The Golden Globe Nominations!
by Nathaniel R
HFPA president Meher Tatna introduced Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann, and Christian Slater to announce the nominations for the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards. We didn't quite get the shakeups we wanted for players that needed the high profile boost of the Globes (like Toni Collette or Carey Mulligan) to boost their dark horse Oscar prospects but the Globes gonna Globe and there's as much to praise (Charlize Theron!) as their is to shake your fists at (Bohemian Rhapsody in Best Picture, wtf?).
In not so great news (unless you love it of course) Vice led the nominations with 6 honors, with The Favourite, Green Book, and A Star is Born tied as runner-up to most nominations with 5 each. UPDATE: We've shared Team Experience reactions to the snubs and nominated directors, and talked the fate of First Man and Widows, but here was our first quick take on the nomination after the jump along with some commentary...

Drama
The nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody annoys -- even if you enjoy that movie because of its music (no judgment, Queen is an awesome band), it is a messy film, clearly showing it's turmoil with 3 different directors during production and troubles on set and band interference with the narrative. All the seams show.
Stupid trivia: "B" was the letter of the day apparently with all four titles having a prominent B in the title.
Musical or Comedy
- Crazy Rich Asians
- The Favourite
- Green Book
- Mary Poppins Returns
- Vice
A very expected list... though it's a smidgeon odd if you think about it that they gave the original Mamma Mia! (2008) a Best Picture nomination in this category even though it was wildly inept as a motion picture and skipped the far superior sequel this year! Vice led the nominations... which is something.
Actress, Drama
- Glenn Close, The Wife [READ OUR INTERVIEW]
- Lady Gaga, A Star is Born
- Nicole Kidman, Destroyer
- Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
- Rosamund Pike, A Private War
The Globes gonna globe so they went with big stars even if their Oscar prospects are a bit wobbly right now (Kidman and McCarthy)... the sole shock is Rosamund Pike's highly praised performance in an underperforming film. But this is sad news for the awards season prospects of Toni Colette (Hereditary) and Carey Mulligan (Wildlife) who seemed to have a better shot here than they did with Oscar given the two different lead actress categories.
Actress, Musical or Comedy
- Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns
- Olivia Colman, The Favourite
- Elsie Fisher, Eighth Grade
- Charlize Theron, Tully
- Constance Wu, Crazy Rich Asians
A gorgeous list, don't you think? Happy to see Elsie Fisher included and THRILLED for the Charlize Theron surprise for Tully, one of the year's best but most misunderstood films.
Actor, Drama
- Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born
- Willem Dafoe, At Eternity's Gate
- Lucas Hedges, Boy Erased
- Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
- John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman
Lucas Hedges surprises with a nomination for Boy Erased and John David Washington's nomination for BlacKkKlansman also suggests that the film is strong heading probably headed toward SAG Ensemble and Oscar Best Picture nominations.
This is the first major speedbump for Ethan Hawke, though, for his rapturously praised work in First Reformed and an even bigger blow to Ryan Gosling's Oscar prospects for First Man; Gosling is a big enough star for immediate Globe interest. That they passed him by is not a good sign even though he's terrific in the movie.
Actor, Musical or Comedy
- Christian Bale, Vice
- Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Poppins Returns
- Viggo Mortensen, Green Book
- Robert Redford, Old Man and the Gun
- John C Reilly, Stan & Ollie
Sad that they didn't find room for LaKeith Stanfield for Sorry to Bother You. Reilly is good in Stan & Ollie but it's such a Globe choice since it's a low profile British movie that is barely seen and coming out for New Year's essentially, so it will use this Globe nod for all its worth, promotion wise.
Supporting Actor
- Mahershala Ali, Green Book
- Timothée Chalamet, Beautiful Boy
- Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman
- Richard E Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
- Sam Rockwell, Vice
Lots of Category Fraud happening here with Ali and Chalamet both taking up spots that should've gone to suppporting actors but what can you do. Does the exclusion of Sam Elliott spell trouble for his Oscar prospects or is that merely a slight slip as oddities do happen in awards season. For the record, Rockwell isn't in very much of Vice but I knew people would love his work as George W Bush. He's fun in his couple (few?) scenes... even if a nomination is generous.
Supporting Actress
- Amy Adams, Vice
- Claire Foy, First Man
- Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
- Emma Stone, The Favourite
- Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
It's our exact Oscar prediction list. But alas, two category frauds with Stone & Weisz taking up spots. They're great in The Favourite dont get me wrong but it's supposed to be a category for character actresses, not leading ladies.
Director
- Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born
- Alfonso Cuaron, Roma
- Peter Farrelly, Green Book
- Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman
- Adam McKay, Vice
Sometimes the Globes surprise with better directors list than Oscar comes up with. Not this year... unless Oscar really fudges up. We really don't need Farrelly and McKay BOTH nominated this year when you've got people like Yorgos Lanthimos, Damien Chazelle, Marielle Heller, Ryan Coogler, Pawel Pawlikowski, Steve McQueen, Ari Aster, Hirokazu Koreeda, Bo Burnham, Paul Schrader, and Debra Granik all rightthere and available with stronger work.
Screenplay
- Roma
- The Favourite
- Green Book
- If Beale Street Could Talk
- Vice
They combine adapted and original which is why we see great screenplays like Eighth Grade and First Reformed and Can You Ever Forgive Me? shut out. Well that reason plus bad taste!
Foreign Film
- Capernaum (Lebanon)
- Girl (Belgium)
- Never Look Away (Germany)
- Roma (Mexico)
- Shoplifters (Japan) [READ OUR INTERVIEW]
All high profile contenders soperhaps this spells trouble for Poland's Cold War. That said Oscar and Globe foreign film lineups never go 5/5 so beware if you're predicting this exact list for Oscar. In fact, they never even go 4/5... Here's how this century has gone so far and you'll see that 2 of 5 is most common. Part of the difference is that the Globes work from a different eligibility list but it's also just different taste.
2000 - 2/5
2001 - 2/5
2002 - 3/5
2003 - 1/5
2004 - 2/5
2005 - 3/5
2006 - 2/5
2007 - 0/5
2008 - 2/5
2009 - 2/5
2010 - 2/5
2011 - 1/5
2012 - 3/5
2013 - 2/5
2014 - 3/5
2015 - 2/5
2016 - 2/5
2017 - 3/5
Score
- Black Panther, Goransson
- First Man, Hurwitz
- Isle of Dogs, Desplat
- Mary Poppins Returns, Shaiman
- A Quiet Place, Beltrami
Good list! Well done, HFPA.
Songs
- "All the Stars" Black Panther
- "Girl in the Movies" Dumplin'
- "Requiem for a Private War" Private War
- "Revelation" Boy Erased
- "Shallow" A Star is Born
Troye Sivan and Annie Lennox and Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga and Dolly Parton!!! The Globes love having celebrities in the house and they're all way more famous than Marc Shaiman who wrote those Mary Poppins songs (he's nominated in score, so he's fine)! That said this is another category that doesn't correlate with Oscar's tastes all that well.
You have to wonder, though, given the Globes obsesssion with nominating pop stars in this category, why they dont have performances on their show?
Animated Feature
- Incredibles 2
- Isle of Dogs
- Mirai
- Ralph Breaks the Internet
- Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse
This might easily be the Oscar list, too, though Mirai obviously isn't safe as the outside America contender with lots of other overseas possibilities.
TV
(links go to reviews)
Drama Series
- The Americans (FX) season 6 *first nomination for series*
- Bodyguard (Netflix) season 1
- Homecoming (Amazon Prime) season 1
- Killing Eve (BBC America) season 1
- Pose (FX) season 1
Including the seasons here because it's always fun to note how obsessed the Globes are with new shows. Notice how quick they dumped The Handmaid's Tale which won last year.
Comedy Series
- Barry (HBO) season 1
- The Good Place (NBC) season 3
- Kidding (SHO) season 1
- The Kominsky Method (Netflix) season 1
- The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (Amazon Prime) season 2 *won last year*
The Good Place is the sole big 3 network to make it in to the series nominations. I'm so behind on TV since movies are my life but I've just started watching it and it's so wonderful.
Limited Series
- The Alienist (TNT)
- The Assassination of Gianna Versace (FX)
- Escape at Dannamora (SHO)
- Sharp Objects (HBO)
- A Very English Scandal (Amazon Prime)
I've been meaning to watch A Very English Scandal for the longest. Do you like this lineup?
Comedy Actress
- Kristen Bell, The Good Place (S3)
- Candice Bergen, Murphy Brown (S11)
- Alison Brie, GLOW (S2)
- Rachel Brosnahan, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (S2) *won last year*
- Debra Messing, Will & Grace (S10)
Did this category need TWO women reprising their most famous roles though?
Comedy Series, Actor
- Sacha Baron Cohen, Who is America? (S1)
- Jim Carrey, Kidding (S1)
- Michael Douglas, The Kominsky Method (S1)
- Donald Glover, Atlanta (S2) *won two years ago*
- Bill Hader, Barry (S1)
Last year's winner Aziz Ansari was not eligible this year
Drama Series, Actress
- Caitronia Balfe, Outlander (S4)
- Moss, The Handmaid's Tale (S2) *won last year*
- Oh, Killing Eve (S1)
- Roberts, Homecoming (S1)
- Keri Russell, The Americans (S6)
Drama Series, Actor
- Jason Bateman, Ozark (S1)
- Stephan James, Homecoming (S1)
- Richard Madden, Bodyguard (S1)
- Billy Porter, Pose (S1)
- Matthew Rhys, The Americans (S6)
Last year's winner Sterling K Brown(This Is Us) was not nominated this year
Actress in a Limited Series
- Amy Adams, Sharp Objects
- Patricia Arquette, Escape at Dannemora
- Connie Britton, Dirty John
- Laura Dern, The Tale
- Regina King, Seven Seconds
Adams and King are nominated together in two categories! (also supporting actress, movies)
Actor in a Limited Series
- Antonio Banderas, Genius: Picasso
- Daniel Brühl, The Alienist
- Darren Criss, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
- Benedict Cumberbatch, Patrick Melrose
- Hugh Grant, A Very English Scandal
Supporting Actress TV
- Alex Bornstein, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (S2)
- Patricia Clarkson, Sharp Objects
- Penelope Cruz, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
- Thandie Newton, Westworld (S2)
- Yvonne Strahovski, The Handmaid's Tale (S2)
It's so frustrating that the Golden Globes are so stingy with supporting players, only one category for all kinds of television while the leads have three different categories. Nevertheless this is a good list, isn't it?
Supporting Actor TV
- Alan Arkin, The Kominsky Method (S1)
- Kieran Culkin, Succession (S1)
- Edgar Ramirez, The Assassination of Gianni Versace
- Ben Whishaw, A Very English Scandal
- Henry Winkler, Barry (S1)

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel nominations are for season 2!!! They received the DVDs copy of the season early than anyone.
About the nominations:
Best Drama Motion Picture made me laugh really hard!! Four terrible choices, one outstanding (IBSCT)! First Man, At Eternity's Gate, ROMA (inegilible for best picture 'cause is no English speaking film), Suspiria and Wildlife would be better choices!
Love the nominations for Comedy / Musical Movies!!
Sad for Burning, glad for Cold War not nominated!
Glad to not see any love for Widows! Black Panther and Blackkklasman should had only one nomination both (Washington and Kendrick Lamar song).
Sad for Barry Jenkins not nominated for directing and Heller's too!
TV nominations:
Sad for The Handmaid's Tale not get Best Drama. The same for The Haunting House of Hill.
Isn’t it season 2 of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel that they are nominating? It one best comedy series and actress last year, or am I going crazy?
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is for Season 2 (which was released yesterday on Amazon Studios). Both Rachel Brosnahan and the show won for Season 1...
No Laura Linney for Ozark? They really ramped up her role this year, and I don't get the love for Bateman and not her.
Collette missing is disappointing, but she'll still get a few more critics awards and keep her name afloat.
Snubbing Elliott is interesting. A little surprised about Hawke too.
Super sad for the bumps in the road for Toni and Hawke. I really feel like it is Hawke's year at the Oscars but who freaking knows at this point. At least the categories have some real nail biters! Gaga vs Close, Colman vs Blunt, Amy vs Regina x2! They should sit them at the same table.
Super happy for Kristin Bell! Sharp Objects! And that supporting actress TV is perfect. Hoping for Yvonne or Patty.
I just saw the nominations and I came here to say how excited I am for Rosamund's nomination. She is so not a Globesy choice (Like Roberts or even Davis) and the film didn't have any buzz. I hope it leads to a nomination. I think the biggest snubs are Hawke(especially for this line up) and Lanthimos for Director. I actually didn't think Cooper really deserves the director nomination (he certainly deserves the one for acting).
Here. I fixed it:
Best Motion Picture - Drama
“Annihilation”
"Black Panther"
“First Reformed”
"If Beale Street Could Talk"
“You Were Never Really Here”
Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
"BlackKklansman"
"Crazy Rich Asians"
"The Favourite"
"Mary Poppins Returns"
"A Star Is Born"
Suzanne - of course, I am a fool! Was flabbergasted that Grant's finest work of his career (which is saying something) seemed to be missing. Well deserved!
Have to disagree with your comment on the Original Score category, Nathaniel. The exclusion of BEALE STREET and Nicholas Britell's swooning romantic score is honestly the biggest upset for me with this morning's noms!
That said, I love the leading lady comedy list (yay Elsie Fisher and Charlize Theron - two of this year's best performances and films!), and I'm happy to see Lucas Hedges' beautifully interior work in BOY ERASED get some love.
The Globes and Oscars for they matter, need to start taking cues form the Emmys and put certain restrictions on "Supporting Categories"... Maybe a screen time or dialogue limit?
I'm so sick and tired of these Movie Stars taking spots away from true supporting players/character actors. If Emma Stone is supporting than I'm a flying elephant.
I wonder if Elsie Fisher can charm her way into Oscar's fifth Best Actress slot with Close/Gaga/Colman/Blunt. Eighth Grade has been strong thus far. It only missed Best Pic today.
happy to see so many people onboard that the Best Picture, Drama list is incredibly weak.
Not okay with the so-called category fraud, so I'll refrain from commenting on those nominations.
I like that the following got nominations:
Homecoming and that both Julia Roberts and Stephan James got nods as well; Rosamund Pike, Glenn Close, Shoplifters, Roma and Girl, Lucas Hedges, Willem Dafoe, Annie Lennox's "Requiem for a Private War" and Isle of Dogs.
I did not like the non-nominations of the following:
Toni Collette, Yorgos Lanthimos, both Shea Whigham and Marianne Jean-Baptiste's supporting turns in Homecoming; Ethan Hawke, Burning and Cold War, Joanna Kulig, Tilda Swinton, Alessandro Nivola, Rachels McAdams and Weisz for Disobedience, Jocelyn Pook's score for The Wife, Paul Schrader, and I know that no one liked Weiner's The Romanoffs but of the superb actresses who were there, Kathryn Hahn, Isabelle Huppert, Diane Lane and Marthe Keller should have been nominated.
Hey, I hate category fraud as much as the next person. But The Favourite is such a bizarre situation. Liv, Rachel and Em are all leads. There was never any way in hell they were all going to get into Best Actress, especially with the bountiful year we're having. So mathematically, this was the only way to recognize all three ladies' brilliant work. I'm OK with it.
Oh, and yaaassss for Gaga, Charlize and Constance Wu! But I'm really sad for Toni and Ryan. But this doesn't hurt her chances too much. Ryan's awards season is over. Sigh.
I'll echo Owl - Kathryn Hahn was amazing in The Romanoffs.
Are foreign language films not eligible for the Best Picture categories? Roma would seem like a shoo-in given its noms for director and screenplay. Hmm.
The split Best Picture categories are even more problematic this year than they normally are. We've got two musicals and a comedy competing in drama while three dramedies compete in comedy.
Elsie Fisher and Charlize Theron are nice surprises. Ethan Hawke and Toni Collette are disappointing snubs.
Hawke and FR are not a GG kind of thing,Hawke is well liked and has passion, don't worry folks.
Thrilled for Robert Redford, but Ethan Hawke's snub hurts. He is such an underappreciated actor and I was beggining to think this was his year. Praying the SAG nomination happens, so he can stay in the fight
Having Kristen Bell nominated for The Good Place but not Ted Danson is very annoying to me. Bell is charismatic and good in the role, but it is Danson who shines the most in the show. It's a masterpiece work and I want him to get more recognition
Jodie Comer should have been nominated alongside Sandra Oh for Killing Eve.
I'm sad no one is paying attention to Little Drummer Girl, which is LEAGUES better than The Night Manager (barring Olivia Colman's and Elizabeth Debicki's performances). Florence Pugh is amazing.
@Bruno, Agree about Laura Linney. Award bodies tend to focus on one person all the time for a certain movie/show (see Orange is the New Black and Uzo, when Danielle and Samira were RIGHT THERE!),
Just noticed also that Regina Hall didn't get a nom. Probably doesn't bode well for any slight chance she had at an Oscar nom.
Another thing on the Toni snub. I'm pretty sure the Globes are not into horror. Like I know they nominated Nicole for The Others and Get Out was huge last year BUTT... The Others was a bit more commercial (and PG 13) and Get Out was put into COMEDY last year. I feel like her chances are really up to whether or not she gets a SAG nom or not.
Odd... 3 spanish actors nominated, 2 in the same category... Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz and Daniel Bruhl.
Wait, what? You didn't know that Bruhl is spanish? He was born in Barcelona and his mother is spanish... I don't know if he has double nationality, but even if he cites himself as german normally, I guess he owns both passports.
Another unexpected spaniards (but second generation) includes myths like Rita Hayworth or Martin Sheen...
Just saw Crazy Rich Asians last night and while I'm content with Picture Comedy noms, I can't believe Constance Wu is a part of this conversation even the slightest. She's not good at all and actually quite dull as the lead.
Is the Old Man and the Gun a musical???
I'm surprised the Globes have never decided to go in on music as well, with awards for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. It would bring more pop stars to the show and allow them to precursor ALL the major awards (Oscars, Emmys and Grammys).
The Candice Bergen nom makes me so happy. :)
Haven't seen it yet, but I'm not sure if Vice will be as loved elsewhere, mostly because the Golden Globes are so obsessed with being 'first' to award late breaking contenders. Who knows if it has this much heat elsewhere?
Then again, I despised The Big Short and was so confused as it started to steal the season out of nowhere in 2015.
The Globes can be such starfuckers but if they're going to fuck stars, then let them be real stars like Charlize Theron doing A+ work in actually great movies like Tully. The Bohemian Rhapsody nonsense is as embarrassing as The Tourist.
Every year there's at least one performance that doesn't get a Globe or SAG nomination (the last time this wasn't the case was 2006), and part of me wonders if Hawke will fit the bill this year. It's usually someone in an acting centerpiece role who has been nominated previously so the Oscars are familiar, and he seems to fit that bill.
The Globes keep on globin'.
Haven't seen Mary Poppins but is Lin-Manuel Miranda a lead?
Talking about category fraud...uhhhh, someone going to tell me straight-faced that Eight Grade is a comedy? Or does the over-abundant sound(s) in the movie justify musical? That's crazy.
Also well done Farrelly over Burnham. I wouldn't have nominated him, but with respect to people who love Eight Grade, there's nothing superior about Burnham's direction. The use of music and sound outdoes Beautiful Boy and rather than a crutch really tries too hard.(sorry, think I just insulted after saying I don't mean to).
Lastly, I only just watched A Star Is Born (Tuesday), but I have a hard time understanding how people aren't insulted by last third of the film. It's a long film and yet there's a lack of story development. Sam Elliot is perfect but is severely missed most of the time. Eric Roth has been a great writer but the screenplay is lacking. And the film is is horribly manipulative by the end. Well directed, with some strong touches, but by the end Cooper is having to work too hard for the screenplay.
I liked it a good amount most of the way, tho I never saw it as a great film. Lady Gaga gave me some reason to believe and Cooper is excellent, but I was dreading the last few minutes, and for the wrong reasons.
Sorry if I sound like a dick.
Are we not allowed to criticize Crazy Rich Asians? I commented on it and it was deleted.
Disregard my last comment...I'm a dummy and didn't realize there was a second page of comments!
@Me
Do tell how Green Book and Eighth Grade are similar in direction. Do tell...
They're completely different. One is modern, one is not.
@TR
I was responding to Nathaniel's column. He asks if it's really necessary to nominate both McKay and Farrelly in lieu of of superior work. Burnham is mentioned amongst the list. I think I liked the film, but I think much of it was very amateurish.
Roma was submitted in the Foreign Language category, thus rendering it ineligible for Best Picture Drama.
I've seen a lot of people call the ending of A Star is Born "manipulative."
It's such a bizarre critique. First of all, ASIB has a clear and long-running formula. Second, depicting the tragedy of addiction is one of the things Cooper gets most correct..? If anything, he's more sensitive to that dimension than past directors/actors have been because he's in recovery.
Does "manipulative" mean "the ending made me sad and uncomfortable?" I guess that's life.
brookesboy the justification of ‘they won’t get nominated otherwise let’s stick them in supporting so they’ll be recognized ’ is the crux of why category fraud is so exhausting. Stone and Weisz are big stars who already have Oscars, do they really need the recognition over true supporting actors who would likely benefit more from a nomination ?
films speaks in NOT ENLISH LANGUAGE CANNOT BE NOMINATED FOR BEST DRAMA OR BEST COMEDY / MUSICAL MOTION PICTURES! IN THAT TWO CATEGORIES ONLY ENGLISH SPEAKS MOVIES!
u all should read the rules first!!
That is the reason why
ROMA
Amour
A Separation
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
La Vie in Rose
Letters from Iwo Jima
Talk to Her
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
didn't get the nominations for "best pictures"
I mean, the formula is irrelevant to me. Film is what the film is.
Addiction is ostensibly addiction. But the Jackson Maine character is hardly a victim of his addiction in any ostensible way. What happens down the stretch is not about addiction, at all. Yes, it's important. Yes, there is a hinting of things to come. But for a long movie there is so much that doesn't get developed. His life is spiraling from the beginning and his alcoholism is real, but he has a lot more control than that in the context of this story. The movie is messy.
And also, guys, this isn't a musical. Come on!
Rami, of course, that is always the reason for category fraud. What I'm saying is that it's hardly ever the case in a movie that you have three female leads, and they're all giving extraordinarily special performances. This is an extremely rare situation. Yes, it's unjust that true supporting actresses will not be recognized with a nomination. I would say that it also is unfair--and honestly absurd--that only Colman receives a nomination when they're all clearly on the same level. Just my opinion.
I'm starting to think Elsie could sneak into the 5th spot. It seems like there's 1-2 spots that are up in the air and the love for Eighth Grade has been really evident. It's kind of shocking that Elsie got in when Eighth Grade didn't get into anything else. I really hope she is able to get a nomination because she deserves it. Her performance is still my favorite of the year.
Come January we MUST nominate Viola Davis (an Oscar winner) for Widows
over any of these:
Glenn Close (never won)
Olivia Colman (never nominated)
Emily Blunt (never nominated)
Gaga (never nominated in acting)
Melissa McCarthy (never won)
Rosamund Pike (never won)
Carey Mulligan (never won)
just so we don't appear racist
*sings the SNL Asian-American doll theme*
"It's Vioooola, we nominated her this year,
we did it out of place of fear"
"Black Panther " for Best Drama?!
Overall, terrible film nominations in all categories. The Globes can't seem the tell the difference between Drama and Musical. Ridiculous.
I knew it was a long shot, but I was hoping that A Simple Favor would have snagged a nomination. It’s such a hysterical and strange movie with Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick managing to balance the the shifting tones so well.
@Yavor: that's so funny and true. I just watched Widows and kept wondering what the Oscar buzz surrounding Viola's performance was all about. She was good but not the best 5 I've seen so far.
Sad for Burning.
That movie has stuck with me for days now.
I don't mind saying the biggest surprise to me might be Michael B. Jordan not being nominated for Black Panther.
Random thoughts:
* Has a film based on comic book ever been nominated for Best Picture at the Globes? I'm happy about Black Panther. I thought it was excellent, and it's one of my favorite films of the year.
* I agree with previous posters that noted that it's weird when awards bodies single out only one performance in a film/show that clearly has more than one standout performance. Jodie Comer is AMAZING in Killing Eve.
* Bohemian Rhapsody for Best Drama is ... something. I wasn't crazy about the film but found it entertaining enough. This is pushing it big-time.
* Someone nominate D'Arcy Carden for *something* for playing Janet on The Good Place. She's that show's secret weapon!
* McCarthy needed this boost since she hasn't really been nominated for anything yet, while Richard Grant has been nominated for everything--which I find very odd. Loved them both in the film. Glad she got in.
* Missing the Globe nod seems like ... not a good omen for Julia Roberts, Saoirse Ronan, Viola Davis, and Carey Mulligan. They'd likely need some kind of critics award win for their odds to improve to land an Oscar nod, right?
* Love Toni Collette in Hereditary but the movie is ... not for the faint of heart. It's straight-up horror. I wasn't surprised to see her miss.
* I thought Constance Wu was kind of terrible in Crazy Rich Asians.
* Rooting for Donald Glover to win for Atlanta. This season was BRILLIANT. I don't use that word lightly or often.
* I really like Nicole Kidman and did not expect her to get double nominations ... but I thought she'd be nominated for Boy Erased and passed over for Destroyer. I think her chances are wobbly for an Oscar nod for either, but the Globe nod for Destroyer seemed essential to keep her in the race.
