working on. I see Ryan Gosling as Jack and Glenn Close as Maggie.
Mr Haynes is the modern master of classic Hollywood style.
