22 Black Dresses
by Nathaniel R
Since Hollywood's glamazons were a united force on Sunday evening towards a better industry with gender parity and less flagrant abuses of power Hollywood, we're opting not to rank the gowns this year. Hollywood's most beautiful were out in force but for the most part they proved that black need not feel funereal even if it's prioritizing solemn resolve above the more typical red carpet concerns: unique beauty, personal style, and either up to the minute contemporary trends or classic throwback glamour.
Here are the 22 gowns The Film Experience cherished most from Hollywood's second-most glamorous annual event...
And though we aren't ranking the dresses this year if we were maybe these four would reign supreme? But again we're not. But also: hats off to Diane, Viola, Geena, and Nicole.
This year's buzziest actresses have five more televised red carpets to go this year: The Critics Choice Awards (Thursday, January 11th), the Screen Actors Guild Awards (Sunday January 21st), BAFTA (February 18th), The Independent Spirit Awards (March 3rd... though not a "red carpet" event in the usual sense). And the fifth and final, the big one, Hollywood's high holy night, The Academy Awards (March 4th).
Should we expect more themed runways or will the 90th Oscars be filled with every gown color imaginable? Which were your favorite black gowns Sunday night?

Boo. I want a ranking. No fun, guys.
But yes, Kruger in particular looked great.
That's easy. Queen Mary J. Blige.
Davis, Huppert, Kidman, Janney, Pfeiffer, Ronan and Ross all looked sensational. Brava.
People of the Internet: Why Didn't Hong Chau go up onstage when Big Little Lies won?
Viola Davis looked amazing. I gay gasped when she came out to present.
Salma Hayek and Alicia Vikander were best dressed, in my opinion.
Then: Viola Davis, Nicole Kidman, Isabelle Huppert, Sally Hawkins, Diane Kruger, Octavia Spencer, Ashley Judd, Kerry Washington, Jessica Chastain
Worst dressed: (love her) Sarah Paulson. Or Frances McDormand for wearing navy (or a shade of black that appeared navy).
Nicole
Salma
Greta
Saoirse
Diane K.
Viola
All fabulous and lovely
I think Isabelle came to slay and did so five times over.
Viola, Janney, Mary J., Diane Kruger and Mariah.
Top 5:
Isabelle Huppert
Tracee Ellis Ross
Saoirse Ronan
Issa Rae (always)
Gal Gadot
My top five: Hendricks, Janney, Davis, Blige, Gadot. And of course Gerwig's radiant moment just made her stunning too.
They should haver worn red or purple.
Saoirse Ronan
Viola Davis looked like a goddess! That is all.
Diane, Gal, Nicole, Greta, and the back of Dakota's were my favourites, I reckon.
Viola, Viola, Viola. Just could not take my eyes of her, God looked great sunday night.
Ronan.Stone & Hudson for me.
Did Hudson get a boob job? Because that dress sure made it look like she had.
Great to see Geena Davis back on the red carpet! Looking amazing for almost 62!
No Sharon Stone??? Shame Nathaniel!
My top 4 - Kidman, Janney, Ronan, and Ross.
Samira Wiley and Saoirse. Runner-up: Janney when she had the bird on her shoulder.
Viola won the night.
I would say Diane Kruger and Allison Janney killed it. I wouldn't think of Geena Davis as someone who would even show up or care to dress nicely and yet here she is looking great. Huppert looked classy, Ross looked perfect.
I hated the trend of regular fabric combined with shiny fabric that everybody seemed to go with. One regular leg, one shiny leg, shiny dress on top of a normal fabric pant and so on.
You got most of my favorites, but I also really liked Natalie Portman's gown. Dakota, Tracee, and Diane were the tops for me.
BD -- back in the day (aka the early 90s) Geena Davis was quite a style icon on the red carpets (the super tall actresses seem to end up becoming red carpet stars -- see also: kidman & thurman) so i was happy to see her there for sure.
