Emmy Noms 2016: Drama / MiniSeries, First Impressions
Previously: The Comedy Nominations
On the Outs: The big news emerging from this Emmy nomination morning is that Orange is the New Black's 3rd season did not go over well with Emmy voters falling from all the major categories but it did receive a casting nomination. The Good Wife also didn't get a particularly warm nomination send off in its final season with only a handful of minor nominations.
Suddenly In: After years of pressuring the Academy, television critics finally got their beloved "The Americans" in the running in most of the big categories. Perhaps it was the title? Everything "American" did well... "The Americans", "American Crime", American Crime Story" etcetera.
Still In: Most everything they previously loved but particularly Game of Thrones which I believe is now the most nominated show in the history of the Emmys with 106 nominations from its six seasons. It's won 26 Emmys already.
Still Out: The Leftovers was snubbed again. Two brilliant, challenging, original, and very different seasons and not a single nomination even in technical categories in either year. For shame, Emmy voters, for shame.
The nominees with brief commentary...
DRAMA
Outstanding Drama Series
"Americans" (1st nomination. 4th season)
"Better Call Saul" (2nd season. 2nd nomination)
"Downton Abbey" (6th season. 6th nomination... though the first was in another category)
"Game of Thrones" (6th season. 6th nomination)
"Homeland" (5th season. 4th nomination)
"House of Cards" (4th season. 4th nomination)
"Mr Robot" (1st season. 1st nomination)
Similarity to Last Year: 5/7 They had to make one change with Mad Men gone so in goes Mr Robot, the most buzzed about freshman series. But the other change was voluntary: they dumped Orange is the New Black (3rd season) for The Americans (4th season). It's wonderful to see The Americans finally get its due but why couldn't it have dumped one of the long in the tooth shows that really don't deserve automatic placement each year?
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Claire Danes, "Homeland" (5 noms in 5 seasons - 2 additional nominations and 3 wins in total)
Viola Davis, "How To Get Away With Murder" (2nd nomination, 2nd season)
Taraji P Henson, "Empire" (2nd nomination, 2nd season)
Tatiana Maslany, "Orphan Black" (2nd nom, 4th season)
Keri Russell, "The Americans" (1st nom, 4th season)
Robin Wright, "House of Cards" (4th nom, 4th season)
Similarity to Last Year: 5/6. Forced to make one change with Mad Men cancelled they opted for the long overdue Keri Russell in The Americans
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Kyle Chandler, "Bloodline" (2nd season, 2nd nom ... 3 previous nominations and 1 win)
Rami Malek, "Mr Robot" (1st nom, 1st season)
Bob Odenkirk, "Better Call Saul" (2nd nom, 2nd season - 7 noms/2 wins in other categories)
Matthew Rhys, "The Americans" (1st nom, 4th season)
Liev Schreiber, "Ray Donovan" (2nd nom, 3rd season - 1 previous nomination)
Kevin Spacey, "House of Cards" (4th nom for 4 seasons, 4 additional noms in other categories)
Similarity To Last Year: 4/6. They were forced to make two changes with Jeff Daniels and Jon Hamm no longer eligible - they went with Rami Malek and Matthew Rhys. They made no voluntary changes.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Emilia Clarke, "Game of Thrones" (3rd nom in 6 seasons)
Lena Headey, "Game of Thrones" (3rd consecutive nom in 6 seasons)
Dame Maggie Smith, "Downton Abbey" (5th nomination, 6 seasons, 2 wins for this character. 4 previous nominations and a win for other shows)
Maura Tierney, "The Affair" (1st nomination, 2nd season. 1 previous nomination)
Maisie Williams, "Game of Thrones" (1st nomination, 6th season)
Constance Zimmer, "UnREAL" (1st nomination, 1st season)
Similarity to Last Year: 2/6. Almost a major shakeup in this category where they only had to replace one performer with Christina Hendricks no longer eligible after 6 nominations for her Mad Men character. They dumped 2 time winner Uzo Aduba, constant nominee Christine Baranski (the only time she's missed for The Good Wife and the last season no less) and Joanne Froggat for Downton Abbey after 3 nominations for her character. But "a major shakeup" sounds more exciting than it is because they just welcomed in another Game of Thrones actress, and added back in another constant nominee (Dame Maggie Smith). The breakthroughs: Maura Tierney and Constance Zimmer.
Sorry About It: The astounding female casts of The Leftovers and Orange is the New Black were all left out
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Jonathan Banks, "Better Call Saul" (3rd nomination for this character, 4th overall)
Peter Dinklage, "Game of Thrones" (6th nomination in 6 seasons for this character, 1 win)
Kit Harington, "Game of Thrones" (1st nomination, 6th season)
Michael Kelly, "House of Cards" (2nd nomination, 4th season)
Ben Mendelsohn, "Bloodline" (2nd nomination, 2nd season)
Jon Voight, "Ray Donovan" (2nd nomination, 3rd season. 2 previous nominations for other things)
Similarity to Last Year: 4/6. Both changes were voluntary. GASP. They said goodbye to Jim Carter for Downton Abbey after 4 nominations and Alan Cumming after 3 nominations for his Good Wife character but just welcomed Voight back, and doubled down on Game of Thrones -- now the most Emmy nominated show of all time -- all over the place giving Harington his first honor.
Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series
Mahershala Ali, "House of Cards" (1st nomination)
Reg Cathey, "House of Cards" (3rd nomination for this character. 1 win)
Hank Azaria, "Ray Donovan" (1st nomination for this character. 11 previous nominations and 5 wins)
Michael J Fox, "The Good Wife" (5th nomination for this character. 17 previous nominations and 5 wins)
Paul Sparks, "House of Cards" (1st nomination)
Max Von Sydow, "Game of Thrones" (1st nomination for this character. 1 previous nomination)
Similarities to Last Year: Reg Cathey won this last year for his House of Cards character. Michael J Fox returns again for The Good Wife despite a year when The Good Wife was barely honored at all.
Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series
Laurie Metcalfe, "Horace & Pete"
Ellen Burstyn, "House of Cards"
Allison Janney, "Masters of Sex"
Margo Martindale, "The Americans"
Molly Parker, "House of Cards"
Carrie Preston, "The Good Wife"
Similarities to Last Year: Margo Martindale and Allison Janney return from last year's slate. But basically Emmy voters are only watching a handful of shows and are using the Guest categories as a regular supporting field, still despite a rich totally shifting realm of possibilities (far more changes per year in eligibility than in any other acting categories).
Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series
"Downton Abbey" - "Episode 8 (Julian Fellowes)
"Game of Thrones" - "Battle fo the Bastards" (David Benioff & DB Weiss)
"Mr Robot" - "eps1.o__hellofriend.mov" (Sam Esmail)
"The Americans" - "Persona Non Grata" (Josh Fields & Joe Weisberg)
"The Good Wife" - "End" (Robert King & Michelle King)
"UnREAL" - "Return" (Marti Noxon & Sarah Gertrude Shapiro)
Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series
"Downton Abbey" -- "Episode 9" (Michael Engler)
"Game Of Thrones" -- "Battle of the Bastards" (Miguel Sapochnik)
"Game of Thrones" -- "The Door" (Jack Bender)
"Homeland" - "The Tradition of Hospitality" (Lesli Linka Glatter)
"The Knick" -- "This is All We Are" (Steven Soderbergh)
"Ray Donovan" -- "Exsuscito" (David Hollander)
MOVIE/MINISERIES
Outstanding Miniseries
"American Crime" (2nd nomination, 2nd season)
"Fargo" (2nd nomination, 2nd season)
"Roots"
"The Night Manager"
"The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story"
Surprise: They finally dumped American Horror Story from this list!
Outstanding Television Movie
"A Very Merry Christmas"
"All the Way"
"Confirmation"
"Luther" (3rd nomination, 4th season essentially)
"Sherlock: The Abominable Bride" (3rd nomination, 4th season essentially)
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie
Felicity Huffman, "American Crime" (2nd season, 2nd nomination. Plus: 2 previous noms and a win)
Lily Taylor, "American Crime" (3rd Emmy nomination - all for different characters)
Kerry Washington, "Confirmation" (3rd emmy nomination - previous 2 from Scandal)
Kirsten Dunst, "Fargo" (1st nomination!)
Audra McDonald, "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (previously won the Tony for this. 5 previous Emmy nods and a win)
Sarah Paulson, "The People vs OJ Simpson" (5th Emmy nomination)
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie
Bryan Cranston, "All the Way"
Idris Elba, "Luther"
Tom Hiddleston, "Night Manager"
Benedict Cumberbatch, "Sherlock Holmes"
Courtney B Vance, "People vs OJ"
Cuba Gooding Jr, "People vs OJ"
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie
Regina King, "American Crime" (2nd nom, 2nd season. She won the category last year)
Kathy Bates, "AHS: Hotel" (14th nom, 3rd for AHS. 2 Emmy wins)
Olivia Colman, "The Night Manager" (1st nomination!)
Jean Smart "Fargo" (8th nomination, 3 previous wins)
Sarah Paulson, "AHS: Hotel" (6th nomination, 4th for AHS)
Melissa Leo, "Lady Bird Johnson" (3rd nomination, 1 previous win)
Similarities: With the rise of anthology shows some of the miniseries categories stay the same. King, Bates, and Paulson are all up again for different characters in the same shows
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie
Jesse Plemons, "Fargo"
Bokeem Woodbine, "Fargo"
Sterling K Brown, "People vs OJ"
Hugh Laurie, "Night Manager"
David Schwimmer, "People vs OJ"
John Travolta, "People vs OJ"
Strange: I don't normally care for the work of Denis O'Hare but I thought he did his best work yet on American Horror Story but this time they didn't nominated him.
Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special
"Fargo" -"Palindrome" (Noah Hawley)
"Fargo" - "Loplop" (Bob DeLaurentis)
"Night Manager" -(David Farr)
"People vs OJ" - "The Race Card" (Joe Robert Cole)
"People vs OJ" - "Marcia Marcia Marcia" (D.V. DeVincentis)
"People vs OJ" - "From the Ashes of Tragedy" (Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski)
Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special
"Al the Way" -(Jay Roach)
"Fargo" - "Before the Law" (Noah Hawley)
"Night Manager" -(Susanne Bier)
"People vs OJ" - "The Race Card" (John Singleton)
"People vs OJ" - "Manna From Heaven" (Anthony Hemingway)
"People vs OJ" - "From the Ashes of Tragedy" (Ryan Murphy)
MISCELLANIA
There are approximately 67 more technical categories (The Emmys are nearly as robust as the Grammys with minutae) including multiples of many of the tech categories (for example, Cinematography gets 5 different competitive fields). We'll single some of those out in later posts but for now if you're interested, go to the official Emmy site.

I know you don't watch Thrones but Von Sydow's nomination is ridiculous - he was in about 4 scenes and wasn't given anything to do. McShane was in one episode and was amazing in it but he chose to submit himself for two other shows and not Thrones showing that it really was just a money gig for him :D But what a terrific job he did, such a pro
I was just wondering if you had decided to watch season 2 of Fargo yet? I loved The People vs O.J. but I thought Fargo was even better. And if I had to choose between Kirsten Dunst and Sarah Paulson, I would just flip a coin. Both are perfection. I would love for Kirsten Dunst to be up on stage winning a major award though.
Dump Maggie Smith for anyone. Enough already.
Really happy for Constance Zimmer. I hope Laurie Metcalf can win at least one this year.
I didn't realize Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill was made for TV....makes me a little nervous that Sarah Paulson will get shut out of a win again. That is a great category!
As much as I love Kirsten Dunst in Fargo, wasn't she more a supporting actress than the Lead?
Because I can't say it enough, THE AMERICANS!!! YAY!!!!
Also, I love Fargo and think you should give it a try, but would vote for the People vs. OJ and Paulson in a heartbeat. Jean Smart for Supporting, though.
Jean Smart def wins supporting!
Kathy Bates with seven has the most nominations in the category of supporting actress limited series or movie.
Sorry Nat, can't be bitter this year. The Americans is in!!! Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys are in!!! Any other qualms I may have with the nomination list, that makes my day. I'm also really happy that Maisie Williams made it in (she may be one of three GOT ladies in that category, but I've been pulling for her since the first season, Arya has always been a highlight).
Dinklage won twice for GOT already.
The Americans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Molly Parker.
Also Sarah Paulson, Keri Russell & Lena Heady.
It feels weird to support O'Hare since I jumped that season about halfway through but he was easily giving Hotel's best performance in such a tricky part. Something about him getting nominated last year and not this year feels especially egregious. Shoutout to Evan Peters and Mare Winningham, the only AHS people the Emmys ignored that I thought were giving O'Hare something of a run for his money. I liked Bates and Paulson a lot, but Bates already has one so, eh. I'm so scared Paulson's gonna end up pulling a Sigourney on herself and come up empty handed.
If only Michelle Fairley could've lived long enough to get all this Supporting Actress love for Game of Thrones. Weird how that's the show raking in half that category with Orange right there.
Dunst was awful in Fargo - she only got nominated because she's a "moviestar" doing TV - the same thing goes for the Tony awards - if you're a famous tv/movie actor, you get nominated for sure.
Sarah Paulson was pure genius in OJ - she should win.
Sterling K Brown and ,
Courtney B Vance should win for
"People vs OJ" too.
Like many before, I am so thrilled for The Americans (loved it since season 1) it feels churlish to complain but...Poor Martha! How can you love this season and not nominate Martha! And I will light a candle tonight for Carrie Coons, Vera Farmiga, Caitriona Balfe and the perfection that is Eva Green.
Beyoncé was nominated for directing!
Is this Rupaul 1st nom?
A little Oscar/Emmy Trivia... Diane Warren is nominated for music adn lyrys for The hunting Ground, but this time with no Lady Gaga.
They nominate by default. They don't care about character arcs or anything like that. I adore Gaby Hoffman and Alison Janney, but they had barely nothing to do this season. Same goes for Michael Kelly. Dinklage and Harington? And please, there's no way Emilia Clarke is better than Baranski. I honestly don't understand how can they watch and nominate American Crime S2 and ignore Connor Jessup.
So basically, I'm mad.
Pleased to see The Leftovers mentioned as THE major snub. So not pleased it was snubbed.
For shame indeed.
I haven't even seen Season 2 of Bloodline, but holy hell, I'm glad that Ben Mendelsohn got in again. Mainly because I root for him in general. I hope that he can somehow pull out a win because I feel he's so underrated.
And don't get me started on the lack of Show Me a Hero .
I'm sure that Dunst is great, but Paulson so deserves this Emmy. Happy to see Williams make it in from GoT.
I'm so confused again. What makes a mini-series vs TV movie vs limited series? Why is Luther a movie? Does the Making of a Murderer get put in the doc category for film therefore not eligible for TV Emmys? Why is Sherlock a TV movie? AAAARGH. These lines are getting so blurry since streaming happened; I can't keep track.
Glad re The Americans noms as I've been a supporter since episode 1. AND Black-ish!!!
Sad that Sarah Lancashire didn't get a nom. Still say it's the best acting performance on TV and/or on film 2015-2016.
Wow, they just really hate the CW, don't they? I mean, there's just nothing that station can do to get a big nom. Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, etc...
And that's true about Hoffman, she really had the least to do of any of the major family members this season. And I'm sorry, I want to love Judith Light in this but I think she's actually kind of awful. I know what she's going for but I don't believe it for a second. And those big cartoony glasses don't help.
And yeah, OITNB's 3rd season may not be its best but it was infinitely better than the last season of Downton Abbey.
Glad to see Maslany, Master of None and Rupaul! And I will say, their leading actress categories for both drama and comedy are pretty tight. Go Laurie Metcalf!
Battle of the Bastards for writing? Did they vote based on the last scene with Sansa and Ramsey? I would have easily gone with The Broken Man instead. And also, where the hell is Diana Rigg's Guest nomination!!!!!
I'm sorry that Happy Valley and Sarah Lancashire haven't received much notice from either the public or The Emmys. Since Lancashire wasn't even nominated, I just hope that they will give it to Sarah Paulson for OJ.
Thank god Kerri Russell is in, finally. But no OITNB? - weird.
Agree with Sati that Max Von Sydow being nominated is a total joke.
@Chatan - so the Diane Warren song also qualifies for an Emmy? That's allowed?
and Lady Gaga not listed as writer - interesting... Some people really get greedy for an Oscar nomination don't they?
I'm surprised you didn't make a bigger hoopla with RuPaul getting nominated! Will she come in drag? Shaking up the Emmy's in the most fishy way!
Lol at Nathaniel's Game of Thrones hate. Von Sydow did not deserve the nomination however, he probably just got in because of fame.
I'm disappointed that Connor Jessup and Joey Pollari from "American Crime," who gave such devastating performances, were snubbed. Then again there was a lot of competition. Still, I bet they gave a much better performance than John Travolta.
You know what's sad: with David Schwimmer's nomination, now not only is Courtenay Cox the only Friends star who wasn't nominated for Friends, she is now the only Friends star to not be Emmy nominated for anything since Friends ended.
I love Margo Martindale but it's an absolute crime she won for season 3 and is nominated again here for season 4 in guest actress. She was a big part of the first two seasons but was basically written off to pursue other projects and now shows up for one or two scenes a season. Just on that show there are far more deserving best guest actresses: Lois Smith for a resigned old woman in the absolute wrong place/wrong time scenario for season three, and Ruthie Ann Miles as Elizabeth's friend/target who's one of the very few to connect with Elizabeth emotionally.
I love The Americans, and am happy it's nominated, but noms like Martindale make you wonder if they actually even watch the shows.
Eli -- i honored RuPaul in the previous post listing the Comedy nominees
Ben - CRAZY STATISTIC. Poor Courtney.
DJ DeeDay -- yeah, the CW has relaly been making an effort with quality but barely any luck. Still their 4 nominations for Crazy Ex Girlfriend is the most they've ever gotten for a show.
P.S. does anyone know where you can watch AMERICAN CRIME or PEOPLE VS OJ? they weren't available on On Demand when i checked recently.
Yay Maslany and Maura Tierney! Tierney was so great this season but it felt so long ago I was sure they forget her.
Also digging the Mr Robot love.
HELL YAS baby. The sheer abundance of noms for Game of Thrones makes it a real winner for Drama Series again.
Maisie Williams and Kit Harrington's first noms! Long time coming.
I hope to God that Lena Headey and Kit wins!
I am fucking PETRIFIED that Christine Baranski is not nominated for Drama Supporting Actress!!!
Mandy Patinkin should've been nommed too.
Robing Wright and Kevin Spacey FTW
I have such a huge hard-on for Paul Sparks.
Hooray for Molly Parker.
Battle of the Bastards is bound to be one of the best tv episodes of all time!! I would riot if Miguel Sapochnik do not win
Where is Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac for Show Me a Hero? And Patrick Wilson?!
I blame all this on the walking turd of Cuba Gooding. I hope Courtney Vance pulled a Leslie Odom Jr on him.
Sarah Paulson MUST win this year.
I guess all that Taylor Swift bullshit finally bears a fruit for Tom Hiddleston.
I am rooting for Hugh Laurie.
Olivia Colman YAY
I would think People vs. OJ will show up on Netflix eventually like AHS (since it is American Crime Story from Ryan Murphy). FWIW, I looked all over for American Crime after Regina King won the Emmy last year and couldn't find it. This season was very good, though.
Kirsten Dunst may be my favorite actress, but I hope Sarah Paulson snatches up both trophies!
I'd also like to say that I'm relieved they didn't nominate Billions. That show is terrible, but I half expected the TV Academy to fall for it.
NAthaniel, SNL, ER and Cheers all have more emmy nominations than Game of Thrones.
SNL: 209
ER: 124
Cheers: 117
GoT will likely become the most nominated drama by the end of it's run, though.
Is that Kirsten Dunst in that .GIF, or Dee Wallace (Stone)?
I'm disappointed for Vera Farmiga, for Bates Motel. Really phenomenal complex work there as Mrs. Bates.
Sarah Paulson and Courtney B. Vance OWN their categories.
Arkaan - thanks i thought i'd read that it was now #1 but maybe that's just wins? but yeah, be #1 soon (of regular series, either drama or comedy - snl being a different ballgame)
suzanne -- yeah, i really am not liking this trend of stations expecting you to pay for tv shows. That's the whole point of tv is that it's free and you watch at home. I can't find American Crime anywhere in full unless you pay $20 for the whole season. No thanks. You're not a movie ;)
Patrick Wilson was robbed.
They nominate some pretty mediocre/bad performances--Mother of Dragons on Game of Thrones? She's a weak link. They're just throwing nominations at that show. Agreed that Judith Light also coasted to an undeserved nom while being kind of terrible on a great show.
In pleasantly surprising news--CONSTANCE ZIMMER! She is awesome on Unreal.
I would have LOVED to have seen Maria Bamford get nominated for Lady Dynamite.
At least Lady Gaga wasn't nominated for AHS. She was awful. That whole show is just in the toilet now.
I'm really sad Black Cindy wasn't nominated for season 3 of OitNB.
She is really deserving. That episode where she explains to the Rabbi why she wants to become a Jew... Damn, I was in tears!!
Volvagia is too busy crying about his overly adamant Jessica Jones predictions (obviously) not coming to fruition to comment.
JB - she was my choice for MVP of that season as you probably now from my own emmy ballot but she was not submitted by Orange is the New Black (or herself - not sure how submissions work) so she was not even eligible. BOO.
Joe -- i'm glad that even fans of GoT can sometiems admit that whatshername is not a good actor. One of my closest friends who loves the show said to me the other day "great character / terrible actress" but as we've seen across every single showbiz awards, when people really love something discernment about what is best about it flies out the window.
Like everyone else here, I'm delighted that The Americans finally got in.
The Emmys doubling down on Game of Thrones in the acting categories looks embarrassing. So many of the characters were stuck in stories that kept them away from the rest of the cast, meaning that Maisie Williams and Emilia Clarke got very little to do, and certainly nothing we hadn't seen already from them. Dinklage I'm fine with, but even Heady (who was deserving last year) wasn't really showing us much new this year. Kit Harrington's poor acting actually harmed a season that relied on that character so strongly. If they wanted to reward the show, why not acknowledge that most of its characters have peaks and valleys? I wouldn't have been mad to see Sophie Turner here, for example, for a much bigger part and for a much improved performance.
Sense8 nominated for Main Title Music :)
When I first posted yay for Laurie Metcalf, I didn't even realize she had 3 nominations. I just saw the Getting On nom and was happy for her, but she also nominated in both Guest Actress categories. Wow. This plus her recent Tony nom - she's having quite a year. I don't know if she has a shot at winning anything but I hope so.
Also, glad the Emmys didn't take the Golden Globe bait and ignored Casual, a very mediocre show (although I haven't finished the first season yet), but also YAY for Catastrophe getting a writing nom! The writing on that show is so great. A romantic comedy even romantic comedy haters could love.
Her strongest nominated work is her guest drama nod for Horace and Pete.
