Prime & Hulu: Wonder Wheel, I Tonya, Bull Durham, Etc.
Time to play Streaming Roulette. Each month, to survey new streaming titles on the various services, we freeze frame the films at random places and whatever comes up, that's what we share, no cheating! Today, we're looking at Prime and Hulu (which often have the same titles for some reason). Which of these will you be streaming this month for the first time or as a rewatch? Which would you most to see covered at TFE? Please do tell us in the comments.
Ready? Let's go...
I am NOT obsessed with it!
Burnt Offerings (1976) on Prime and Hulu
Karen Black alert! We were just talking about her. I think this movie is famous but I'm not sure why exactly. It's of the supernatural horror genre but horror is one of my weakest genres in terms of knowledge.
In tonight's performance the part of Juliet will be played by Virginia Delorean
Wonder Wheel (2017) on Prime
Kate Winslet and the Cinematography are both great in this movie. They risk going very saturated/theatrical but it works. If the rest of the movie were at their level we'd be talking.
Oh shit!
Universal Soldier (1992) on Prime and Hulu
There was a girl in this movie?!? All I remember is Lundgren and Van Damme ass. Fond memories.
STOP
The Wedding Plan (2016/2017) on Hulu and Prime
I really liked this Israeli romantic comedy. It's unique and the lead character is believably neurotic without seeming like she's scripted neurotic as women so often are in romantic comedies. From Rama Burshtein director of Fill the Void.
How do you like this odd little house? To me it's like heaven.
The Age of Innocence (1993) on Prime
Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day Lewis back in the day. It's so special that they share a birthday and made one of their best movies together, isn't it? Strangely I don't think we've ever talked about this movie at the length at TFE but we need to this year for its 25th. Perhaps a scene by scene miniseries?
I've been a cooperative specialist in Switzerland and Europe. Hostage retrieval is my area of expertise.
I Tonya (2017) on Hulu
Uff. You guys I feel so lonely in disliking this movie but it really doesn't work for me. The film wants to have it in too many different ways. It's especially problematic with this buffoon who I didn't buy for one second.
Just when I thought this place couldn't get any worse... an old basement!
Leprechaun (1993) on Prime
Omg it's Jennifer Aniston. LOL. Isn't Leonardo DiCaprio in this too? Wait I'm thinking of some other low budget horror movie aren't I? (I've never seen any of these Leprechaun movies but Prime is streaming all umpteen of them at the moment.
Okay final one...
-Crash must have called him a cocksucker.
-God he's such a romantic.
Bull Durham (1988) on Hulu
I genuinely think Susan Sarandon should've won the Oscar for this (and that's saying a lot since 1988 was a superb Best Actress lineup and she wasn't even nominated!). What a world. What a world. To me Annie Savoy is her all time best performance. Bull Durham was a huge hit in 1988 but was only nominated for Best Screenplay and, really, it should've been up for a slew of Oscars including Best Picture. The only Best Picture nominee that year that outmatches it is Dangerous Liaisons. In a grotesque turn of events it also wasn't even nominated at the Golden Globes for Best Comedy which is REALLY odd considering how successful it was that year with critics and audiences. But 1988 was one of those years that really had short attention span problems and was extremely December heavy with awardage.

Maybe the Leonardo Horror film you're thinking of is Critters 3? They used to scare the pants off me when I was a kid,
The scene with the chauffeur carrying the coffin in BURNT OFFERINGS is terrifying!
LEPRECHAUN is a blast!
We need a "Hit me with your Best Shot" for LEPRECHAUN! lol
I'm really not into Sport movies.... but I love Space Jam. *lol*
I know it won't be covered in any theme... So I'm happy to be at least able to mention it here in the comments, so thanks for that, Nat. 8)
The Age of Innocence. Can you talk about its costumes? The last time I saw it I was amazed by the way they help Scorsese to tell the story. Of course I was being trained by years of reading Tom & Lorenxo's Mad Style, but even with that predisposition in mind anyone can notice how awesome they are. I love the way Pfeiffer seems different, European, but also dragged down by her own clothes the more tragic her story turns out to be.
It was a real shame about Kate Winslet last year no one cited her for fear of backlash or offence and she handled it poorly but I though she was in the best form of her career.
Also, just watched Johnny Guitar on Hulu... what a treat!!!
I will check out 'The Wedding Plan' - sounds like fun. I will also rewatch 'Lady Bird' - obviously a complete delight - and may try to finish 'I, Tonya' - I rented it on redbox but could not get into it and chose to watch musical theatre performance videos instead.
Amen to the BULL DURHAM love. Though THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST was my favourite film of that year, hands down, for a whole slew of personal reasons. I still rewatch it most years.
I've not felt ready to watch WONDER WHEEL but I would like to see Kate Winslet's work in it. Maybe one day.
I found Burnt Offerings very unsettling, but I am susceptible to horror movies.
I saw it at a midnight double feature in Edinburgh, when I was working one summer in Scotland. I had to walk home afterwards, through a fog that looked green-yellow.
I kept thinking of Burke and Hare, the cadaver sellers who lived in old Edinburgh. I told myself that if I made it home, I would never do anything so stupid again.
there's a woman in universal soldier BECAUSE of all the damme/lundgren ass

Agreed about Kate Winslet. Career best work in Wonder Wheel.
Winslet is phenomenal in Wonder Wheel.
Yes, Bull Durham is Sarandon's best work ever along with Thelma & Louise and the little seen White Palace.
And speaking of The Age of Innocence. What a stunning masterpiece, on every level.
Winslet was exceptional in WW.
"Burnt Offerings" really creeped out 7 year old me back in the day.
I learned all about sex (and some baseball) from my future celebrity husband Kevin Costner. (And that film was VERY equality in terms of male and female nudity.)
I was stuck for the day and watched a double feature of "The Age of Innocence" and "Striking Distance". I;ll let you guess which one was better.
Yes Yes Yes to an Age of Innocence scene-by-scene miniseries!
Nathaniel, you SO are not alone in disliking I, Tonya. It was such an unpleasant and cynical (in a bad way) experience. I was also left feeling pretty much exactly the same way about Three Billboards, so I always associate those two movies with each other.
Janney is fine but extremely one-note here, and Robbie was good but honestly other than that courtroom scene I felt she had basically ZERO opportunities to show any acting range because the movie was so concerned with jumping around the timeline using very uninspired editing and short scenes. Seriously, the lead of the movie has basically only one "scene". Weird.
Whoa - 25th anniversary of Age of Innocence means its the 25th anniversary of Mike in Canada's devotion to film. I remember the Entertainment Weekly Fall Movie Preview with Michelle on the cover as a very vivid push in the right in the direction.
Yes to anything about Age of Innocence!
I really disliked I,Tonya and for some reason it was really jarring to read the positive reviews-- I mean, part of the fun about art/entertainment comes from the different responses to individual works, but I just found the film to be so unpleasant and not in a good/thought-provoking way.
I actually found Winslet's work waaayyy below the level of the Wonder Wheel screenplay. Both her and Timberlake delivered such uninspired takes on two incredibly meaty roles.
I still thought the film was quite good overall. Layered, intelligent, beautiful soul searching. Even on churn-em-out auto-pilot mode Allen's still such an incredible screenwriter.
Kate Winslet was a blast in Wonder Wheel.
What a masterful performance by Winslet in WW !
