Stage Door: The restless moving "Chains"

Mr & Mrs Charlie Wilson, the suddenly precarious couple at the heart of "Chains"

The work of British playwright Elizabeth Baker (1876-1962) has never been adapted to the cinema but not for lack of worthiness. Her most famous play, "Chains", is currently enjoying a revival Off Broadway. On the night we attended we learned, via the introduction, that the Mint's artistic director worried during its pandemic-forced delay that "Chains" might not resonate to modern audiences. The Mint forged ahead anyway only to realize that the fears were unfounded; class struggle and existential dilemmas are timeless topics...

Winona Ryder @ 50: "The Age of Innocence"

It didn't take long for Winona Ryder to capture the Academy's attention. In 1990, Mermaids marked the young actress' first brush with awards buzz, and, three years later, The Age of Innocence cashed in on that promise. For playing May Welland, the fiancée, then wife, of Daniel Day-Lewis' Newland Archer, Winona Ryder was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar and probably came quite close to winning. She won the Golden Globe and Anna Paquin's win at the Oscars for The Piano was considered a surprise at the time. And yet, reading reviews from the time and even modern considerations, it's clear that Ryder's performance isn't as universally beloved as her victories might imply. Indeed, it's divisive work…

Showbiz History: Room at the Top & The Age of Innocence

5 random things that happened on this day, January 22nd, in showbiz history

1954 The 11th Golden Globes are held. The Robe wins Best Drama but there wasn't a Best Comedy or Musical category for 1953 films. How strange... I mean Kiss Me Kate AND Roman Holiday AND Calamity Jane AND How to Marry a Millionaire AND The Band Wagon were all right there! But really it's true of almost every awards institution that the first decade plus is rife with inconsistencies. The Globe only really settled into the traditional field of nominees and categories we have now later in the 1950s.
