Actress Chart Updates: Kate Winslet is Buzzing
Wonder Wheel continues to gather quite a lot of pre-release hype. It's opening quite late for a Woody Allen picture on December 1st. If you look at the history of his releases they've been summer counter-programming for a very long time now. Midnight in Paris (2011) and Blue Jasmine (2013) have been his biggest Oscar and commercial successes since the 1990s and they both opened in the summer. You have to go all the way back to Match Point (2005) to find a successful December release for the annual Woody Allens and that one came up short of expectations on Oscar nomination morning (1 nomination) despite a lot of pre-release critical buzz.
But Amazon Studios, who plan to distribute Wonder Wheel themselves (a first for them), seem to have an eye on Oscar. Perhaps they've bought into the common (and very wrong) belief that you have to be a December release to catch Oscar's eye? Good luck to them and we hope the movie is as good as we're hearing!
Consider this high praise from Kent Jones who selected the movie to close the New York Film Festival in October:
I’m not quite sure what I expected when I sat down to watch Wonder Wheel, but when the lights came up I was speechless. There are elements in the film that will certainly be familiar to anyone who knows Woody Allen’s work, but here he holds them up to a completely new light. I mean that literally and figuratively, because Allen and Vittorio Storaro use light and color in a way that is stunning in and of itself but also integral to the mounting emotional power of the film. And at the center of it all is Kate Winslet’s absolutely remarkable performance—precious few actors are that talented, or fearless.
Now, it's important to note that Kent Jones is the Festival Director and thus has an obligation to promote his festival but still... wouldn't it be wondrous to see Kate rise again after the delicious hint of her full throttle starpower returning via The Dressmaker last year?
UPDATED OSCAR CHARTS
Best Actress - Kate, Emma, and Meryl on the rise
Best Supporting Actress - Holly Hunter securely up top... for now

It would, and it would be great to deliver another great film. But as a longtime fan of his work, I know to withhold my expectations. But it's encouraging news.
I feel like any campaign for a performance in a Woody Allen movie will be weighed down by his daughter's accusations. Cate made it through last time but the noise picked up toward the end of her campaign. I feel like the outrage and think pieces will be there at the beginning of Kate's.
I saw a screener of Victoria and Abdul and I dont think Dench will be nominated. Its a lesser Frears and her hole doenst have a compelling arch at all.
"Allen and Vittorio Storaro use light and color in a way that is stunning in and of itself but also integral to the mounting emotional power of the film."
This describes "Café Society" perfectly. Still don't understand why that one wasn't in the Cinematography conversation.
Overwhelmed by the competitors this season. Love Winslet. Love her. Frighten the competition will ruin it for Bening. On the other hand if Glenn Close was actually win worthy as she was in the 80s? Both actress categories are nail biters. Kate securing her 8th nod places her in the company of Pacino and Page for single winners with 8 nods. Wait Dench also joins that group this year. Hoping no sentimental narrative builds around her.
Bening/Close (Actress) Pfeiffer/Redgrave (Supporting)
Kate, Annette, Judi, Emma, Frances, Holly, Melissa, Michelle, Kristin and Lesley freaking Manville?
There's no way this many legit acting goddesses get in, but it's fun to imagine!
Holly Hunter has 4 noms/1 win. :)
Not to be picky but Penelope Cruz has 1 win out of 3 nominations... you posted only 2, I wonder which one you missed, probably "Nine"?
My friend who worked on wonder wheel told me a while ago to keep an eye on Kate Winslet. So the buzz is probably pretty true.
Kate Winslet is overrated - I wish she would buzz off!
Kate fucking Winslet, bitcheees!!
But I do think your predictions for Actress lean on too old.
Kate Winslet is brilliant, so this buzz is not surprising or doubtful at all to me. When she's on, she's ON. The Academy, HFPA, BAFTA, they adore her. She has accomplished so much and she's still got decades ahead of her. 8th nomination is likely.
Holy mother! So much good in these charts! How the hell is one supposed to choose? I'm rooting for Sally Hawkins to get a nom in Lead.
And yay for Kate Winslet! All naysayers are mute.
No Diane Kruger? In my mind she is THE foreign threat in this category.
Yeah, let's see who comes in and surprises us. Waiting until I see someone unbiased talk about Wonder Wheel, but if Winslet is on, she can win again.
After THAT trailer, I think Stone is almost a sure thing for a nom. She looks on point.
I think your significantly under-rating Lawrence. Arononogsky and his leading ladies are not to be underrated.
I agree that hopefully Kruger will be in the running, but I could also see her completely overlooked. We will see.
I really thought Larson in Glass castle in Rooney Mara in Mary M were going to be factors this year but I don't think it's going to happen.
I really like a lot of Winslet's performances, although I feel her Oscar for The Reader was rather misguided. Hope she delivers with this movie.
I agree that you cannot rule out Streep, although she does not campaign as other actress's do.
I would love to see Leslie Manville nominated if role is worthy.
I am saying it again Kate is apparently on Blue Jasmine form and that's all I need to hear to put her at No 1.
If both Leslie Manville and Gary Oldman are nominated it would be quite a night for their son Alfie, I imagine.
"I dont think Dench will be nominated. Its a lesser Frears and her hole doenst have a compelling arch at all." - this typo made me laugh, thank you.
Streep, Winslet and Dench are often locks if their films deliver. Are there no women of cold in the running? The studio that released Wonder Woman is planning to spend $$$ for a Gal Gadot nomination. Emma Stone definitely popular but movie would have to be a big hit.
I still have more faith in Larson. I'd actually put Lawrence in the top 5. Seems like the film is a mindfuck, of the good kind Aronofsky can give us and that people love. Lawrence is already loved by the industry so a role that's big and out there and physically demanding (like most of Aronofsky's mindfucks is a good bet sight unseen.
I dunno if you heard Nathaniel, but we've also got some positive buzz on Bening as well? I didn't have much faith but those words are encouraging.
As a major Winslet fan I don't want to get carried away, but I trust Jones' comments for his praise works differently than a producer. Of course he wants to hype the movie he selected, but he only does so only after seeing it and deciding it should be in the festival. But it's not the first buzzy comment about Winslet coming out for months now, apparently Winslet really is in top form. If she was so close to winning for Steve Jobs, who knows.
@ Pivo - I've read somewhere (prob Awards Watch) that Kruger's movie has no US distributor. If that is correct, there will be no qualifying run, which precludes her from being eligible for an Oscar nomination.
Re: Winslet, I haven't been really blown away by her since Revolutionary Road, and that was nearly a decade ago. She was solid in a bunch of projects since (Mildred Pierce probably being her best), but nothing truly outstanding. With the right material she can be truly extraordinary and if this turns out to be on par with Blue Jasmine, I'm down with her getting another win.
I think The Reader was Winslet's Accused / Butterfield 8 (great performance, not even close to be the best of the year), and now she meeds her Virginia Woolf/Silence of the Lambs, that hands down undeniably best of the year classic knockout performance.
She's clearly two-time winner material.
I want Lois Smith to happen because of that heart-stopping The Americans episode, the best acted and the best single hour of the television this decade (excluding Mad Men). Smith and Russell together made me throw up when the episoded ended, Really.
Winslet's in it for the long haul despite already winning an overdue Oscar. I don't want her to beat the overdue Bening and Close. Really wish the Academy would breakdown and give Close the honorary this year so we never have to concern ourselves with her being competitive for nods and a win in either category. I think the narrative is stronger for her to be an honorary recipient like Rowlands and should get hers now. Bening is competitive Oscar winner or bust. The same goes for Pfeiffer. Though I would not mind a sentimental narrative building around Redgrave, although she likely deserves a Jean Hersholt with the other Supporting Actress winner Jolie.
1. Really, you still think Breathe could make Globe noms? The trailer looks every bit like the DOG you'd expect based on who the producer is. Sorry, but unless you're a jackass, OF COURSE the biopic you make based on your dad is going to be disgustingly sappy.
2. Look, none of the Marvel Lead performances have snuck into Globe Comedy, even though quite a few of them are more deserving than most of the nominees. But Wonder Woman is definitely a DCXU movie and, even though it's a slightly brighter lit one, that still means it can only honestly be considered a DRAMA, so that Globe nom WILL NOT HAPPEN.
I'm not a fan of Kate's win for The Reader. A very forgettable and misguided performance. She should have won for Revolutionary Road the same year instead. If she wins again for Wonder Wheel I hope it's a knock out performance.
I want Kate to win the second Oscar and I want Meryl to get to 4. My God, we need a tie.
Meryl is in the top 5 this year- let's all stop pretending now.
Agree with Cal Roth you can win a 2nd if you trump your first if they feel you outdid that performance and it was only an overdue one anyhow.
@ Holly
Let's tell Nick that Nathaniel forgot one! Probably for The Piano too!!! :D
@ Best Actress
Hmmm... Right now, lets predict Emma Thompson, Emma Stone, Saorise Ronan, Jennifer Lawarence and Salma Hayek. Cause why not?
@ Best Supporting Actress
SPC needs to apologize to Lesley Manville for that 2010 campaign. Awful release strategy.
20th Century Fox is campaigning for Meryl Streep like right now. There are tons of pictures and news of her as Katherine Graham even clips of filming and behind the scenes.
And with Spielberg it will be heavily marketed. Also Streep clearly feels passionate about the subject matter for The Papers- she will be campaigning ( though probably not as strong as others)
Best actress: Dench, McDormand, Streep, Thompson, Winslet. / Supporting actress : Hunter, Leo, Moore, Pfeiffer, Williams
I'd be awful to see Winslet snatch a 2nd win in a year when Bening and Close have potentially meaty roles.
If Meryl is nominated again, that'd be a shame indeed. It's becoming comical.
Do you think Florence Pugh could score a nomination? I feel a Winter's Bone-style nomination isn't out of the question, though her film may be too small.
Will be HEAVEN If Kate enter the selected 'eight times nominee' group.
Meryl (20)
Katherine Hepburn (12)
Jack Nicholson (12)
Bette Davis (10)
Laurence Olivier (10)
Spencer Tracy (9)
Paul Newman (9)
Marlon Brando (8)
Jack Lemmon (8)
Geraldine Page (8)
Al Pacino (8)
Peter O'Toole (8)
BUT I WANT GLENN CLOSE FINALLY WINNING!!!
I am so damn excited about Kate Winslet slaying in Wonder Wheel. She's definitely a 2-time Oscar winner ready to happen.
Sorry, I just don't see Close or Bening happening. Where is the buzz for these projects? Neither one of them have set US release dates. Not even sure The Wife has a distributor yet.
Y'all, suck it up and put Meryl Streep in the Top 5. You know deep down she's getting nominated, no matter if it's inspired and totally warranted (The Devil Wears Prada), or simply as filler (Florence Foster Jenkins). It's a Spielberg film, and it's likely to be one of the buzziest films of the season.
I'm getting a Juno-vibe from Saoirse Ronan, so I think she's definitely possible for Ladybird. Also curious to see if Lawrence gives a more disciplined performance in mother! (it will be nice to see her get away from O'Russell's "throw everything and the kitchen sink" method to acting).
Winslet/Ronan/Streep/Lawrence/Dench are my guesses now.
Glenn Close
Kate Winslet
Annette Bening
Frances McDormand
Meryl Streep l Emma Thompson
My Choices today will be that.
1995' feelings? I guess so!
Meryl
Sharon
Emma
Elizabeth
Susan
Meryl not in the top 5
come on now
... but, If I have to predict with my heart would be...
Glenn Close
Kate Winslet
Saoirse Ronan
Frances McDormand
Emma Thompson / Annette Bening / Penélope Cruz / Emma Stone
No Meryl! NOOOOO MERYL! NOOOOO JLAW!! NOOOOO DENCH!!!
Having just seen "Atomic Blonde", I think that Charlize Theron's Lorraine Broughton compares with Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, as one of the most memorable characters of a movie year, in a movie we'll see over and over again for years.
Bening
McDormand
Streep
Winslet
(Unknown fifth nominee)
Early predictions for Actress
Bening has Sony backing an earlier push unlike the botched job of A24 prioritizing Moonlight over Women screwing Bening out of a freaking nomination.
I don't know if I'll ever forgive kate winslet for being so underwhelming in Mildred Pierce

people -- part of the problem with Streep being a default nominee whether she deserves it or not is everyone insisting she's locked up from teh moment she signs on to a project. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Yes, she's usually nominated. But if you need to just go with "most obvious" this will never be the right site for it. I don't like doing that -- especially not this early when there are so many true possibilities all over the place. Sometimes that hurts my prediction tally. Sometimes that helps it, depending on whether a year turns into an "obvious" one or not.
I like reading the passionate escritures of cinephiles. Maybe I have become jaded but some of the best acting performances I have seen never even become part of the conversation. Maybe because there was no buzz for these actresses and their films. Or maybe being a non-Anglo, foreign-born actress can limit one's chances. It seems like there should be one prestige foreign actress in the lineup most of the time. Why not have three? Imagine a year where the nominees go by the names of (just thinking randomly here): Nathalie Baye, Fernanda Montenegro, Rinko Kikuchi, Magaly Solier & Anamaria Marinca. But of course, that will not ever happen.
I like the buzz around Glenn Close for The Wife although it might not gain traction once again. Can she not be a contender in the supporting category for her soon-to-be-released Crooked House? Her Lady Edith role has a very significant role in this Agatha Christie whodunit. But like 3rtful said, maybe the Honorary Oscar might more likely happen than Close winning competitively.
And is the buzz for Vanessa Redgrave for Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool? I thought she should have been nominated for Coriolanus and/or Anonymous in the 2012 for BSA.
And just to throw it out there, who knows if Isabelle Huppert will once again be in the running for Happy End, Madame Hyde or even Marvin. I'm quite obsessed with her and have been watching her films this summer. And while we're at it, the full movie of Hal Hartley's (Amateur) is on Youtube. Great to see her speak English with nary a discomfort.
Streep nominated again for being safe and boring? It would be CRIMINAL!
Yes, Pete and other Meryl Streep haters. She will be nominated again because she ALWAYS delivers great performances. Now suck that up and stop complaining.
LMAO. Come on , people, WAKE UP!
Meryl Streep in a political drama by Steven Spielberg about press freedom will be ignored by the Academy? Really?
Did you not see the Globes this year?????
