The 6th Annual Team Experience Awards!

Chris here, on behalf of my fellow Team Experience writers! Before Nathaniel shares his Top Ten and Film Bitch honors (not to mention the Oscar nominations on Tuesday - eek!), we've polled all of the other writers here at The Film Experience for their favorites of the past year without our kind and benevolent leader. It's our 6th Annual Team Experience Awards!

You'll remember last year we awarded eventual Oscar Best Picture winner Moonlight with seven prizes, and this year the wealth is slightly more shared. We had a lot of readers asking to see what our full ballot of nominations would be, so this year we have opened it up to reveal our winner and four runner-ups in each of our categories. Our nomination leader is Call Me By Your Name with 9 mentions, and craft-heavy Phantom Thread and The Shape of Water are right behind with 8.

Our most awarded however was granted to one of our most discussed, Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird. Because as Lois Smith's nun ponders: aren't love and attention the same thing? Check out our winners...

TRIVIA

  • 72 films were voted for in Best Picture, with 202 films receiving at list one mention across all categories - both numbers are up from last year.
  • Those mother/daughter father/son acting wins are just swell, no?
  • The top categories were a very tight finish between Lady Bird, Get Out, and CMBYN, with Lady Bird's original screenplay win coming down to the very final ballot. CMBYN's adapted screenplay win was the mightiest, receiving more than 3 times its nearest competitor (The Beguiled).
  • Some films with widespread love that just missed nominations in various categories: Lady Macbeth, Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, A Ghost Story, and Beatriz at Dinner.
  • Supporting Actor had the widest spread with 40 performances nominated across all ballots. Stuhlbarg still landed 70% of the ballots' top pick.
  • The most mentions without a win: Personal Shopper and mother! with 4 nominations. Shopper will have to suffice with winning last year's Best Unreleased Film category, while mother! was a mere 3 points away from a Sound win.
  • Films that missed our Top 10 despite being named Best of the Year by one of our writers: Nocturama, John Wick Chapter 2, Dunkirk, Raw, and Loveless. Nearest nomination misses: The Florida Project in our top ten and Paul Thomas Anderson for Director both missed by a single point.

So funny when Team Experience supports category fraud, like Hammer

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

cal roth - he had received votes on both sides, but got more in supporting. I'd personally put him lead, but I'd accept the argument otherwise

January 20, 2018 | Registered CommenterChris Feil

I'm seeing Shape of Water tonight, so I imagine my ballot would change, but you have to cut it off at some point.

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Lipp

Hurrah for Saoirse and Timothée, super-talented young 'uns!

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterEmma

These might be my favorite of the entire season so far. Spread love for several films, Call Me By Your Name, Get Out and Lady Bird ruling across the board and no sight of Three Billboards even in acting or writing. Surprised I, Tonya girls missed too but I can see why, much as I love Allison Janney it'll be disappointing when she wins an Oscar for that.

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterAlexD

Beautiful choices!!!

Daniela Vega just pushed Cynthia Nicon out. Otherwise, that’s my Best Actress lineup!

Love the rightful Three Billboards shutout!!

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRoger

Great mentions all up and down the board! I am surprised, however, to see no room made for Three Billboards at all. Which categories did it threaten to crack?

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDevin D

omg if ONLY this could be the oscar list - i'd just die !!

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterCharles O

Okay, I need to know who my friends are: who else voted for O'Shea Jackson, Jr., and for Starless Dreams?

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterNick Davis

Where is Arnaud Valois? Please give back your gay badges.

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Peggy Sue - he was a near miss

Devin - it simply didn't make people's lists, but Frances was close

January 20, 2018 | Registered CommenterChris Feil

Thanks all of you for making room to the BEAUTIFUL A Quiet Passion, which wasn't discussed at all on this site so i really thought it flew under the radar.

Being a big fan and supporter of the film, every mention of it on any list is a joy as it was sooooo underseen and ignored by every major award bodies. Just like James White two years ago. So Cynthia Nixon should have been a two-time Oscar nominee (or winner) by Marsh 3rd, but she'll just have to settle for Emmys and Tonys for some time...

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterClement_Paris

Would that the Oscars chose the acting winners you did. Still, my favorite surprise citations are Stewart, Pattinson, mother! in Sound, It in makeup, all that Lost City of Z love, and the two great nominations Nick mentioned. A very lovely lineup, easily my favorite next to most critics' groups. My question - how close was The Post anywhere?

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterNick T

Also fun - the first year these have Top 5's instead of winners and runner-ups! So nice to see a full spread here. Thanks a bunch for putting this together.

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterNick T

Very happy with CMBYN's trio of wins. From your lips to the Academy's ears please. Lady Bird isn't out in the UK yet but I'm really looking forward to it.

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterChrisD

@Clement_Paris - Something tells me Cynthia Nixon has an Allison Janney- (or Laurie Metcalf-) style Oscar nomination (and win) in her future. It may take another decade, but it will happen. #EGOT

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

Did the best gay film of the year, God's Own Country, wind up close in any category?

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterSan FranCinema

No way the Oscars will top these.

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered Commentereurocheese

No Betty Gabriel for Get Out?

January 20, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRahul

@Nick Davis: Team Starless Dreams, right here - it was my #2 in Best Doc. And since I almost certainly wouldn't have ever seen it without you leading me to it, let me thank you for it one last time.

January 20, 2018 | Registered CommenterTim Brayton

Wow, what a great list!!! Oscar wld never top tt!!

Sad tt The Florida Project & PTA missed by just ONE pt :( wld be nice if u guys wld go a PGA tie and have them both qualified! Lol..juz kidding

Lady Bird soars!!!!

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

Thank you for shutting out Three Billboards.

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterMichael R

Just one minor quib: How did Jane not get into the nom for documentary? Metink Jane & Faces/Places r the major contenders..

The Shape o Water jus won PGA!! I believe its stock will rise soon...so happy for Hawkins!! :)

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

Seriously...

CMBYN in Adapted Screenplay over Z and Wonderstruck?

Sheesh.

Question: How many of you guys read the script and/or the adapted material before voting?

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterManny

Manny, that isn't necessarily the only rule by which to judge an adapted screenplay. And while I have my qualms with CMBYN, one of its strongest assets is what it eliminates from the book (namely the final act).

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

I’d love to see contributors’ individual ballots! What a fantastic lineup you all came up with

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterLucille

Can't argue with any of that!

Really happy to see Kristen Stewart and Elizabeth Marvell made the final lists, though of course the Lady Bird ladies justifiably won in those categories.

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

It really pained me that I couldn't vote for Ladybird. It's not out here in the UK and I would have felt totally dishonest voting for something I didn't see! But I know I'm going to love it, and my dear countrywoman, Saoirse.

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterSeán

A lot of this made me smile but probably nothing more than seeing Manville-Marvell-Metcalf listed consecutively, and seeing appreciation for Assayas and Keoghan. This is a delightful set of honors.

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterScottC

Rahul - a lot of love for the Get Out ladies, so maybe they split eachother's votes?

Manny - I have. Jorge also has a great column called Blueprints here every Thursday ;)

Re: Three Billboards - y'all, it's not like we all bandied together against it lol. Our votes are out of love for our favorites, not against what we don't like. It (especially Frances) had its fans. And I say that as someone who doesn't like the movie.

January 21, 2018 | Registered CommenterChris Feil

Claran - Jane wasn't even close to making our top five honestly.

January 21, 2018 | Registered CommenterChris Feil

So much love for Personal Shopper. That makes me happy.

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterRobert G

Is Ronan better in Lady Bird than she was in Brooklyn? If so that would be shocking to me.

I adore her in Brooklyn.

January 21, 2018 | Unregistered Commenterhuh

I'll say this here: Lady Bird has a far better and more believable LGBT character than anyone in Call Me By Your Name. I just cannot understand why people love this movie SO much. I mean, it's a good movie. But great or excellent? Hell no.

January 22, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterPablo

huh - by my estimation, yes. Not that Brooklyn is hurting for providing her with things to do, but LB is much more layered and I'd argue a higher degree of difficulty

January 22, 2018 | Registered CommenterChris Feil

These are fantastic, and I can't really argue with any of it. I didn't really much like Phantom Thread, BUT I liked all the individual elements of it. I felt that way about 3 Billboards too, some of it is great, but the sum is lacking.

Brooklyn was fantastic and Ronan was great in it, but I think she's just as good in Lady Bird. I think Brooklyn is the better movie though, but I'm probably in the minority on that one.

January 22, 2018 | Unregistered CommenterDave in Hollywood

I get that Baby Driver isn't TFE's cup o' tea, but it missing Best Sound is just sloppy! To me, that's the most accomplished pick in any category this year.
